- Concert of the Nations is a 75 minute music special featuring the Philharmonia Hungarica with conductor Mitiades Caridis and a rare collection of internationally known artists. The concert, sponsored by the International Music Council of U.N.E.S.C.O. was held on April 19, 1964, in Berlin. It includes the music of such well-known 19th century composers as Verdi, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Berlioz with soloists violinist Shmuel Askenasi, (Soprano Astrid Varnay,) dancers Erik Bruhn and Yvette Chauvire, and others. Philharmonia Hungarica Fausts Damnation This program is a production of the German Television Station Second Program, Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, Mainz. Notes on selected Personalities: Miltiades Caridis, guest conductor for this concert, is of Greek and German origin. He studied piano extensively in both Athens and in Germany. His career includes performances as guest conductor for numerous top European orchestras. From 1959-1962 he was Kappellmeister of the Kelner Opera and in 1960 was named chief musical director of the Philharmonia Hungarica. He has toured with the Philharmonia in Germany, England, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal and has appeared at numerous international music festivals. Giulietta Simionato a well-known Italian alto soprano. At the age of 23 she was awarded the Bel Canto Prize in Florence and subsequently toured the United States, Europe and Mexico. In 1947 she was the most widely acclaimed virtuoso during the La Scala opera season. Her repertory includes over 100 opera roles ranging from Rosina in The Barber of Seville, to Amneris in Aida. She has sung at leading opera houses throughout the world including the Metropolitan in New York. Soprano Astrid Varnay is an American singer born in Stockholm. Her early musical training came from her parents, both of whom were singers. She made a spectacular debut during the 1941 season at the Metropolitan Opera when she sand in the place of the famous Lotte Lehman. Miss Varnay has appeared annually at the Beirut Festival since 1951 and considers Beirut her second home. Geza Anda, the noted pianist, was born in Budapest where he began his musical studies at the Franz Liszt Academy. He made his concert debut at 19 in his native city and later studied with the noted composer Zoltan Kodaly. He is recognized as an outstanding performer of Mozart and has performed in all the major capitals of Europe and at many international music festivals. In 1961 and 1963 he won the Grand Prix du Disque for recordings of Chopin, Bartok, Mozart, and Beethoven. Shmuel Askkenasi is a young Israeli violinist who had attracted considerable attention in the music world by the age of eight. At fifteen he won the first prize in American-Israeli cultural exchange which brought him to this country where he studied under Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1962 he was widely acclaimed at the international Tchaikovsky Competition and has performed in concerts in the U.S.S.R., Israel, the United States, throughout Europe, and in Japan.
