- Episode Description
- The first story in the episode is The Legacy. Vaudrec, a good friend of Serbois and his wife Claire, dies. Serbois is hopeful that Vaudrec may have left them something in his will. Serbois and his wife go to see Lamaneur, Vaudrecs lawyer. When Lamaneur reads the will Serbois is upset because all of Vaudrecs possessions were left to Claire. Serbois is convinced that Claire has been the mistress of the dead man. When confronted by Serbois and his suspicions, Claire flatly denies them. Serbois is now torn between the hidden implications of the legacy and its value: one and a half million francs. Serbois avaricious desires lead him to discard his suspicions. He accepts the inheritance. Claire is shaken by her husbands actions and bursts into a rain of tears. The second story is Mademoiselle Pearl. Gaston dines on Twelfth Night with his old friends the Chantals. Also at the dinner are the Chantals two daughters and Mlle. Pearl. Gaston recalls that Mlle. Pearl, now near forty, has been in the Chantal household as long as he can remember. His curiosity leads him to ask Chantal about her. Chantal relates that Mlle. Pearl was found on the doorsteps on Twelfth Night forty years ago and taken in and brought up as one of the family. Gaston wonders why such a beautiful girl as Mlle. Pearl has never been married. He also remembers that some twenty years ago Mlle. Pearl and Chantal were madly in love with each other although neither of them realized it. The third story is Confession. The serious minded, conservative Captain Hector-Marie de Fontenne awaken one morning in a chorus girls bedroom. When his head clears he retraces his activities of the night before. He and the other officers has been on maneuvers, had gone to the theater and had taken the actresses to supper afterwards. He had had too much to drink. The memories upset him and he escapes the chorus girls room almost immediately. He races home to his wife, who has just spent two weeks in Paris, and makes a confession. Her only reaction to his embarrassing confession of unfaithfulness is uproarious laughter which she cannot control The fourth story is The Orderly. Colonel de Limousin, upon returning for his young wifes funeral finds a letter from her in his study. It is a confession of suicide. Isabelles letter explains that she had a lover and had been seen with him by her husbands orderly. The orderly offered to remain silent if he too could become Isabelles lover. Isabelle decided that she had no right to live and took her life. The Colonel sends for his orderly, Philippe, and at gunpoint has him tell who his wifes lover was. Upon hearing that it is a fellow officer, the Colonel shoots his orderly. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
