Description
Episode Description
Among the most distinguished names in American letters, both Richard Wilbur and Robert Lowell have been awarded Pulitzer Prizes, both tend to employ traditional forms with the greatest technical mastery, and both are scholars and teachers as well as poets. Richard Wilbur was filmed at his home in Portland, Connecticut, close to Wesleyan University where he is a professor of English. Regarded as a master of poetic form, he comments in the film, Im not, of course, interested in making little dollies. Im interested in whats being said, though by formal means. Sometimes it takes me three or five years to finish off a poem. Mr. Wilbur also reads his poems On the Marginal Way, Love Calls to Us to the Things of this World, and Advice to a Prophet. Robert Lowell is filmed in his New York studio, where he has lived since the mid-1950s. Scion of a distinguished New England family, he is regarded by many critics as the most important living American poet. He reads his poems about Maine Water, Soft Wood, The Flaw, and Fall 1961 and Viva La Muerte, about New York. USA: Poetry - Richard Wilbur and Robert Lowell is a production of National Educational Television and KQED, San Francisco.
