- Description
- The Women's Council of the Community Service Society (CSS) of New York celebrates their work on behalf of the elderly citizens of New York, in the midst of their fall campaign "A New Friends Round-Up." Blanchette Ferry Hooker Rockefeller (wife of John D. Rockefeller III) gives out surprise awards to Welfare Commissioner Henry L. McCarthy, and the husband and wife Broadway team Florence Eldridge and Frederick March, who acted in radio shows based on CSS-created programs. Speakers include actress Josephine Hall. Award winners Commissioner McCarthy, Eldridge, and Marsh, as well as advocate for the elderly, founder of the National Council on the Aging, and President Elect of the Gerontological Society (among other accolades), Ollie Randall and CBS' Dwight Cooke. Randall's speech asks "Too Old for What?", pondering on the place of older generations in American society. Cooke speaks about 'Life, Liberty, and Service." He wonders if we don't properly consider what older people are capable of and what roles they should take. There are frequent gaps in the audio on the original recording.
