- Description
- Episode Description
- This episode examines with film excerpts, demonstrations, commentary and interviews, the advances being made in developing instruments astronomers can use above the earths atmosphere. Dr. Morris Shamos, moderator, talks with Dr. Martin Schwarzchild, professor of astronomy at Princeton University, about balloon astronomy one of the first methods of achieving this goal. Dr. Schwarzchild illustrates the balloon technique of Stratoscope II. Rocket astronomy another method that goes higher into the earths atmosphere is explored by Dr. Shamos and guest Dr. Herbert Friedman, superintendent of the atmosphere and astrophysics division of the US Naval Research Laboratory. Dr. Friedman describes how rocket astronomy developed; parachute techniques to recover the scientific payload; and some of the data this method has obtained. Dr. Leo Goldberg, professor of astronomy at Harvard University, discusses the importance of the orbiting solar observatory to observe the suns ultraviolet radiation. He demonstrates with a model satellite the types of equipment that might be used to gather valuable information for astronomers. Observatories in Space is presented by the American Astronomical Society and coordinated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. - Series Description
- Science and Engineering Television Journal is a series designed to keep scientists and engineers up to date on developments outside their own fields and also to help laymen, teachers, and students stay abreast of these specialties. Episodes on TV Journal feature noted scientists and engineers from universities, industry, and government, as well as coverage of laboratory research and experiments. The TV Journal covers a wide range of subjects of interest such as air pollution, supersonic air travel, city planning and design, man-made weather, behavioral sciences, space observatories, communications among animals, and computer control of traffic. The TV Journal episodes are coordinated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and prepared in cooperation with twenty scientific and engineering societies. The series is underwritten by the National Science Foundation and the Timken Roller Bearing Company. The series also has two permanent chairmen serving as alternate moderators Dr. Morris Shamos, chairman of the physics department at New York University; and Dr. A. George Schilllinger, director of the Unified Honors Program at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. John K. Mackenzie of AAAS is host and producer of TV Journal. E.G. Sherburne, Jr., is project director for AAAS. Science and Engineering Television Journal is produced in cooperation with WNDT/Channel 13, New York City. Bud Myers of WNDT is the series director. The 20 episodes that comprise the series were originally recorded on videotape. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
