This time on a motorway. So says it on a more full sized growth and a little company that good. So come drive with us. With. TV's original automotive magazine with your host from over week John Davis. Well hello and welcome again to motor week we're glad to have you with us. When Enzo Ferrari died in 1988 the automotive world lost a legend with the passing of his founder has not kept the prancing horse from continuing to produce many of the world's most coveted sports cars and dominating Formula 1 racing. And it's the Formula 1 race cars which were always the most important to Mr. Ferrari that inspired the Enzo Ferrari. But can any car be worthy of the end zone name. Well only the track will tell the the. The. Enzo Ferrari was much more than just a man who built cars.
Once a talented racer himself he devoted much of his life to the pursuit of automotive glory building many of history's most exciting cars both road and racing. Under his guidance for Rory's prancing horse became a worldwide symbol for automotive excitement as well as the ultimate symbol that you will run and a part of a very special and affluent tribe led by Yule commendatory himself. So when the people of Ferrari decided to build a car they would bear the name of their late great founder. They knew that it would have to be the ultimate in performance technology and price. Even sitting in its transporter the Enzo is an imposing sight. Enzo 6 leader of the 12 fires quickly in the cool morning air dripping with the sound of 650 anxious horses and 485 down feet up toward the throttle blimps and slowly the beast emerges from its cage. Unlike ordinary Ferrari's the Enzo doesn't seduce you with its sensual curves. Or play hard to get with an air of athletic indifference. No it
reaches right out and slaps you in the face with its brazen styling its stance dares you to climb aboard as if saying come on let's go around or two if you're man enough. Enzo looks more like a Formula One race or than a street car and for good reason. Much of it stark simple design is based on the same aerodynamic principles used to build Mr. Schumacher his championship winning F1 car the stubby twin canopy nose brake sharply back to a forward mounted cockpit. The back end is essentially a giant engine cover but shaped to manage the flow of air rushing over and under the car. Inside the cockpit could have been lifted from an F1 car as well. Carbon fiber abandoned the dash houses only a few essential gauges and heater control. You won't find yards of Leatherwood in chrome trim here not even power windows are allowed. After all when you're making serious speed weight is an enemy type carbon fiber leather covered racing buckets face a steering wheel crammed full of
switches for traction control ride height. You can raise it by 1.4 edges for rubber pavement and computer function. A row of melodies across the top of the rim serves as RPM shift indicator. Everything works to focus the driver's eyes where they belong on the road ahead and the next. Rapidly approaching corner and this case those corners where the ten familiar turns of our favorite winter playground Savannah Georgia's Roebling road Raceway. We approach the Enzo with some trepidation knowing full well the awesome performance reputation of the car we expected it to be a double handful to tame on the racetrack. Well we couldn't have been more wrong. Simply put the Enzo Ferrari is absolutely the easiest to drive high performance car that we have ever tested. Turn the wheel and there's no coaxing it and the power steering means no fighting for control. It simply goes where you point it steers with such precision that our drivers were forced to erase their memories of how to drive
each quarter or risk turning into soon and running off the inside edge. Connecting the Enzo Ferrari to the track. Our set of 35 series 19 inch Bridgestone potential scudi aero tire 240 5s up front 340 5s outback the suspension set up as a trick or arrangement of upper and lower a arms with horizontally opposed push rod coil springs and electronically adjustable tube shocks. They keep the Enzo tracking flat and stable even under the most extreme cornering loads. With all of this amazing technology the Enzo might blow a driver into complacency if it weren't for all of that power. Kind of holding the car from corner to corner six speeds paddle shifters produce rapid smooth shifts and this speeds this car generates are just as quickly insane. We saw 171 miles per hour at the end of the half mile straight up full 10 miles faster than the impressive Ferrari 575 m 0 to
60 as a boy. Three point three seconds a lap times were flat one minute 20 seconds for the two mile course. That's four seconds quicker than the 575 or about half the length of the straightaway. Reining that power in our 15 inch carbon ceramic disc at all four corners. These abs assisted dinner plates served up great gobs of any walk slow down power. The brake pedal requires some effort but feel is excellent and fade is never an issue. Now you don't find $660000 cars like this sitting in a manufacturer's press fleet waiting for the phone to ring. So we have our private collections reporter Ron Spangler. We're tracking down an owner willing to let a group of strangers touch his in so much less pounded on the racetrack that man's name is exotic car enthusiasts Nelson Kim Bondy who not only loaned us his car but came along to watch and applauded our efforts at stopping the trade from his in those tires. Our brief time and one of
only 399 in zos ended all too quickly but the memories of this amazing car will not soon fade. Thank you Nelson. And can we say Same time next year. Coming up. On the fall of history. You know everybody has Karkare problems some time. And who better to guide us through the auto repair maze and motor week Mr. Wizard of the ranch Pat Goss. John this time we're going to talk about some items that will make the life of the professional technician and the weekend racer easier. Going to start with a new line of tools from Ingersoll-Rand. These are air tools and their claim to fame is that their composite composite materials make the tool lighter they absorb vibration and they make it very durable. They're available for grinders like
