- Program Description
- In this hour long special, John Butler, a leading choreographers in many areas of dance, and four major composers -- Robert Starer, Benjamin Lees, Gunther Schuller and Eric Siday -- examine in music and dance terms the five senses. Mr. Butler and the composers he in turn selected have been commissioned through the resources of the Lincoln Center Fund, in the latest collaboration between NET and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Five ballets, one for each sense, make up the hour. Ben Shahn drawings are used in the introduction and transitional passages of the program. The ballets, in order are: Taste of Sorrow: Original jazz score by Gunther Schuller. An abstract suggestion of meetings, partings, and reconciliations. The resolution dramatizes the most bitter taste of all the taste of the human tear. The performers: Carmen deLavallade, Ross Parkes, Buzz Miller and Fern MacLarnon Chorus: Karen Kristen, Nira Paaz, Micheline Wilkinson, Wesley Fata, Chester Wolenski, and Richard Zelens (Gunther Schuller conducted the recording of his score, in which the musicians include jazz great Urbie Green, trombone; Clark Terry, trumpet; and John Handy, saxophone.) Scent of Flight: Original electronic score by Eric Siday. Man has always tried to expand his consciousness. Here John Butler and the dancers take a wry view of a trip. The performer: Sondra Lee, Wesley Fata, Buzz Miller Touch of Loss: Original score by Robert Starer, conducted by Herbert Grossman. John Butlers work is often rooted in fine arts or literature. Here Francois Villons poem The Old Ladys Lament for Her Youth inspires a ballet. As the Old Lady, Mildred Dunnock performs excerpts from translation of the work by the poet Robert Lovell. The performers: Mildred Dunnock, Carmen de Lavallade, Ross Parkes Sound of Fear: The music is a blues suite adapted by singer Leon Bibb from authentic folk materials. One of the pieces, a prison work song, is inspiration for this ballet of a prisoners escape. The performers: Buzz Miller, Carmen de Lavallade, Ross Parkes Leons Bibb voice is heard as leading vocalist. Sight of Beginning: Original score by Benjamin Lees, conducted by Herbert Grossman. A ballet inspired by the moment when King David first sighted Bathsheba. The performers: Bathsheba: Brunilda Ruiz; David: Lawrence Rhodes; Handmaiden: Fern MacLarnon. Soldiers: Wesley Fata, Buzz Miller, Ross Parkes, Chester Wolenski. Lincoln Center Stage 5: Five Ballets of the Five Senses is a National Educational Television production. Produced through the facilities of WGBH, Boston, and Videotape Center, NY. Producer: Jac Venza. Director; Dave Geisel. Associate producer: Virginia Kassel. Designed by Tom John. Costumes: Frank Thompson. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
