- On June 20, 1969, one of the nations newest musical events was opened, the Mississippi River Festival. With the campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville as its summer home, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, joined by many illustrious guest artists, began a series of 18 weekend concerts. The Festival, utilizing the sloping lawn area of natural amphitheater on the Southern Illinois University campus, provides reserved seating for 1,855 persons under a tent, as well as informal seating for an additional 10,000 and has set aside areas for preconcert picnics. In addition, a line-up of top pop, rock, and folk artists began a series of weekday programs at the Festival. NET presents the July 7 concert by folksingers Arlo Guthrie, and Joni Mitchell. The episode includes an interview with them by Larry Gilbert. Arlo Guthrie accompanies himself on six or twelve string guitar, and piano. At the Mississippi River Festival concert he was backed by his new sidemen: John Pilla, guitar: Bob Arkin, bass; and Paul Motiam, drums. From Arlo Guthries performance, the NET episode includes a selection from the following songs, most of them written by Arlo Guthrie: 1. Motor Cycle, 2. Coming Into Los Angeles, 3. If You Would Just Drop By, 4. Old Mary, Dont You Weep No More, 5. Black Mountain Rag, 6. Mother, the Queen of My Heart, 7. Wheel of Fortune, 8. Say it Loud Again. 9. Amazing Grace. Joni Mitchell accompanies herself on guitar and piano. The NET episode includes a selections from the following songs performed by Joni Mitchell at the Mississippi River Festival. Most of them are written by Joni Mitchell. 1. Chelsea Morning, 2. Cactus Tree, 3. Night in the City, 4. Marcie, 5. Nathan La Franeer, 6. The Gallery, 7. Two Houses, 8. Flayed Real Good for Thee, 9. Willie. 10. Get Together, 11. Fiddlin and Drummin 12. Both Sides Now, 13. Michael from the Mountain, 14. I Think I Understand.
