- Description
- Episode Description
- Two of the poets of what has frequently been referred to as the New York Poets are Kenneth Koch and John Ashbery. Both went to Harvard and came to New York in the early 1950s. Koch is currently on a Guggenheim fellowship, on leave from his teaching post at Columbia University. Ashbery recently returned from Paris, where he had been living for a decade, and is currently executive editor of Art News magazine. Both poets admit to a deep influence from French poetry. Their work is characterized by wit and linguistic originality. Both have been associated with the theater and with contemporary painting. Their style is at the opposite pole from that of Allan Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Koch reads two short poems To You and Spring, a short play The Revolt of the Giant Animals, and his long poem The Circus. Ashbery reads two poems from his recent book Rivers and Mountains (These Lacustrine Cities and Blessing in Disguise), his early poem Popular Songs, and a recent poem Definition of Blue. USA: Poetry - Kenneth Koch and John Ashbery is a production of National Educational Television and KQED, San Francisco.
