Description
Episode Description
This episode presents Anna Sokolow?s ?Rooms,? a ballet for a generation without faith, a ballet about loneliness of the spirit and hunger of the soul ? one of the best-known dances in the American repertoire. ?Rooms,? created by Miss Sokolow in 1954, has been one of the most influential works in American dance, for, rather than providing pure entertainment, it accepts modern themes of life, hope, death, and despair as searchingly as any other American art form. With ?Rooms? for the first time, perhaps dance jazz was used ironically. No other modern choreographer has had more of a sense of the possibilities of jazz for her art than Anna Sokolow, and in ?Rooms? she uses a jazz by Kenyon Hopkins to heighten the tragic isolation of a man in the jazz age ? the theme of the work. ?Escape,? ?Going,? ?Desire,? ?Pain? ? the name of the individual dances in ?Rooms? indicate its concern with the psychological problems of contemporary life. They are performed by an outstanding group of dancers headed by Ze?eva Cohen, Jack Moore, and Jeff Duncan. USA: Dance - Anna Sokolow?s Rooms is a National Educational Television production. Episode Running Time: 28:56 (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
