- Episode Description
- Robinson Jeffers, one of the most controversial U.S. poets of the twentieth century, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, January 10, 1887 and died January 20, 1962, at Carmel, California. He explored the disillusionment characteristic of literature after World War I in his early works, and some of his later poems celebrate the splendor of the costal scenery near Carmel, California where he moved in 1916. This program provides an introduction to Robinson Jeffers, the man and his work. Since much of his work records his fascination with the Big Sur Coast near Carmel, the heart of the film is composed of recordings of Jeffers readings of his own poems accompanied by images of Tor House, Hawk Tower and the Big Sur Coast. The poems and accompanying statements employed are limited to those read by Jeffers at the Library of Congress, at Harvard University, and at City College in New York during his only reading tour in 1941. The program opens with a critical assessment of Jeffers achievements by one of his leading admirers, novelist Walter Van Tilburg Clark. Van Tilburg Clark, whose comments were made during an interview at his home in Reno, Nevada, is also seen in the closing segment of the program giving an interpretation of Jeffers philosophical attitude. Dame Judith Anderson plays a double role in the film. She performs in costume as Clytemnestra on the stairs of Hawk Tower in a passage from The Tower Beyond Tragedy. During an interview in Tor House she explains the effect of Jeffers upon her own career, recounts the story of his adaptation of Medea, and provides a vivid reminiscence of Jeffers and his wife. The Creative Person: Robinson Jeffers is a 1967 production of National Educational Television. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
