Welcome to Crimson and Gold Connection, keeping you connected with the people and current events at Pittsburgh State University. This week on the Crimson and Gold Connection, I'm joined by Learning Outreach Librarian at the Leonard H. Axe Library and Assistant Professor at Pittsburgh State University or Haleoan. Thanks for joining me this week on the Crimson and Gold Connection. Thank you very much, pleasure to be here. There's a lot going on at the Axe Library here at Pittsburgh State University, more than just studying and checking out books. Taking place Thursday November 1st, the Axe is holding their 35th annual University Authors Reception. It's taking place on the first floor and starts at 3 p.m. This event is open to both the Pitt State community and to the community at large. Or hey, I know that we have a lot of talented faculty and staff here at Pittsburgh State University. I talked to a lot of them on the Crimson and Gold Connection, but could you name a few of our Pitt State author professors or faculty? And what kind of books are they
writing? Well, yeah, and I think as you mentioned before, I think this for us is one of our longest running traditions. We tend to have a couple of different displays that honor the different types of works, everything from book articles, publications, things in conference proceedings to then full book authors. This year, it's really exciting for us. It's one of the first years that we're including open education resources. So we have a large number of authors. We're honoring 10 different book authors and over 60 to 70 pieces published University wide by both staff and faculty. Some of the ranges of our authorship come from professors like Professor Arruda, Professor Franklin, Grant Moss, Professor Sepernick, Casey Hermenson and the list kind of goes on. And the range of books is just as equally diverse. I mean, we have some titles there dealing with young adult books to heavy equipment and construction equipment.
Two of the names I've heard right there, Dr. Moss, to Graham Moss, and Casey Hermenson might have them here on the Crimson and Gold connection. And if you've heard those segments or know them professionally, those, I don't know if you could find two different types of, two different types of disciplines than them. Peculiar things about this year, his authorship is he has both print and open education resources. And we really do want to highlight how much our professors and our community are doing both in print and also in digital publications. Yeah, Grant Moss, if you talk to him, he's also the K.A.E. president. That's where I know him from here at Pittsburgh State University. He is talking about, and just not only an impassioned professor here at Pittsburgh State, he must be an impassioned writer. That's how he comes across. So that's the thing I remember speaking to you about this event the last year. There's so much more than just going to class and speaking with students. The thing about working at a university setting is that these are professionals well known in their field. Correct, correct. I think one of the reasons we're so passionate about this event every year is that it has an opportunity for us not only see what our colleagues across the
different buildings and different areas of campus are doing, but also for our students and community to see what these professionals are adding to their fields. Also, I think one of the things that we try and make sure is that we will have the event next week, but we also try and make sure that there are opportunities for people to come in. So starting this week, most of our book and author article displays are up. So anybody coming into the library can see a large wall of all the publications as well as some cases that have the books that have been published. And that stays up for a couple of weeks. So we try and make sure that no matter what time you come in, you're able to come see what are the works that are being produced on campus by colleagues across campus. Thursday, November 1st, kind of marks the date of importance that this is going to happen. But if you don't have that time on Thursday, November 1st, you can come in and see what Pittsburgh State faculty and professors have produced in the last year. Correct, correct.
I'm speaking with Jorge Leone, learning outreach librarian at the Leonard H. Axe Library and assistant professor here at Pittsburgh State University about the author's reception taking place on Thursday, November 1st. And also the library, along with the art department, you guys have invited some special speakers coming to Pittsburgh State on Monday, November 12th and Tuesday, the 13th. All these events are also, they're open to the public. Correct, correct. I think we have two Canadian authors that we're bringing on to campus, Wayne Grady and Marilyn Simmons, and they're very prolific authors with a lot of different backgrounds, not only in print and publication, but Marilyn also has a lot of artwork and different kind of concepts behind that kind of feel all the work that she does. They're both going to be here for a number of different events, participating in classes, some open readings, also participating in our annual Degruesome Lecture, more information on our library website or the University calendar. In the next couple of weeks, we'll have a lot more information since there is about five
or six different activities that they're participating in that we really want to promote to a community. And that's why I want to bring this up. Sure, these are authors and that's my, may have they have gotten their start to be known as authors, but I like that they're speaking about other things that going to be coming on author, you know, a writer, I don't want to call them lectures, but I mean, because that has an adequate negative connotation, but I mean that's what I've never heard of these people, these Canadian authors, but learning and understanding how they write, that's interesting to me. Well, and I think one of the elements that I was so interested in working and in setting these things up is that we have students here that want to go into these career paths and being able to speak to or hear from somebody who can tell them, here are the things that we ran into the barriers, the successes, the things that we had Wayne Grady, for example, is not only known for currently some of his works of fictions, but also for over the years
doing a lot of translations, working about historical works, one of the, one of the works that he's going to be talking about is about the great licks and how he conveys historical and environmental information in a way that is entertaining that people can understand. Or hey Leone, learning how to reach librarian at the Leonard H. Axe Library and an assistant professor at Pittsburgh State University, speaking about the author's reception, taking place Thursday November 1st in the first floor of the Axe Library. The event begins at 3 p.m. and is open to the public. The annual Gene DeGrooson Memorial Lecture will be held on Tuesday November 13th at 7 p.m. In the governor's room of the Overman Student Center here at Pittsburgh State, you can learn more about both of these events by visiting the Axe Library's website at ax.pittstate.edu.
