Description
Program Description
30 minute program, produced in 1970 by the American Radio Relay League, originally shot on film in color.
Program Description
The Hams Wide World tells the story of amateur radio today. Nearly half a million hams around the world maintain what is perhaps the most remarkable example of people to people communications man has ever known. Amateur radio recognizes no boundaries geographic, linguistic or ideological. It is the only hobby which exists by virtue of international treaties and national licensing of participants. And it has come a very long way since the first hams began to experiment more than half a century ago. In this film, Senator Barry Goldwater welcomes you to his amateur station to show you how phone patch conversations between servicemen overseas and their families at home are made possible by hams, and to tell you something of the history of amateur radio. You will witness too actual scenes of emergency communications provided by ham operators during a California forest fire and the Alaskan earthquake. You will watch amateurs operating in the field; other hams as they experiment with amateur TV and teletype and even amateur satellites designed and built by hams. Young hams enjoy Field Day, using emergency-powered equipment. These and many other fascinating aspects of amateur radio today are covered in this entertaining informative survey.
