- Hosted by eminent folklorist Oscar Brand, this is an episode from the four-part series American Odyssey, which documents the American heritage through folk music. Concerts staged by WITF, Hershey, Pennsylvania, at four historic locations Bar Harbor, Maine; Eckley, Pennsylvania; Cass, West Virginia; and Williamsburg, Virginia reflect the early American life-styles of a seaport, a coal-mining town, a railroad center, and a colonial community. Accordingly, performers and songs were selected to correspond with the theme of each site. At Bar Harbor, the Clancy Brothers, Tom Paxton, Dave Van Rink and others well-known for interpreting coal-mining sit of Eckley, Jean Ritchie, who grew up in a mining family, and other performers with the mines in their backgrounds including Billy Edd Wheeler and Merle Travis sing the sorrowful songs of the miners. On the Scenic Railroad at Cass, Leon Bibb, Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, and Mike Seeger transport viewers back to the iron horse era. And at Williamsburg, Theodore Bikel, Norman Kennedy, Jean Ritchie and the Beers Family depict colonial life through colonial song, played on early American instruments the psaltery, dulcimer and fiddle. In this episode about Americas seaports, Off to the Sea Again, Tom Paxton, the Clancey Brothers, Dave Van Rock, McKendree Spring, and Donal Leace perform at Bar Harbor. Host Oscar Brand discusses seacoast towns and their function in the development of the American industrial scene. The performances are as follows.