this reciprocating saw as a complete line of air impact wrenches ranging from three eight's up to three quarters of an inch. And there's even one that has titanium incorporated in it to make it ultra light and ultra powerful. These are really great tools. Now here's something that isn't new but it can save your head. This is a tool that clamps onto struts on hoods and hatches so if you're working on it and it happens to have a weak strut Well they have a habit of coming down and blanking you in the head with this clamped on to the strut the hood or the hatch. It's not going to come down. All right here's something brand new. Holes all. And to explain this to us we have Lee We're sure he's the inventor of this piece of equipment Lee. Tell us about the holes all the holes always designed to be a safety drive system for moving today's larger tool boxes tool boxes today have grown and grown and grown to the point where they weigh almost as much as an
automobile. OK now in big shops for instance tool boxes have to be moved around on a regular basis sometimes and this is going to be the answer to that battery powered. That's correct. Comes with a charger. Yes it does. But what about the installation installation is designed to be very very simple it's designed to be fitted as a retrofit kit where you simply remove your existing casters your fixed casters from the box mount a piece of steel underneath a box and but right up and it's ready to go and it's available for all the popular makes and models a tool box for Mac Mac oh snap one craftsman. Just about any box you could think of. OK what about chopping up the box I see you've got a controller on the side here. OK a magnet on a magnet so there's no damage to the box none whatsoever. Now this would also be great for the weekend Racer where they go through all of this struggle to get the tool box back on the trailer. This would just be ideal for that application. Thank you ladies. If you have a question or comment write to me.
The address is Motor Week always Mills Maryland. 1 1 1 7. This is the most respected automotive museums and you'll see Packard's Duesenberg scored my box and probably a lot of marks you've never even heard of but don't expect to see many cars from Honda. Despite its great success in the automotive field Hondas cars rarely take center stage in automotive collections but rarely doesn't mean never. So what is this mysterious car museum where Honda's takes center stage. It's the Honda collection Hall located at the Twin Ring motel racetrack into Japan. The museum opened in 1998 to commemorate Honda's 50th anniversary. It's taken us a while to get there but the collection was definitely worth the wait. Inside the museum you'll find three floors of Japanese automotive history to discover on the first floor we find some of Honda's earliest models as well as historically important vehicles from some of
Honda's home country counterparts. It's when you get to the second floor that things really start to get interesting. It is here where you find many of Honda's milestone designs as well as some more recent additions. Many of these cars may not look familiar since they were never available in the U.S. but all the vehicles are in running condition with many being stored originals and in case you forgot Honda's rolling history actually started out on two wheels. From the earliest motorcycles Honda had a reputation for quality and ease of use. That tradition continues today. Another tradition that continues is Honda's dedication to motor sports. There are many fine examples of their corporate determination past and present. On the third floor. Everything from open wheel racers to Hondas first F1 car.
To championship winning motorcycles and race winning motor cross bikes. Honda is proof that racing does improve the breed. But don't stop now. There's still plenty more to see. The Honda collection haul is a beautiful museum that not only showcases Honda's dedication to performance innovation and quality but also tracks the history of automobiles around the Pacific Rim from some of the earliest examples of motorized bicycles. Today's cutting edge racing and automotive technology. It's not exactly around the corner but if you do find yourself in the land of the Rising Sun whether you're a Honda fan or not up on a bullet train to just cheeky and check out the Hyundai collection HALL It's a different view of automotive history and it would be a shame to miss it. We've gotten very comfortable driving our 2004 Mitsubishi endeavor over the last five months and nearly 16000 miles this midsize crossover
SUV shares its chassis with the latest galon sedan. Having driven some 40 500 miles in the last month alone with a trip first to cool and rainy Savannah and then on to the ice and snow of Chicago we continue to be impressed with most aspects of the endeavor including ride and the willing power of its 215 orse power 3.8 leader V-6. The automatic all wheel drive system is invisible when handling winters worse. All that plus a respectable eighteen point six miles per gallon economy. We are having two electrical faults however the power lock on the driver's door isn't working and the power rear windows won't go down. That aside with so many to choose from you might overlook the endeavor. But if you do you'll be sorry. The Mazda 6 is a family sedan that doubles as an every man's Ford or sports sedan branded RV 6 the current model with the sport package is top of the line but it still goes for just over 25 grand
before you start to bargain and a very capable car starts in an even better 19:3. Either way performance is a cut above its mostly family sedan rivals our cars 23 miles per gallon is not shabby either. We also like the styling that makes an unusually aggressive statement for its class. And even with a driver friendly interior it has more than enough room for a growing family. No mechanical problems have befallen our 6 although the 5 speed manual shift linkage is losing some smoothness especially in the cold. Otherwise the Mazda 6 is about as sweet as an affordable family Ford or can get the all new 2004 Nissan Pathfinder Armada is among the largest sport utility vehicles you can get this full frame full size four wheel drive SUV joins our fleet just says the worst of winter sets in with a robust power and a comfortable versatile interior. We'll see how well this big boy satisfies us over the next four seasons.
