- Episode Description
- Patrick Magee, Ian Richardson, Glenda Jackson, and the Royal Shakespeare Company perform Peter Weiss, Marat/Sade in the United Artists film directed by Peter Brook. The motion picture is adapted from the successful and highly acclaimed 1965 play which also starred the Royal Shakespeare Company and was directed by Brook. Marat/Sade, the full title of which is The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Marquis de Sade, is an unconventional work of extraordinary impact. It is a play within a play, set in the Asylum of Charenton, and actual French institution at which inmates sometimes gave theatrical performances as a type of therapy during the early 1800s. The Marquis de Sade, who was confined to that asylum for the last 11 years of his life, directed those performances. In Marat/Sade Patrick Magee portrays de Sade, who has been asked to direct his fellow inmates in a dramatization of the murder of Jean-Paul Marat (Ian Richardson), a leader of the French Revolution who was stabbed to death by a young girl of the gentry, Charlotte Corday (Glenda Jackson). As the play progresses, a fierce philosophical battle develops (outside the basic framework of the inmates performance) as de Sades fatalism and concern for self-gratification clash with Marats quest for social reform through violent revolution. The warden of the institution, observing with his wife and daughters, objects to these clashes but nevertheless seems oblivious to the ominous undercurrent that pervades the performance. He lets the play continue until finally the inmates rage completely out of control. Giving the work added force are an array of compelling visual and musical effects which help reinforce the oppressive atmosphere of the asylum. The music is by Richard Peaslee. This is the second of several program this season in which NET Playhouse will present great theatre companies from around the world.
