- Episode Description
- An entire community has been disrupted by a spate of poison-pen letters that has driven several people to madness or suicide. No one knows who has been writing the letters, but they have nicknamed the anonymous person The Typewriter. Several people make false confessions from a variety of motives -- to gain attention, to protect a suspected lover, or for more complicated reasons. The final confession is a true one. Solange, a wealthy widow, feels that social order is maintained only because of the fear of blackmail -- that only secrecy and the fear of condemnation if that secrecy is broken keeps the world from descending into anarchic chaos. Despising this thin shell of pseudo-order, she has written letters in an effort to break through to more essential values. When she is forced to reveal her identity as The Typewriter, she too commits suicide. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