Time for another visit with this Pontiac Grand Prix and our new Chrysler Pacifica on the next motor week long term road test update. Time now to check in with Jessica for all of this week's Motor News. Grab your gloves and parka because it's that time of year again time for the 2004 edition of the Chicago Auto Show. So let's see what swarming the auto industry in the windy city this year. Dropped in downtown Chicago the atmosphere inside McCormick Place South was heating up with a good balance of new concepts and production models of great importance the General Motors is the vehicle GM hopes will revive Buicks car lineup the 2005 across the midsize sedan is more than just a replacement for the century and regal it sportier and more elegant. This Ford Orbost jag like smooth lines over a ridge of conservative interior. And updated suspension and a choice of either a carry over three point eight leader pushrod B6 or the newer Twin Cam 3.6 liter
B6 sales for the cross begin this fall. Ford hopes to wake up its Mercury line with a new premium sedan the 2005 Montego to be built in Chicago this close kin to the Ford 500 has an upscale European look a standard B6 and a choice of front will drive sales. Also begin this fall. And wear better than over Kaschalk Aagot today due to oil those sunny new 2005 Camry celerity convertible based on the current Solera coupe. The convertible receives an in-house conversion featuring a one button powered top with large rear glass and defroster a richer interior. It where spoiler and 17 inch alloys look for the Slayer convertible to hit dealer lots next month. Pickup trucks also made big impressions at Chicago. Dodge is all new mid-sized Dakota is bigger and more powerful for 2005 offering the only V-8 in its class. The Dakota adds a ram like front end a fully boxed frame and a new suspension. The Dakota and a four door extended club cab or quad cab
will be a follow rival making big noise on the Toyotas stage was this 2005 Tacoma Exxon or pickup truck. The all new Tacoma Gross from Compaq to almost mid-size as one of four versions of the new Tacoma yaks Runner Sports for doors. A former leader of the six and a hardware package with 18 inch wheels ground effects. And fog lamps. If there's one name we didn't expect to see on a pick up truck it's Kiya with no current plans to build this muscular little pickup named Mojave is calling it a concept for now but with its cap to bed access and sliding her seat it was the surprise star of Chicago kid's parent brand Hyundai the new compact crossover SUV the Tucson smaller than the Santa Fe Tucson is based on the power is a 4 6 cylinder with front drive when it arrives this summer. Curtain airbags will be standard. Tucson prices will top out at twenty two thousand dollars. So that's the scoop from Chicago for the February air is always cold and the cars are sizzling hot and that's it for
this week's Motor News. One of the fastest growing SUV segments is luxury utilities. They combine passion purpose like no other vehicle class. They can also cost an arm and a leg but you don't have to buy new to live the high end utility lifestyle. When Watts is introduced the R x 300 for 1999 it was the first luxury SUV based not on the truck but on a family car. The Toyota Camry although never intended for serious off road use the oryx 300 lore stands. Read some books and find randomly. Made it. An instant. In fact at one time the oryx 300 accounted for almost half of Lexus sales and caused a rush by rivals to build more civilized and Subi. Due to its popularity there are a lot of used arts 300 surround. Some are sold through Lexus dealers as certified used cars with warranties that are almost as
good as a new model. That alone makes the oryx 300 with the 3 liter V-6 in front of all wheel drive. An interesting buy but add to that well no Lexus quality and it's almost a slam dunk right. Well as good as the oryx 300 is it is far from perfect. Motor weeks Pat Goss suggests having a mechanic check for sludge buildup in the engine a potentially costly problem. If there is a shutter in the front end as you accelerate it could indicate a worn transmission heat it sees that don't get hot and automatic headlights that don't light when they should are two more minor but common problems. So have everything checked out because our x 3 hundreds are not cheap and 999 are x 300 still commands between eighteen thousand nine hundred dollars and twenty thousand seven hundred dollars while a two year old 2002 edition will fetch between twenty nine thousand eight hundred dollars and thirty two thousand one hundred dollars are only about 15 percent less than a new one. Popular equipment to
