four five oh three five two four now. Deon works here. Oh. Ladies and gentlemen, you know, I try my very, very best to be a source of good advice to those who need it. So for those Argentinians who may be wondering, hey, we borrowed at least as much money from Western banks in the 70s and got at least as bankrupt from doing it as Poland did and our economy is at least as screwed up now. How come the president doesn't come come down to a country and his very own hemisphere and at least drop $125 million in the bucket? We would be grateful for that drop. We wouldn't be like, you know, the polls going, hey, where's the five billion? Advice to those Argentinians. Babe, you gotta go
communist first, then come back. That's good advice from Hello. Welcome to the show. You know, don't cry, cause she leaves you. She's not break up, don't let her hurt you now. I need somebody, I want somebody to love. Don't cry, cause she leaves you. She's not break up, don't let her hurt you now. Don't cry, cause she leaves you. She's not break up, don't let her hurt you now.
You know I would have died for you. You know I would have cried for you, but now you're gone. Out of my life, now you're gone. Out of my life. Don't cry, cause she leaves you. She's not break up, don't let her hurt you now. Don't cry, cause she leaves you. It's gotta be someone out there who's gonna love me. And I know deep down inside, she'll keep me going.
Don't cry, cause she leaves you. She's not break up, don't let her hurt you now. Don't cry, cause she leaves you. She's not break up, don't let her hurt you now. Don't cry, cause she leaves you. Don't cry, cause she leaves you. You're pain, you're drunk, you blow your own trumpet in. You're shippin' in and you're fanfare song in.
The tide has come, our love's gone forever. I stand on the shore as it floats down the river. Free boy, I have a choice, I have a special spell. The phrase was shot but now I'm future's gay. I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down. I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down, I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down.
I'm banging my head to watch without maddening. I bet all your friends compare this to that of it. So under the arm, I feel the cold shoulder, shoulder. So I won't say again, I have to play the wild robot, robot, robot. I have a choice, I have a special spell. The phrase was shot but now I'm future's gay. I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down.
I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down, I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down. I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down, I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down. I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down, I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down.
I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down, I have my hopes so hard that they're all right down. So long, my love, goodbye, farewell to you. So long, my love, it's obviously through. Let's make the final scene nice and clean, no aftermath, omit the bitter talk and just walk us a separate path.
Face it, the shortest kiss is now an endless thing. I seem to miss bells that used to ring. So like they say in front of when romance is all finished, please give me my shapo, cause I gotta get good. I'll say so long, my love before you say it to me. Let's face it, the shortest kiss is now an endless thing.
I seem to miss bells that used to ring. So like they say in front when romance is all finished, please give me my shapo. I gotta get rolling, I'll say so long, my love, to talk, my love, take a walk, my love before you say it to me. Well, Francis on our minds so much these days, don't you find? Hey, transmission engineers in Washington, the show has begun, it's just a friendly notice because last week they didn't know it.
The stations that carry this show live and God bless you, you missed the first eight minutes but it was just the usual fill. And hi, I'm the usual Harry, this is Lesho and did you happen ladies and gentlemen to see the best deal day festivities? Not the highlights that were on the local or the network news but one of the cable channels, arts and entertainment and commercials and more commercials. They carried a lot of the festivities, they carried the BBC coverage so you got to hear a guy with a British accent and a guy with a very thick French accent which to me gave it a whole kind of a transatlantic feel, which I like. But boy, were those great fireworks, attention, city of Santa Monica, those are the kind of fireworks you can put off a dawn and people will notice them and not just because they wake them up with the sound. They notice them because you can see them, beautiful fireworks. Congratulations, Paris, do it again, about a hundred years from now, won't you?
A tale of two cities, Washington, T.C., normally is the kind of town that if people are buzzing there about a news story, whether we deserve to or not, we in the rest of the country are bombarded with it just because the kids in the capital can't keep their mouths shut about what they can't keep their mouths shut. But interestingly enough, there is a story that according to my friends in Washington has been preoccupying dinner conversation in our nation's capital for about the last three weeks and my bet would be that you haven't heard about it or have heard very little about it. This is for real, ladies and gentlemen. It's a story that was broken by the other daily newspaper in Washington, the Washington Times, which many alleged, this is incidental, but maybe not so incidental. Many alleged has ties to the Unification Church of Reverend Sun Myeong-moon. Anyway, the story relates to the existence during the Reagan administration of a high level, well, back up, the existence during the Reagan administration of a gay prostitution ring, which had high level contact in the White House so much so that certain members of the ring were taken on midnight tours of the White House.
