Description
Episode Description
Norman Thomas, called "The conscience of the American people" by some, and, less vehemently, "respectable rebel" by others, is perhaps best known as the man who has six times run for president, and six times been defeated. Born in 1884, Mr. Thomas was educated at Princeton and later at the Union Theological Seminary. In 1911 he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister and remained in the ministry for 20 years. He chose to work in underprivileged areas of New York, and it was the desire to relive the misery he found among his parishioners that prompted him to become a Socialist in 1918. Interviewed by James Day, general manager of station KQED, San Francisco, Norman Thomas discusses his path to Socialism, a socialism born out of good fortune and obligation rather than frustration. On the Socialist ticket he has run for a number of high offices, but always unsuccessfully. Often a critic of the U.S.S.R., Mr. Thomas voices his feelings on Communism. He discusses other major issues in which he is actively involved, a peaceful society, and a better standard of civil liberties. A dedicated Socialist all his life and a diligent worker to improve the lot of his fellow man, Norman Thomas expresses to Mr. Day the wish that he might have had more time for music and sport, to be more a "Universal Man." "Norman Thomas" produced in San Francisco by KQED. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
