Description
Episode Description
An exclusive interview with the President of the Republic of South Vietnam videotaped on Saturday, May 28, in Saigon. Moderators are: Clifton Daniel, associate editor of The New York Times and moderator of the bi-weekly program, and Terence Smith, chief of the Times Saigon Bureau. Following are some of the statements made by President Thieu: Underscoring his countrys determination to keep South Vietnam forces in Cambodia, President Thieu declared, We have no fixed deadline (on withdrawal). And I think as long as we continue to discover the caches around the border, we have to clean up. President Thieu also said that if his troops remained in Cambodia after June 30, he would need some combat support or logistical support by US forces. On the larger question of US ground combat forces still fighting in South Vietnam next year: It is feasible that all land operations will be done only by South Vietnamese troops by 1971. He stressed, however, the need for continued US support forces in the areas of air support, artillery, and engineers. At the same time, he conceded that you still need American ground troops to protect your own logistical bases as long as those bases remain in South Vietnam. Of the current campaign in Cambodia: We must consider that what we are doing is a common war. What Vietnamese are doing and what Americans are doing in fighting the war here is for the safety of both American and Vietnamese troops. The purpose of the operation in Cambodia territory is very clear. To provide safety to American and Vietnamese troops and to the Vietnamese people. Secondly, to permit the Vietnamization to be carried out correctly from now to next year as previously planned. On other topics discussed during the interview, President Thieu foresaw the possibility of some kind of new Indochinese federation, or at the least, a cooperative venture amongst South Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. He dismissed the massacre of Vietnamese in Cambodia as Communist-inspired and calls it a so-called massacre. To him it reflects more than excesses of the first days of fighting, but he maintained that now there is a better understanding between Cambodians and his own people. NEWS IN PERSPECTIVE is a production of National Educational Television. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
This series of hour-long episodes goes behind the headlines of the past month and looks briefly ahead - at the places, people, and events that are likely to make headlines in the coming weeks. A distinguished team from The New York Times summarizes and interprets the major news developments throughout the world and provides a back ground for better understanding of probable future events. Each NEWS IN PERSPECTIVE episode is designed particularly to clarify the complexities of current history. Lester Markel is the editor-moderator of episodes 1 - 89. Clifton Daniel took over for Mr. Markel for the remainder of the series. Max Frankel, diplomatic correspondent for The Times in Washington, DC, and Tom Wicker, White House political correspondent for The Times, are guests on many episodes. Starting with episode 38, the switched switched from monthly to bi-monthly. One of the month's episodes would follow the standard format, with a host and usually Frankel and Wicker commenting on current events. The other episode would be focused on a particular topic and feature subject experts in addition to Times reporters. Throughout each episode maps, photographs, cartoons and slides are used to illustrate the topics under discussion. NEWS IN PERSPECTIVE is a production of National Educational Television, in cooperation with The New York Times. Episodes were frequently produced through the facilities of WNDT, New York. The facilities at WETA, in Washington DC, were used at times, in addition to other international locations. This series was originally recorded on videotape, sometimes in black and white and sometimes in color.
