Series Description
Through the study of picturesque word origins and changes in meanings, this series heightens interest in the exact meaning and use of English words. Its aims are to encourage use of the dictionary and to show how a knowledge of word origins can often help with spelling, pronunciation, and usage. Another purpose of the series is to make the viewer aware that language is ever-changing, that the meaning of words is not fixed for all time. Professor Ed Adams has chosen examples that often reveal the connection between word meanings and man's beliefs and attitudes of former times. This series of 15 fifteen-minute episodes was originally recorded on kinescope. Edwin H. Adams is associate professor of communications at the University of Washington. He joined the faculty of the University in 1939, as an associate in English, but his interests and experience in broadcasting led to his selection as radio program director and executive officer of the Department of Radio Education, which was later incorporated in the School of Communications. Since 1942 he has conducted a radio book review series, "Reading for Fun," heard weekly over a dozen stations in the Pacific Northwest. His tele-course on Northwest Books, presented over the Seattle commercial station KING-TV, won honorable mention at the Ohio State Institute for Education by Radio and Television in 1954. Professor Adams' interest in words dates back to his undergraduate days, and his first radio series for the University, called "The Fun of Words," which covered subject matter similar to that of the "Watch Your Language" series. Mr. Adams is a regional director of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