And the paper has gone so far as to publish a photograph of a secret service man with one of the members of the ring in one of the midnight tours. Now, here's the only reason I bring this up. Why don't we hear about this? It sounds like good fun. What's the matter with us? Has the rest of the media not picked this up just because of the Washington Times being kind of on the fringe of reputable journalism, so they think like they would know. Or just because the names haven't gotten high level enough. Or is there another reason? I just, I raised this just because I know that some people in the audience like to like to have conspiracy theories. And there's been a shortage of grist for that particular male recently. So there you go, chew on that.
And also from our Washington file, just a tribute to Vice President Dan Quail, who was in turn paying tribute as so many of us are. Right about now to the momentous event that occurred 20 years ago, the Apollo moon landing. Vice President Quail yesterday paid tribute to it as the day when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Lucan walked on the moon. Now, we know who he was thinking about. Buzz Aldrin. Buzz Lucan is a Republican congressman who was recently charged with, and I believe convicted of sex with an underage young woman. Natural mistake. Easy to make. If he'd only studied more Latin, you know, he wouldn't make mistakes like that. Ladies and gentlemen, they'll be telephone fun on this edition of Lesho for for some of you. But meanwhile, in the in the waning moments of our paying tribute department, let's stop and smell the coffee that was brewed last Tuesday at the end of the first inning of baseball's all star game. Well, sir, all of us are indeed proud and grateful and delighted that you could time out to spend an inning and in minutes of the of the meeting, it should be duly noted that we had the most runs in the first inning of an all star game in 10 years.
So you brought a little excitement to the night. What I'd like to think that I'm so sorry that it's all over from me now and I have to confess I was a little uptight because as I say, when I was sitting up in a place like this, I had to tell the people what was happening because they couldn't see it. No, I get a little self conscious when I know the people can see what's going on. We were so thrilled just to have you at it. So thank you very much. I just I want to thank you for the opportunity and for letting me be up here for a little while. It's it's taken me down the down a very nostalgic lane. Well, we were delighted to make the trip with you. Thank you again, sir, very much. Thank you. All right, check me on this. Was he unable to remember the phrase memory lane? Is that what was going on there? Could he not remember memory lane? Me too. I'm so sorry. It's all over for him.
Is that what was going on there? Is that what was going on there? Is that what was going on there?
Is that what was going on there? Is that what was going on there? Here's an invitation. I'm glad I didn't respond to.
This is the follow-up letter to the invitation to our friends in the entertainment industry. We hope you enjoyed the spin magazine party at the Hard Rock Cafe. However, we are well aware that some of you had difficulty gaining entrance to the party and that some people did not get in at all. Excluding press, 250 people were invited to the party. More than 600 people showed up. Most of those additional 350 were friends of friends invited by a band came with five other guests on one invitation or some other arrangement. Even after admitting some 150 guests over the fire code. Don't tell the chief. Some people were bound to be left out and there was no way to differentiate over who was most entitled to be admitted with the limited space. Though most people remained reasonable and patient. Some guests barraged staff without rages requests, verbal abuse and threats. Tempers were bound to become short under those circumstances and the Hard Rock dormant unfortunately responded to some abuse in kind.
And for that we offer heartfelt apology. The spin party is one of many events that will be held at the Hard Rock Cafe in the coming months and we would like you to feel welcome. Should we again have the opportunity to have you as our guests? Thank you. I should like to feel that way. And just let's just leave it at that. Now ladies and gentlemen, this is sort of an annual tradition that doesn't happen every year here. But it's happening this year. It is happening. Many are the ways in which various parts of the media industry attempt to handicap the race among the three networks. One of the advertising agencies makes a specialty of having their media gurus see all the pilots for the new season. And then predict which ones are winners and which ones are losers and how various networks will fare and so forth. As you know, as you may know, if you've been with this program for a while, we got a different way of doing it.
