Moderator Chester Williams explains to the listeners that this episode is the first in a series produced by the Community Council of New York. Williams says the show is a "program about people, people in trouble and people in need of help. It's the story of social services in New York City where 1 and a half billion dollars is spent on social services per year. Williams explains that this program tells "the vital story of the helping professions in the city." This episode primarily discusses a Community Council publication "Annual Prices Survey," published by the community council. Guests include Mrs. Lousie Addis, a home economics consultant, Louis L. Levine, the Director of Community Services, AFL-CIO, and Peggy Ann Mason, Chief of the Budget Standard Service. The guests discuss food, clothing, and housing needs in the average modest family budget.
