She had another superlative addition to which there are six in the six. Well with that goal improving the C-5 quarterback this week's losses I am Henrico going to show you why Hammy's are just for cars anymore and will keep pace with a pair of high end high performance range rovers. So come drive with us next. Make yourself a special great mechanics and automotive tools. Stanley props to support public television. John Davis. Well hello and welcome again to motorway. We're glad to have you with us. Say Ferrari and everyone who hears it thanks all out me before Ari has built its share of luxury s Grand Touring Cars as well and the latest of these lavish Ferraris.
Is this fixed. Well scared yeah ok. It's comfortable but it's also oh so very quick. After all it is a Ferrari. The 2005 Ferrari 6 12 scout yet state isn't just another Italian car or even just another Ferrari. It's a big Ferrari significantly larger than its predecessor the 456 but this massive Grand Touring coupe named after famed coach builder Sergio skell yet he is notable for much more than just that sign. There's also the striking pin in Farina bunny inspired by the 1950s 375 mam. It's the first time all aluminum coach work has been used on a Ferrari beech Well now we could go on and on about the deep scallop side panels the tall fenders that blend into the projector beam lamp clusters and the flowing tail with its subtle spoiler.
But let's leave it to the words of the man who really knows his car. These days Foster duties lie he's in more room inside. Indeed he has more room for the baggage compact. Everything is more better than even more aggressive and this is important because the front look and you look of the car is that yeah they've got the Mideast booky heads up that Audi should be the fluid lines wrapped around an aluminum space frame chassis that helps keep weight down to a mere four thousand fifty six pounds but weight isn't a problem when you're packing a 5.7 leader all aluminum flood cam 48 Balbi 12 engine mounted behind the front axle. It's 540 horsepower and 434 pound feet of torque is true supercar power mated to the Big B 12 as either a six speed manual gearbox for the F1 a electro hydraulic 6 speed with a paddle shifters. The F1 A also offers an automatic mode and is linked to a new electronic stability and
traction system. This helps keep the wheels in line is even on a 90 degree plus day. The 6 12 hammers to 60 and 4.7 seconds and through the quarter mile in 13 seconds flat at 113 miles per hour. As expected the sweet smooth the 12 spins up fast delivering a healthy punch from the word go. But compared to the past for our AB twelves this one is almost quiet. The electronic gear box like its predecessors continues to shift partially at high throttle low gear changes are cleaner at small throttle openings and the engines massive torque allows you to cruise through traffic with minimal shifting. The lightweight chassis is complemented by a control arm suspension with adaptive damping. It delivers a remarkably supple ROI. But what's really remarkable is how beautifully balanced this 16 foot luxury cruiser is with only 45 percent of the weight over the front wheels. It turns like a car half its size. Dancing nimbly from quarter to quarter with no roll or instability only steering wheel needs
improving. Breaking is by huge bit it does with abs stop from 60 average to short and solid 118 feet with good feedback from the soft long treble pedal moving from performance to indulgence we find a stunning four seat cabin swaddled in acres of fine leather. The dash is distinctive but simple with little modern gadgetry to distract you from driving the gauges are split between an analog tack and Speedo and an LCD display for engine functions and fuel. While the audio system is a simple single CD configuration and the climate controls are hard to misuse dials and for that proper Ferrari feel a set of drilled aluminum pedals. The power operated front seats feature distinctive contrast in leather trim and offer good comfort for long drives but the rear buckets while equally attractive have no leg room to speak of so this is a true two plus two. The trunk is an unusual multi-level space that when fully utilized will hold a
weekend's worth of very expensive clothes which is what you'll wear when you can afford a car with a base price of two hundred fifty three thousand two hundred fifty dollars. That's with a six speed manual gearbox off for our test cars F1 a transmission and two hundred sixty five thousand two hundred fifty five dollars is the price to enter this very exclusive club a club where super car performance and super sedan luxury go hand in hand and one which only rare and special cars like the 2005 Ferrari 612 Scout Yeti are ever allowed to join. Coming up. Where can you put it to me. Time for our weekly stop at Goss's garage. Pat's topic this go around car care fixes put out plastic fantastic. Johnson five Corvettes are wonderful but not so wonderful they can't be improved. Here I have an assortment of goodies from Mid-America motor works to make the C-5
