- The first story in this episode is A New Year Gift. Jacques, a middle-aged, pompous aristocrat is alone in his apartment on New Years Eve. He gets a surprise visit form Irene, a married woman who he adores. She has come to tell him that she quarreled violently with her husband. She also proposes that she and Jacques run away together. Jacques retains his pride and explains that they will suffer complete social ostracism should they take her proposed step. Irene insists, Jacques finally agrees and they begin to organize their flight. Irene then reveals that the story of her quarrel with her husband was untrue. She has no intentions of running away from her husband at all. Then she thinks Jacques for her New Years gift his heart, and leaves him flabbergasted in the confines of his lonely apartment. The second story is Monsieur Parent. Monsieur Parent is a weak-willed bourgeois who is married to an evil tempered woman. They have a baby, Georges, whom M. Parent loves dearly. The old family servant tells Parent that his good friend Limousin and his wife are having an affair. Parent, furiously dismisses the servant. Parents suspicious grow and he spies on them only to discover that he servant was right. He becomes hysterical and throws them out of the house. Mme. Parent tells Parent that Georges is now his son and insists on taking him with her. Now Paren is left alone wondering whether or not Henriette has spoken the truth. Twenty years later Parent is launching alone at Saint-Germain. Henriette, Limousin, and Georges appear at the next table. His twenty years of bitterness lead him to cause a scene in the restaurant. He demands to know once and for all whose son Georges really is. The trio remain silent and horrified. They dont know the answer and their reputation has been publicly damaged. Parent leaves with his twenty-year-old question still ringing in his ears, evidently to spend the rest of his life trying to forget. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)

- The short stories of Guy de Maupassant, considered the greatest master of the short story by some, have been adapted for television by Granada Television of London. Each of the thirteen episodes in the series consists of several short stories grouped together under a central theme. Among the themes are war, women and money, marriage, and husbands and wives. Each of the stories has a different cast. The series attempts to bring out the range in characterizations used by de Maupassant and to show his versatility in dealing with a wide variety of diverse subjects and situations. The subjects depicted in the de Maupassant stories paint a vivid picture of life in the early days of Frances Third Republic. The Stories of Guy de Maupassant was produced by Granada Television of London. These episodes were originally recorded on film. Designed to accompany the episodes, which are various odd-lengths, is a set of 13 musical segments, which were originally shot on videotape. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
