- Program Description
- This is a comic opera (opera buffa) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The 18-year-old Mozart received with youthful exuberance the commission from the Elector of Bavana to composer LA FINTA GIARDINIERA. The story had been set to music earlier by the composer Anfossi. Mozart saw this as an opportunity to poke gentle fun at the stuffy and outmoded conventions of opera buffa and he seized on it with delight. The opera was completed in less than five months and was first performed at court in January 1774. The plot is extremely involved and concerns a count who has stabbed his wife. He thinks she is dead, but in reality she is alive and working as a gardener on the estate of an Italian magistrate. The magistrate is trying to marry his niece to the count, but she is in love with a poet. And the two servants, a male and female, also are involved in the frenzy. The plot has been revised and translated by Sarah Caldwell and the new dialogues in English have been prepared by Eugene Haun. Members of the Boston University School appear in the opera and participate on the production and technical staffs. Members of the Boston University Symphony Orchestra provide the music for the performance. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
