- Episode Description
- Hearts are for valentines and something more -- they keep us alive. The heart starts beating when a person is born, and if he lives seventy years or longer it will beat some 2,500,000,000 times, and will pump fifteen million gallons of blood through his system. Using diagrams, charts, and models, Dr. Cherkasky explains clearly how the circulatory system works, what it does, and how the heart maintains the vital flow of blood. He then demonstrates various methods of examining the heart, including the taking of an electrocardiograph, and familiarizes the viewer with medical techniques that he may have experienced without understanding fully. Finally, in simple and reassuring terms, he describes the effects and the causes of the heart attack, and the steps that can be taken to guard against it and to lessen its effects. This program is particularly effective in transmitting important information without giving the viewer cause for unnecessary alarm. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
- Series Description
- Family Doctor takes NET audiences into the office of a typical family doctor and gives them, in easy-to-understand language, a comprehensive background on some of the most common illnesses. Normally, a person does not consult this doctor about such difficulties unless he is bothered by them; thus he may be ignorant of the nature and cause of certain illnesses and of what he might do to avoid them. This informal series is intended to remedy that, to give the layman the basic, common-sense information he needs to protect his health and the health of his family. There is no likelihood that it will protect his health and the health of his family. There is no likelihood that it will prompt the viewer to suspect unduly the presence of an illness in himself, or to try to cure himself with inappropriate home remedies. The tone of the series precludes that, and the point is made that these programs are no substitute for a visit to the family doctor. Dr. Martin Cherkasky, host for this series, has been director of the Montefiore Hospital in New York City since 1951. He also teaches courses in medicine for Columbia University and the State University of New York, and is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and the American Public Health Association. In addition he is a director of member of other medical and health associations, and is the author of many published articles on medical topics. A native of Philadelphia, Dr. Cherkasky received his MD degree from Temple University in 1936. He served for six years in the Army and during World War II spent twenty-seven months in the European theater. At the time he was separated from the service he held the rank of lieutenant colonel. The series of 6 half-hour episodes was originally recorded on videotape and has been produced under a grant from Mead Johnson Laboratories, Division of Mead Johnson & Company of Evansville, Indiana, manufacturer of nutritional and pharmaceutical products. It is being presented in collaboration with the American Academy of General Practice, the national organization for family physicians. The producing agency was the Troy-Beaumont Company of New York.
