Description
Episode Description
Gilbert A. Harrison, editor-in-chief of The New Republic magazine is interviewed by host Donald Fouser. The 52-year-old journalist has been publisher of The New Republic since 1951 and editor-in-chief since 1953. During his tenure the weeklys circulation has risen to 97,000. Founded in 1914 by such distinguished commentators as Walter Lippmann and Herbert Groly, The New Republic has evolved into one of the most influential voices of the democratic left. Mr. Lippmann, at the time of the journals 50th anniversary, stated the paper was meant to be what it now is -- the organ of no party, of no faction, of no sect, and of no cause, concerned not with liberalism and progressivism and conservatism, as ideologies, but with all of them in the perspective of the tradition of civility in our Western society. On the same occasion Mr. Harrison said, in describing the magazines philosophy, As a journal of opinion, and at a time when triviality and self-deception are so often paraded as solemn wisdom, we must be skeptical of men and especially, public men, because it is not always the cream that rises to the top. But this journal is not skeptical of the worth or potentialities of man .... In commenting on public affairs each week, we try to distinguish between what is being done and what could be done and what should be done. The Dissenters: Gilbert A. Harrison was produced for National Educational Television by its Boston affiliate, WGBH-TV. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