We play you the songs that each of the networks has chosen as its anthem to go forward into the new season. And moments from now we will ask you to vote for your favorite network based on those songs. This is a gimmick that's only good if you're listening to the show live at 11 o'clock AM Pacific time you can call. And I'll give you the number moments from now. First of all, because they're number three and they're trying so darn hard, let's hear a little bit of the backstory about the song and the campaign that CBS has chosen. Now we're ready to address the issue at hand. Today we're going to get ready, forget ready. There are many strengths to our Get Ready slogan. It evolves from last year's Are You Ready campaign. It provides consistency and continuity and look and feel. It's part of our street language. It communicates the sense of momentum and energy. It's a battle cry for stations and the network.
It has unlimited local applications and it creates anticipation. It offers a connection between the anticipation of the 90s and the new season on CBS. It's our call to action as we ask America to get ready for the 90s and get ready for CBS. Our campaign reflects a feeling, a position and attitude. The 90s will be a time of change, of new experiences and new choices. The advent of the new decade will bring plenty of media focus, conversation and attention. We want to be a big part of it. We see an opportunity and we're grabbing on. Get Ready sets the tone that CBS will enter the 90s aggressively with a new energy, a new feel. The 90s will be our decade. The Get Ready campaign is cohesive. It works across all of our product lines. It blends entertainment, news and sports every part of our network. Big stars, quick cuts, great music, bright graphics. That's our formula. CBS is coming on strong.
The 90s are coming and they'll be here in only seven short months. This campaign's positioning gives you and CBS an edge. A sense of ownership with a trip to the 90s, a journey all America will share, one which we want to lead as the network of the 90s. From now on, every time you hear Get Ready, you'll think of CBS. That's what we want all America to do. That's a reasonable goal. There's a 90s thing happening. It's Get Ready. Now, that's just for your information and entertainment. Don't let that affect your voting ladies and gentlemen. Please vote purely on the merits of the songs. As we usually do, we try to discern the probably coincidental, thematic element that all three networks tend to stumble on simultaneously. See what you sus out of all this is the same as what I get out of it. Anyway, number one for your voting consideration and number one, meaning number three, because that's their position in the ratings at the moment, CBS with the fabulous Get Ready.
Stand on any corner, walk down any street, you can see that something's coming, you can almost feel the heat. Anything can happen in the blood of our eyes. Get Ready. Get Ready. Get Ready. Get Ready. Get Ready. Get Ready. Get Ready. Ready. Get Ready, The 90s. All you're ready for that. Did you ever think it would happen so fast. You know what's going down? Can't you see what's coming next? All you're ready for the 90s.
But here I'm, baby Aw, boy, get ready Get the look around Everybody's dressed That's the style, that's the style C, C, S, C, B, Y I got shot to move the brown bag J, R, H, R, D, R J, R Girls with all the trim Look like small Designing women So come on now, let them sit Don't be messin' It's C, B, X, S Get ready, C, B, X Here comes tomorrow Are you ready to say It's a whole new game Are you ready to say The nights are coming Like a runaway express So come on Come on And get ready to say
Are we ready? Yes, ready You can sit home Yes, ready Mark, you can fall Yes, ready We're gonna take your hire Every time you look at Sydney high Yes, ready Yes, ready Must be me Yeah, we're ready Say, say, say, we ask Okay, that was CBS Now, let me just lay on you my theory of what they're all stumbling into here, which is a certain blackness in approach, don't you think? See what you think as we hear from the good people at number two, ABC. Something good is happening to me, yeah, yeah, in the morning light, well I got to work
my fingers to the phone, yeah, yeah, when the evening comes, I just lost the door and reached for my note, yes I do, yes I can see love, and I can hear your love, I can feel you down. Do your own TV
Everybody, can be somebody Come on now, lean your song now In the daytime, all night long There's something here on ABC You got to pay tribute to these people for sticking with the incredibly evanescent slogan Something's happening for now I think the third year in a row Of course it fits into the 90s too, in a way Anyway, see what I'm saying about, you know, if the programming had as much blackness as the music, they might all be more entertaining Anyway, here's number one, NBC, come on to the bed, only on NBC
Our face is your face, our house is your house Go celebrate with us that homeless call You're the exciting, sharing the good time Only something you can believe it Only somewhere you can get it all Only on NBC, join the family Come on to the bed, only on NBC Ooh, yeah, yeah That's just flowing, the stars are coming Where the couplings are brighter Only somewhere you just can't learn Only on NBC, NBC, I was above the red Only on NBC, NBC, come on to the best Only on NBC, NBC, where you want to be Come on to the bed, only on NBC Okay, a listener jumped the gun
But he called up to say that he and his wife were feeling were made to feel so sexy by the CBS song that they had to cast their votes Quickly, if you're in the live listening area You can call now 2-1-3-4-5-0-3-5-2-4 All of American media is hanging on the results of this vote Based on these songs, which network do you think will be number one? This year, call now, won't you? Come down off your throne wall Leave your body alone Somebody's got to change his head You are the reason I have been waiting for so long Somebody holds a key, it ain't me Well, I'm a million, am I high?