a more enjoyable car. First is the Vera ram induction system picks up cold air from down here and actually has a ram air effect at higher speeds that can add significantly to the horsepower of the C-5. And one thing that you may be confused about you'll see ads that say you want to swirl the air that goes into the engine Well that's not true at all. Even things like the stock bellows on here can disturb the air flow as it goes into the engine and that reduces performance. What you want is clean smooth air going in and this air coupler will do that because there are no wrinkles no bellows nothing like that. It will actually improve performance. And speaking of performance spark plug wires are always an issue. And here we have cool socks there are a fiberglass sleeve that fits over the end of the spark plug wire. They're designed specifically for Corvettes but they'll work on any car and they keep the
heat away from the spark plug wire to make the wire last a lot longer. Now there's a safety issue was the 5S and that's the steering column lock. Here we have a column lock bypass. And what this is going to do is to prevent the steering column for more locking when you don't want it to or unlocking when you don't want it to. Cars have been recalled but they don't always work with the recall so good idea right here. Also if you have a six speed. Well the computer in the car determines when it wants to shift your manual transmission so it has one to four skip shift. Well this is a skip shift eliminator to put the control back in your hands. Easy inexpensive and if you have a C-5 or a C 6 Be careful about jacking it up. It requires a special adapter actually a set of four of them every time it goes up on the lift. So you or the repair shop must have these.
What this does is fix up into holes in the frame of the vehicle. It extends down below the plastic. So there isn't any damage to the body of your Corvette. And here's a neat tool. This is from Eastwood and it has nothing to do with Corvettes but it is a pinch weld adapter. It goes into your jack and it goes around the pinch weld so you can raise the car up without denting anything in the rocker panel area. Very nice. And if you have a C-5 will give you a glass top you know how hot it gets on hot days well heres a film that can be placed on the inside of your glass top and significantly reduces the temperature inside the car. Pretty clever and if you have a question or comment write to me the address is Motor Week Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. Every new set of wheels that's got a hammy is guaranteed to be a hot
performer. But the engineers at Chrysler believe that there are many more uses for their most famous B.A. than just powering muscle cars and trucks and as Henry Copas has found some folks are finding homes for him. They stretch the imagination to the limit. The Chrysler Hemi engine capable 345 horsepower in three hundred ninety four. Perfect pairing pickups sedans and children's carousels when it comes to a Hemi engine. What do you usually think about. For me it's power performance and speed. For some people though it's snowblower carousel and paper shredder. And luckily enough for them Chrysler thought the same thing. In what has to be one of the coolest ideas ever to tug at the heartstrings if you're headed on it. Enthusiasm price with groups. What can you have a contest. Asked participants. What can you power with a 5.7 liter V-8 Hemi engine no holds barred and no idea is too crazy. And with that car nuts from all over the United
States and Canada mailed their ideas in. Oh yeah I forgot the best part. The winner of the contest got to choose any hemi powered Chrysler Jeep or Dodge vehicle of their choice. Yeah I know. Awesome. The contest five finalists along with the press minute timer Chryslers Chelsea proving grounds for the unveiling of their contraptions and the overall winner yet Chrysler took their ideas and built a life size function versions down to every last nut bolt and muffler. And judging from the reaction of those in attendance all five finalists ideas could have been winners. Take the hemi powered paper shredder for instance. This unassuming desk holds its surprise under its countertop able to annihilate CDs paver or a whole phone book. This desk is ready for some hard core number crunching. Literally. How about the Hemi go round. We're heavy on ice all sport serious power in an attitude that's ready to kick some well one into here let's say Frank liegen Daimler-Chrysler vice president of product development. Give me a
bit of background info as to how all of this came about. Well certainly the Hemi brand in itself has been fantastic we continue to hear it all whether it's walking your hammy or does Africa have a have a it's just been a great a great tool for us and a great performing product. So with that we look at these things as just another extension bit over 360 respond as to the content of the what the customer had to do is basically give us a step give us a little bit of their idea. That's all they had to do is send it to us. And how exactly did contest participants come up with their ideas. Well for finalist Tim fluke coming up with a workable design was easier than you may think. Fall of that design was pretty easy I looked out the window and it was snowing again. Living in Michigan we had one of the worst winters on record for snowfall and when I saw the Contessa looked out the window I thought I'm so tired of shoveling. So naturally I thought if we could put a hammie onto a snow blower the job would go a lot quicker.
