Description
Episode Description
This profile on the American author James Jones opens with him at the skeet range of Camp des Loges, outside Paris where the author now resides. His physical prowess is seen again at the swimming pool Pontoise, swimming and diving, as he does about twice a week when he is at work on a book. Jones is then seen shopping with his wife, Gloria, in the Paris Flea Market, buying a desk at a store for their children, and having a drink at a nearby bar. They later go window shopping on the Boulevard Haussman, which is decorated for Christmas. Jones discusses the themes of his recent books, Go to the Windowmaker during an interview in his study. He is seen surrounded by the mementoes of his life including the Congressional Medal of Honor, Aqualungs, six pairs of cowboy boots, knives, guns, and a framed fake million-dollar check celebrating his new contract with Dell publishing Company for his next three unwritten books (one of which is Windowmaker). He talks of his past life, parents, the writing of From Here to Eternity, and the nature of courage and mans search for physical danger. A poker game follows a dinner party at the Jones apartment on the fashionable Ile St. Louis, with painter Don Fink, director Nicholas Ray, and writer Irving Shaw. At his local brasserie Jones talks to the American mountaineer, Gary Hemmings, about their conflicting attitudes on the issues of courage, cowardice, and the search for physical danger. Over a whisky at the 17th-century pulpit used by Jones as a bar in his drawing room, he discusses problems of sexual morality, faithfulness, and frankness in literature, and the liberating influence of From Here to Eternity. Later, Jones and his wife prepare to go out to dinner with some 20 guests at the apartment of the authors agent. At this party a quarrel arises on Americas involvement in Vietnam, which draws forth some of Jones strongest reactions.