Yeah, just ain't got the time But it's more I'm wasted and I can't find my way home Really, I know Come down on your own home Leave your money alone Somebody's got to change You are the reason I have been waiting all these years Somebody holds a key, well, I'm a million, am I high? Yeah, just ain't got the time But it ain't me
Well, I'm a million, am I high? Come down off your throne wall Leave your body alone Somebody's got to change You are the reason I have been waiting for so long Somebody holds a key, it ain't me
Well, I'm a million, am I high? Yeah, just ain't got the time But it's more I'm wasted and I can't find my way home It's more I'm wasted and I can't find my way home It's more I'm wasted and I can't find my way home Support for this program comes from the CPR Arts and Performance Fund Contributors to the Fund include the CPR contributions to other funds fund
The Hazardous Materials Institute Foundation and the Corporation for Potluck Broadcasting From CPR Continental Public Radio, this is said and done A weekly audio magazine of the Arts and the Arts I'm a Viva Schlarm and sitting in for Chris Edwards who's off on a genius grant One of this summer's major movie hits is about to inspire an equally wacky sequel and it may shed the warm light of family entertainment on a subject once thought too close to home Incessed, I Rezipkin Reports At Settle, please Scene 33 Apple, take 35 And action Honey, don't be mad You yourself said she was cute
I'll cute you Walt Busby Studios were famous for the g-rated pictures of Hollywood's heyday But several years ago, the studio launched a second brand name, Silverstone Pictures that would turn out films with more sophisticated content Now, at a sound stage at its Florida theme park Director John Eric Vincent is shooting with the studio hopes will be one of next summer's most talked about and looked at movies Honey, I slept with the kids Okay, and let's cut it And let's print that one Which was the one where she dropped the blender? 23, print 23 Don Katzenheimer came to me Actually, he called me, I went to his office, but he said to me John Eric, this is an important subject If it was done on TV it would have to be handled A serious statement kind of film, we want to go a different way We want to take our honey, eye, franchise and deepen it, strengthen it, get into something very real with it
and still be just incredibly funny And, you know, police boat had just been canceled, so I was free I said, sure I was very concerned when I first read the script The movie is leading lady Cheryl and Dark Because on an emotional level, I had to live with this monster who was terribly warping the futures of our children But on the other hand, there were these very big block comedy scenes Like the one in the family therapist's office And I didn't know if I could do both things But John Eric encouraged me to use my improv background And of course, Nettie Lapidus is just about the nuttyest abusive father anyone has ever seen But is this commercial exploitation of a serious social problem? And if so, is that a bad thing? Silverstone Pictures head of production Dan Katzenheimer says no to both questions I'll be very frank with you, Ira
We would love this picture to do absolute blockbuster business, no question about it But this is a real problem for a lot of families And it's hard to talk about And if, you know, one family comes in, sees this picture And because of the comedy or the great soundtrack Jermaine Jackson is doing for us or whatever You know, is opened up about this and starts talking about this thing Then boom, we have made a contribution Excuse me Here are the out cold people who are available Thanks Be more stupid next time Sorry Where will we? And without Nett Lapidus, of course We're not making this picture in a million years We're green lighting something very safe about a talking microwave oven or something But Nett brings that magic and that gives us the courage to do what we know is right Come on, kitten Daddy's taking you to the ice cupades But daddy They don't come in the town until February
Oh, you're right Daddy's little girl was always so smart I, well, forget the cupades Let's just go look at the ice Honey, I slept with the kids She's being theaters next summer I'm Iris Ipkin in Orlando, Florida And cut When the late Sir Lawrence Olivier, who died this week agreed to do television commercials for Polaroid cameras He was a first up to then successful actors Thought commercials were beneath them The territory of actors who still had to make a living The Olivier Polaroid spots changed all of that today Even Woody Allen and Paul Newman do TV commercials Although theirs are seen only abroad Now, another line has been crossed maybe for good Ipkin has this story Here's a demo that Brinkley did for us The American Devil Association recommends it People who do it seem not to mind it too much
