- Description
- Episode Description
- This program opens at Glenn Goulds cottage retreat near Lake Simcoe in Ontario, Canada. Here he plays his own 60-year-old piano, usually heard only by his collie or by neighbors enroute to the store. During his impromptu performance Mr. Gould revels in his brief freedom from public performance; he kicks off his loafers and swings into a Bach fugue with collar a flare and shirt-tail flying. Satiated with music, he shambles through the wood or chats with fellow musician Franz Kraemer, an appreciative listener. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)

- Series Description
- Glenn Gould is a candid portrait of the Canadian pianist famous throughout the world for his interpretations of Bach. Born in Toronto, Canada, 29 years ago, Gould began to play the piano at the age of three. He studied music with his mother, an amateur pianist, until he was ten. From 1943 to 1952 he attended the Toronto Royal Conservatory of music where he studied piano with the well-known Toronto teacher, Alberto Guerrero. At the age of twelve, he became the youngest musician to receive the degree of Associate at the Conservatory. In addition to piano, Gould studied the organ. When he was only fourteen he appeared at Eaton Auditorium in the Casavant Series, which each year brings to Toronto five of the worlds finest organists. During the same year, Gould, in his first appearance with a professional orchestra played Beethovens Fourth Piano Concerto with the Toronto Symphony. Since that time he has appeared with all of Canadas major orchestras, with the New York philharmonic, and with all of the leading orchestras in Europe. The first North American pianist to be invited by the government of the Soviet Union to perform in that country, Gould gave concerts in Moscow and Leningrad in the spring of 1957. His performance of the Goldberg Variations in Moscows Tchaikovsky hall prompted one critic to conclude that the pianist must be more than 200 years old and an ex-pupil of Bach himself. On his way back to this country, Gould played the Beethoven Third Piano Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan and also performed at the Vienna Music Festival. Glenn Gould: a production of the National Film Board of Canada. The program was produced in 1960. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
