Jefferson Airplane is the featured group in this one-hour color rock special taped during an all-night party at San Francisco?s Family Dog The program, which includes the Grateful Dead and Santana, conveys the sights, sounds, and moods of the San Francisco rock scene. The Airplane and Dead were among the first San Francisco groups: Santana, an Afro-Latin rock group, also had its origins in San Francisco. In describing this unique sound, Long Island Press critic Kathy Orloff wrote: ?While the Grateful Dead serve as a superb example of San Francisco music, each of the groups has its own particular style. The Dead have a more countrified flavor than Jefferson Airplane, which frequently tends towards more folk and blues sounds. The Airplane is another example of incredibly good musicianship coupled with a great sense of theater and the absurd.? The following is a ling-up of the numbers performed: Santana plays ?Incident in Nishapur? (Albert Guingunito) and ?Soul Sacrifice? (Santana). Grateful Dead play ?Too Hard to Handle.? Grateful Dead Medley: ?China Cats Sunflower? (Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia) and ?I Know You Rider? (Traditional: Arranged by Grateful Dead). Jefferson Airplane plays ?You and Me and Poonell? (Paul Kantner) and ?Eskimo Blue Day? (Grace Black and Paul Kantner). Jam session with Carlos Santana, Mike Carrabello, and Mike Shrieve of Santana, Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead; Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, and Spencer Dryden of Jefferson Airplane; Gary Duncan of Quicksilver Messenger Service; and Tim Davis of the Steve Miller band. ?San Francisco Rock at the Family Dog? is a KQED, San Francisco production for NET.
