- Description
- Episode Description
- A belief in the divinity of Nature is a new force and it is explored in this 18th century episode. The program was filmed in Switzerland where Rousseau lived and in England where the new philosophy originated. Locations include Tintern Abbey and Grasmere, both connected with Wordsworth. The worship of nature replaced Christianity as the chief creative force in Western Civilization. Painters shown are Constable, J.M.W. Turner, and Monet as they try to register the perception of their sense in paint. The sequences are complemented by music of the great romantic composers. Clark acclaims Turner as a genius of the first ranks whose works are the supreme exponent of Nature. The idea of the natural goodness of man is such a happy and self-serving thought that most people still cherish it today. Civilisation is an NET presentation, produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Presentation of this program in the United States has been made possible by a grant from the Xerox Corporation.
