Description
Episode Description
This month the NET series examines men of power who have affected the world in which we live focuses on Hindu nationalist leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Millions of Indians worshipped Gandhi as their savor but the British government feared the little man in a dhoti and tin spectacles because in passive resistance he had found a weapon more powerful than military strength. MEN OF OUR TIME: GANDHI documents the career of the revered Indian holy man from his beginnings as an attorney, through his fight for Indian rights in South Africa, his open clashes with the British government on the issue of Indian independence, his successful application of the principles of nonviolence, to his violent death by a political fanatic. As a special feature of the program, noted American journalist James Sheean is interviewed by Saville Davis, NET series host and The Christian Science Monitor Washington bureau chief. Author of Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru: Ten Years of Power, Mr. Sheean became acquainted with the Hindu leader while on assignment as a foreign correspondent in India. He comments on the kind of man Gandhi was, the almost mystical power he wielded over the Indian people, his struggle against Great Britain for Indian independence, and the implications of Gandhis belief in a united India on the current hostilities between India and Pakistan. MEN OF OUR TIME: GANDHI: a 1965 National Educational Television presentation, adapted by National Educational Television from a production of Granada Television of England. Series Description
This series of six documentaries deal with some of the men of power who for better or worse were influential in shaping the world around us. Each episode is more in the form of a political essay than a chronological history, and each will attempt to put into perspective the mans rise of power, his use or misuse of the power at his disposal, and the manner in which his actions still affect our lives. Along with the documentary film portion, many of the films will include the reminiscences of people who were close to either the subject or his work. Seville Davis, noted correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor, is the host for the series. MEN OF OUR TIME was adapted for NET by William Weston from a production by Granada TV of England. The 6 hour-long episodes that comprise the series were originally recorded on videotape. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