Each idea in its full sized V8 mumbling realization was a sight for everyone in attendance but only one person could win of course and that's super lucky guy was Marcus pawn. I think Cooper British Columbia. You probably want to know how his award winning idea came about. Simple he just was like a kid. Basically the idea came from my childhood. We used to have them and there was about three or four of us on the street you know a bit of a gang or inner trikes and I thought if anything could be improved by putting any it'd be a great great idea to put it into a trike and I'm not at all 66 valiant in the garage so I think that a crisis where this is just icing on the cake with a four foot tall front wheel 18 by 10 and a half inch Goodyear racing slicks out back and a rear mounted Hemi engine Marcus's trike is ready to roll down the street in spine for safety. The driver sits in a racing seat a Christmas five point racing harness and for sound the Emmy's exhaust exits the engine via custom Borlaug saw system.
Now I wouldn't expect to see these Hemi products in dealerships any time soon. But hey pressure built these. And that means if they want they can build more. So the next time you see someone snow blowing their drive way go and ask him zapping got a hammy because it just might. Our long term 2005 Toyota Tacoma double cab or by Ford B6 is proving to be a near perfect mid-sized personal use pickup ideal for weekend work or play. After six months in some 11000 miles our trucks two hundred forty five horsepower four leader V-6 is strong and quiet. Plus you can tell up to sixty five hundred pounds of trailer. And with rising gas prices a capable pick up that manages and also rising eighteen point three miles per gallon is welcome. Other than the leaking windshield we reported on earlier there have been no faults or miscues with the Tacoma.
One of the aspects of the new Tacoma we really like is the all composite bed. It's lighter than a steel bed and you never have to worry about rust again. Both five and six foot cargo boxes are offered with our trucks longer beds. More than adequate for most household loads. Indeed with the Tacoma you're always looking forward to the weekend. This diminutive Suki Reno 8 x 5 door has been in our garage for 10 months and so far it's been driven over 11000 mostly commuter Miles. This day will build Korean made import is well-made smartly styled comfortable and surprisingly roomy. It also has above average ride and handling and brakes are all this in the past we have carped about fuel economy and still do since it has averaged only twenty three point two miles per gallon so far. Still Stop and Go Traffic is what this agile little 126 horsepower car lives for and it otherwise handles it quite well. Indeed the high points for the Reno are mini The seats are comfortable with lots of adjustment.
The CD in P3 stereo sounds great. Plus even with an automatic it makes commuting almost enjoyable and the Reno has been trouble free will be free with our comments on this Mitsubishi Eclipse and this turbo diesel Jeep Liberty on the next motor week long term road test update. Now it's just like a taxi has forced this week's Motor News. When we left the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show we knew we'd be back to bring you more from the newest potential major player on the automotive scene. China for the first time at a major western automotive show multiple Chinese carmakers were showing their wares trying to impress that they know how to respond to market forces and quickly. Among the three Chinese brands to show themselves the Frankfurt regime really land win and brilliance Gili the young gun of the bunch had five models on display. The free cruiser or seek a sedan the mid-size FC sedan the luxury maple Marinda the five door halting or HQ and the China dragon or seedy sports coupe
language was the only Chinese brand with a vehicle already on sale in Europe. This Isuzu Rodeo like SUV is available in Holland Belgium Germany and soon Great Britain. And finally brilliance. They too exhibited just a single model a large sedan Tang jumpoff. So while no Chinese car maker has yet produced a viable contender for the US market one that can prove to withstand the quality and safety standards required. It may not be long before they're eligible to compete but the Chinese brand that most likely will come to the U.S. first was not even at Frankfurt Cherry China's most prominent automaker has big plans to bring vehicles to the states through. Entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin he was the brainchild behind Subaru in America and the infamous Yugo was well Chery through Brooklyn's visionary vehicles expects to eventually sell 2 million cars annually here. The company plans to offer five models ranging from a compact sedan to an SUV starting in 2007 when Chinese vehicles do make it stateside