look for includes a knock Amaechi stereo alloy wheels and a power sunroof. That said the pioneering 1999 to 2003 Oryx 300 design is smooth confident and very luxurious. Line that even used if still at the top of its very posh clubs. Ask anyone who owns one and they'll tell you that the Toyota Tundra is a great pickup truck with good power a quiet interior and excellent quality yet the Tundra has been dogged by comments that it's not quite a full size pick up sort of 7 8. The real thing with smaller cabs cargo boxes and tow ratings than rivals. While for 2004 Toyota is addressing some of those issues with a new four door double cab. So is the tundra now ready to play with the big boys. Well it certainly has a shot on. Joining its regular and access can
siblings and the sporty step side added for 2003. The 2004 double cab is a clear attempt to correct the notion that tundra is less than full songs. The double cab is easily the biggest tundra yet. Like other light duty crew cabs It has four front here in stores. It rides on an extended will base of one hundred forty point five inches and at two hundred thirty point one inches long pose a six inch advantage over the old new Ford F-150 Super Krewe. Toyota put that extra length right where full sized pickup owners say they want it in the badly the double cab features a six and a quarter foot cargo box that's four inches deeper than the other tundra. At seventy four point three inches the tundra double cat bed is only a half inch shorter than that of the access cam but more importantly for image over seven inches longer than the cargo box for the Ford F-150 supergroup. Maximum payload rating for the double cab is eight hundred seventy five pounds the most yet for a Tundra and also superior to the
super group. In addition the double cab is three inches higher and four inches wider than other tundra models together that should be enough of a big rig presence to hold its own in the schoolyard. But there's still a problem. Despite bulking up. Double cab wears the same timid front in treatment it lacks the visual bluster of both domestic rivals and Nissan Titan. But it's 16 inch tires and wheels are small for its class. The interior of the double cab is attractive practical and full sized roomy. We've always felt cab design among the best features of the tundra. There's a well organized car like dash and the double standard captain's chair was nicely outfitted with large gauges efficient stereo easy to use rotary ventilation controls cruise and front power outlets limited tram upgrades the stereo and adds fog lights with leather an option where passengers enjoy thirty seven and a half inches of leg room.
That's less than the F-150. But more than the Dodge Ram Quad Cab includes rear air conditioning vents and is available with a rear DVD entertainment system. Recovered cargo space the 60 40 split fold and tumble rear seat is quite convenient and double cab also has the first vertical power back window. The opening is four times larger than the typical manual slider. There is only one engine for double cab. Toyota's familiar 4.7 leader dual overhead cam. I force it delivers 240 horsepower at 315 pound feet of torque capable of towing 60 800 pounds and easily the class movie. It lacks the bragging rights of more powerful be available on rivals. The sole transmission is also a carry over a four speed automatic that as we've said before delivers shifts worthy of a Lexus. That's with a B a 0 to 60 is dispatched in a fine 8 seconds flat. Our test trucks part time four wheel drive system allows you to choose
between two wheel drive or high and low range four wheel drive at the flip of a switch with an outstanding eleven point nine inches of ground clearance easily cleared this year's harsh mid-Atlantic snow. We gushed over dry road handling when we tested the 2003 tundra steps on. But the double camp is even more refined. It feels lighter and more nimble than rivals and the power rack and pinion steering delivers plenty of feedback. Unlike other Tundras delivers a very polished ride even the four by four and every day driving delivered 16 miles per gallon. Why good for a full sized pickup. EPA estimates are 14 city and 17 highway. Prices for the tundra double cab as our five started twenty six thousand one hundred eighty five dollars for two will draw I'd go for the four by four and the base tag goes to twenty eight thousand nine hundred seventy five dollars before option limited starts at twenty nine thousand eight hundred ten dollars with a limited four by four at thirty three thousand one hundred forty
dollars. Leather ads eleven hundred sixty dollars more. So while some may still dismiss Toyotas full size pick up as a small time competitor it's clear to us that the 2004 tundra is no new kid on the block and with a new double cab is more ready than ever to play with the big boys and not be benched. Well I hope you'll join us next week for more motorway Volkswagen's a big luxury sedan and hot hotter as 2000 sports car. I'm John Davis.