But how many of us floss every day? Linda Laby started it with her Maxwell House commercials But Richard Craig, known in New York as the newsman's super agent, has picked up the ball and is sprinting toward the goalpost with it Craig has shot sample commercials with all of the news personalities he represents And response, he says So is good Waxed, flavored or regular If your teeth good as far they would See? You believe him? More than you'd believe Martha Ray or Gordon Jopper, someone like that So yeah, the advertising community is very impressed with the critical mass of credibility that we have here What about the news community? The LRB commercials were quite controversial, weren't they? Well, at the Columbia Journalism School, mate Real world look Everybody who gets on that tube is selling at the very least themselves So if you want to add on top of that, then advertisers message is just like going from mono to stereo
But not everyone agrees NBC anchor Tom Broca is critical of his auditioning colleagues It's just wildly inappropriate And the loss of credibility, it's something you can measure, but you better believe it's real So you would never do commercials? Let me put it this way If I was also going to be managing editor of the commercial, I'd at least have to consider it But never, just as an on-camera spokesman No way Meanwhile, back at Agent Richard Craig's office This is an actual test commercial that they did, it's running in Rowan Oak, Virginia next month, as a matter of fact It's John McLaughlin, you know the McLaughlin group, those people Here Issue one, problems with ordinary adult diapers, quickly bond John, just not reliable enough, that's what my sources tell me They should know, Pat, turn, let's face it, everybody knows when you're wearing them You're speaking of tell, tell, bout, you bet I am I'm Iris Ipgin, on Lower Fifth Avenue, in Manhattan
And that's why new, amends, other groups' choice And for this week, that said and done Next week, science and art join hands We'll meet a bio-chemist trying to use gene splicing techniques to create dogs and cats With the big eyes of a Walter Keane painting Until then, that's all that's been said and done John, sad and done I'm a Thievish Lorman, have a creative week This is CPR, cut and mental public radiance Still time to vote Music Oh, God, you need travel and choose
Drive your problems from here Oh, good people read good books Now your conscience is clear, I hear you talk, girl Now your conscience is clear In the morning when I wipe my brow, wipe the miles away I'd like to think I can be so willed And never do what you say, I'll never hear you And never do what you say Look, my eyes are just hollow grounds Look, your love has drawn it from my hands From my hands, you know you'll never be More than to assist in my sobriety More than to assist in my sobriety More than to assist in my sobriety
We just put a little empty pie For the fun the people had at night Late at night, they don't need our stillity Damn it, smile and pause to free I don't care about their different thoughts Different thoughts are good for good Up in arms and chasing home All good students took their toll Look, my eyes are just hollow grounds Look, your love has drawn it from my hands From my hands, you know you'll never be More than to assist in my sobriety More than to assist in my sobriety
More than to assist in my sobriety Time to think here, time to risk life, life, life, sweet and handsome Soft and bulky, you figure out that you've seen the light You figure out that you've seen the light Up in arms and chasing home All good students took their toll Up in arms and chasing home
All good students took their toll Look, your love has drawn it from my hands From my hands, you know you'll never be More than to assist in my sobriety More than to assist in my sobriety Look, my eyes are just hollow grounds Look, your love has drawn it from my hands From my hands, you know you'll never be More than to assist in my sobriety More than to assist in my sobriety More than to assist in my sobriety
So I was pumping my own gas this week Like I do to save money And I noticed on the signs on top of the gas pumps That's space that used to go to waste And now that they use it to advertise other things they sell Because they're expanding, they're, they're ambit And one of the signs on top of the gas pump was advertising a sale on transmission fluid And had a little drawing of a can of transmission fluid And right next to it on the adjacent pump was the sign advertising diadcola Swear to God it had the same drawing It just, you know, I hope I just hope that their inventory control Is good enough that you don't have to worry about, you know Them being confused about the cans looking alike It's the same worry that always prayed on me when I'd see a place