expect low prices and generous warranties to convince consumers to give them a try. And rest assured both domestic and import brands will be watching closely. And that's it for this week's Motor News. Let's talk about luxury SUV for a minute. Specifically the super premium off roaders from Landrover. The 2005 Land Rover began a complete overhaul of its model range with the all new LR 3 replacing the discovery now for 2006. Its range rovers turn with two higher output deviates and the new Range Rover Sport. Big changes for Englands ultimate SUV. Indeed. Whether you opt for the standard pedigree or the new sport hound the expanded 2006 Land Rover Range Rover pack is clearly an all road warrior aimed at a younger more aggressive buyer and created from the same unit body architecture
is the LR 3. The 2006 Land Rover Range Rover Sport wears familiar slab sided styling but with a more aggressive facia and the sporting Fastback group of the original Range Rover its sporting nature is also evident by a tighter link than shortened 108 inch wheelbase down over five inches from the LR three and traditional Range Rover power pours from either of two Jaguar based be eight of four point four leader 32 valve or with 300 horsepower at 315 pound feet of torque for the HSC. For our test super charged four point two liter 32 valve be eight with three hundred ninety horsepower and 410 pound feet of torque. Each is linked to a news six speed automatic with manual mode and full time to speed four wheel drive with locking center differential on the track. The sport energetically ran a 0 to 60 in 6.9 seconds and a quarter mile of fifteen point three seconds at 92 mph. Exhilaration has more
bottom in punch than previous rover on the squiggly the sport is the best handling rover we've ever tested. Feeling far more car like than SUV the sports fully independent suspension uses double wishbones with electronically controlled air springs an automatic load leveling. Plus our testers new dynamic response system that counteracts body roll boosted both handling and ride comfort over the LR 3 to stop our super charge sport is an all disc ABS system with four piston Brembo front caliper stops averaged the longest one hundred forty five feet but more stable as a slab of granite. Pact with technology the sporting clues the LR threes to rain response system which ties all of the sports traction aids together into a single control aiming for maximum grip in any condition. This system offers five different terrain settings from general on road driving to slippery conditions like snow and gravel to three for off road conditions
inside the sport the traditional Range Rover posh also takes a sporty or style and ample mid size 5 seat cabin features a tall console nicely contoured seats and all the usual Toppin Range Rover comfort. Six airbags include side curtains for both rows of seats. EPA estimates for the super charge support call for a 13 city and 18 highway. Our test results were at the low end of 13 miles per gallon. They're actually aspirated HSC is about 10 percent better complementing the new sport as the revised 2006 Land Rover Range Rover. Gone are the BMW obviates replaced with the same Jaguar power as the sport but being the top level range rover power ratings are slightly higher than the sport. The standard four point four leader is rated at 305 horsepower and three hundred twenty five pound feet of torque while the super charge for Point 2 liter delivers an even 400 horsepower and four hundred twenty pound feet of torque.
That makes the Range Rover the most powerful land rover ever. At the track the heavier super George Rover sprinted from zero to 60 in seven seconds and threw the quarter mile and fifteen point four seconds at 94 mph. There was a little stumble off the line but at 2000 rpm it took off like a rocket ship from the six speed automatic gearbox were smooth and crisp and both manual and automatic moves since it lacks the sports anti-roll system the Range Rover does have more lean in corners and less feel through the steering. Still the ride on road and off is very comfortable. Stopping our super charge tester were all dis brakes with bows up front here distances were much better at 125 feet from sixty two thousand six exterior changes to the Range Rover are minimal but noteworthy. The standard model gets a new grill revised power vents a redesigned front bumper new headlights taillights and 19 inch alloy wheels super charge models don a mesh design grille power vents black on silver badges and
20 inch alloys. So which will you choose to ride the range in the big Rover at seventy four thousand nine hundred fifty dollars for the HSC model. Super Charge it and dole out eighty nine thousand nine hundred fifty dollars. The sharper Range Rover Sport HSC goes for fifty six thousand seven hundred fifty dollars and if you have any left to spare. The super charged sport is sixty nine thousand seven hundred fifty dollars. So whether you're cruising on road or off. 2006 brings two distinct Range Rover breeds that allow you to go anywhere you please with man's best friend along for the ride. Well I hope you'll join us next week for more motorways. When will test the smallest Hummer yet the new H3 and the Fast and Furious Lexus. I ask 350 sports sedan. I'm John David.
