Description
Episode Description
A marriage based solely on pity is built on disastrously insecure foundations, as commercial artist Bernard Jeantet discovers to his cost. He returns one day to his quiet Paris apartment to find that his wife, Jeanne, is missing. Neither the concierge nor the elderly dressmaker, Mile. Couvert, who lives upstairs with the little boy Pierre, can help him. He decides to report the disappearance to Inspector Gordes, who knows all about Jeanne, a former prostitute. When Jeanne is found dead in a hotel room and a verdict of suicide is brought in, Jeanet begins to discover how far self-delusion has taken him. Hankering for her old life, bored and unable to manage on Jeantet's meagre allowance, Jeanne had become the mistress of a rich industrialist, Beaudoin, who had booked the hotel room for her where they met once a week. Beaudoin has only contempt for Jeantet, calling him a hypocrite who had refused to acknowledge the past. When Jeantet insists on their meeting, the rich man tells him that Jeanne had been slowly suffocated by her husband's overwhelming kindness. Unwilling to hurt him, she had refused Beaudoin's pleas to break away. Then Jeantet discovers what Jeanne had been afraid to tell him: that the little boy Pierre was her own son. In a final attempt to make amends, Jeantet decides to bring the boy up as his own. The Paris sequences of "The Widower" were filmed on location in that city.