That advertised it's, it's wears as party and sick room equipment And I just could always visualize Well, we could have a party with all these wheelchairs guys I don't know, anyway the votes are in, let's see This is the tote just in, this just in We have to add two CBS votes that I took over here on my side of the desk Ooh, it's close Sixteen votes for ABC Fifteen votes for CBS You can't get much, well you could get, you could get one vote closer Nine votes for NBC Four votes for Fox, which doesn't have a song as of yet Three votes for PBS, which will never have a song One undecided, two CNN and one arts and entertainment people People, people, focus, will you on the question at hand? So for everybody who is wondering, ABC comes in first this year Hey, it's been fun, everybody, thanks for your help
They got it rock, they got it rock We're here until the phones ring The laws are getting rocked We're jettin' out to freedom Some of us shouldn't expect Some seem to be the same The singer sounds terrific The person won't appear until they stop in the chat They got it rock, they got it rock They got it rock, they got it rock Hey, long distance for sensor off No more romance
CBS is gonna be a great favorite dance Hey, land, it come on, take a chance A rest to say they love it but the kids think that's the lit We're here like a different direction It never was ahead Someone in the loose paper said it was shit The drummer is a broken, the singer is a war The bass player says he'll never win a war They got it rock, they got it rock They got it rock, they got it rock They got it rock, they got it rock Hey, long distance for sensor off
No more romance CBS is gonna be a great favorite dance Hey, land, it come on, take a chance A rest to say they love it but the kids think that's the lit We're here like a different direction It never was ahead Someone in the loose paper said it was shit The drummer is a broken, the singer is a war The bass player says he'll never win a war They got it rock, they got it rock They got it rock, they got it rock They got it rock, they got it rock And now ladies and gentlemen, this is the quiet and serious
and possibly mockish portion of this week's program Because I can't let this broadcast end without indulging in a moment of reflection Probably more personal than I normally do on this program But I started out in the business as a child actor on the Jack Many Radio program And normally my parents, one or the two of them, would sit upstairs And a little booth right above the control room So that if anything ever went wrong during the broadcast And these were live broadcasts This was the magic of live I could look up there and at least get reassured I was like seven or eight And about the fifth or sixth show that I worked My mother decided she wanted to see the audience's eye view of the show She sat out in the audience instead of upstairs
Which meant that she was visually speaking lost in a sea of about 300-400 people And I figured, hey, I'm eight, I can handle it Coincidentally though, the Jack Many Show introduced its cast members to the studio audience Before the show went on the air And everyone in the cast stood out in the hallway at CBS And waited to hear the voice of Jack Many's announcer Don Wilson introduced them And then you would walk into the studio and acknowledge your applause and take a seat And I was standing out in the corridor chatting with my elders And suddenly I thought I heard Don Wilson yelling out, Harry, Harry! And I opened the door to the studio and ran out on stage And I got the biggest laugh I've ever gotten in my career Because Don Wilson was introducing Mary Livingston and had been yelling Mary! Mary!
At moments like that you realize that you go into comedy so that people will laugh at you only when you want them to And the person that I sat down next to who reassured me enough that I was able to continue On the program that night, gave me the strength, so to speak, was Mel Blank, who died this week My thanks to Jim, Dan, and Chuck For helping in the preparation of this week's age
And my congratulations to all the New York Nick fans Hey you guys have the youngest coach in the league Thanks to all who voted in our silly radio game And thanks to you for listening, the show returns next week at this very same time On probably a stable number of these same stations See you then, thanks for listening The show comes to you from century of progress, productions, and originates through the facilities of SAS A satellite service of KCRW in Santa Monica Now moments from now stay tuned, no, can't be now and moments from now Now stay tuned moments from now for a new program
