Dotcom your host for Motor Week John Davis. Hello and welcome again to motor week. We're glad to have you with us. After years of trying to build a top notch luxury sports sedan Cadillac scored a breakthrough with the 2003 safety yes but not only did they see it as proof they Cadillac could
build a drivers car and sell it in volume. It proved that the venerable American brand could hold its own against global stalwarts. BMW and Mercedes. But time and great car design march quickly on and an all new ctx is ready. So let's roll. Taking on a European luxury brands is always daunting. As Cadillac knows from experience. And the second generation 2008 ctx is the most potent weapon Yeading Catty's quest for luxury sports sedan stardom underpinning the new CPS is an upgraded version of GM's rear drive Sigma platform. It mixes elements of both the first seat and larger s.c.s to produce a chassis boasting improved stiffness while maintaining nearly 50/50 weight distribution the wheelbase is the same one hundred thirteen point four inches as before but track has been widened by two inches which shows the more muscular
styling and stance while the front end wears a far more expressive grille that favors the Cadilac 16 concept but it's what hides under the sharp body angles that really makes this CTX thrive. There lies a pair of 3.6 liter variable valve timing V-6 is the base motor is a carry over with 263 horsepower and 253 pound feet of torque. It's topped by a new direct injection version that cranks out 300 for horsepower and 273 pound feet of torque. Both sixes pair with six speed transmissions and electronically controlled automatic for most folks and a real manual for the enthusiastic both rear and all wheel drive are available but the most aggressive suspension is rear drive only and there are three versions of a lightweight aluminum intensive short long arm front and multilane rear suspension available. The soft This is designated as the one which delivers a more traditional Cadilac rye epi 2 is
significantly sportier with a solid ride with comfort that we expect and world class sport sedans. The most aggressive F.E. 3 set up is the stiffest we've ever experienced in Acadie and transmits every bump and dribble back to the driver but also delivers ultra sharp handling that rivals. BMW used best with Ephie three CCS is extremely quick reacting and deterrence turns the chassis exhibits virtually no push and the standard stability controls competitive setting seamlessly pulls the car back into line after a sloppy quarter entry. Both V-6 is make their best power high in the Rabanne. So you do have to keep them spinning for a strong quarter exit. Do this and they deliver with plenty of smooth thrusts especially the direct injection version but out in the real world of a regular pavement even with self-leveling rear shocks the E-3 proved to be almost too harsh. So we would opt for the more compliant Bilstein equipped to set up which
still handles very well but was also a great deal more comfortable and comfort will always be an important part of the Cadilac equation. But instead of the somewhat sterile plasticky look of the previous seats this 2008 model has a cabin that's trimmed and tasteful understated luxury. Serious analog gauges and close set motorcycle like Pod's reside under a low glare free hood. The dash has been completely revamped with a dramatically flared stack that no longer reminds us of a personal computer tower available systems include a pop up navigation system with an eight inch screen and 3D imaging plus audio options that include Bose 5.1 surround sound. A 40 gig hard drive that allows you to rewind live radio and of course USV and auxilary ports for your MP 3 player. But despite a feeling of spaciousness the rear seat ends up with an inch less leg room but a hair more headroom and the trunk also grows a bit to thirteen point six cubic feet. Prices
have also grown slightly to a base of thirty two thousand nine hundred ninety dollars for a manual transmission CTX and thirty five thousand two hundred ninety dollars with the automatic. Those are very competitive prices to go with a car that is a genuine U.S. design competitor for Europe's most popular luxury sports sedan. The 2008 Cadillac ctx is the culmination of an immense effort by designers and engineers to build a Cadillac that can share the most demanding roads of the world while giving rivals a real reason to watch their rearview mirror. Coming up the court in court whether it's vintage new fangled are just plain washed up. We've got the guy that knows cars best are friendly Mr. Fix it. Pat Goss John whether it's 60 horsepower or 600 horsepower the
lifeblood of every engine is its oil. And joining us to talk about oils Mr. Tom Smith. Tom you are an oil chemistry's right now in that capacity. What do you do. What I do is I formulate the oils for your engines and your transmissions I select the appropriate base oils and additive systems to give you the proper performance in your vehicle. So oils today are engineer and they're now just pumped out of the ground and into the engine. Definitely not there's a lot that goes into making an oil. You start with basophils and that's the part that comes out of the ground or maybe synthesize and you take the crude oil out of the ground you have to go through several series of processes to get a base fluid that's adequate to meet the needs of an engine. But even that isn't isn't what everything that your engine needs you've got to put antioxidants in it detergents and dispersants. Andy where agents friction modifier is a whole array of different components to give you the performance that's needed in a modern engine today.
So it's a real cocktail of different. It's a real cocktail and it's the balance of those ingredients it is very important. Now one of the things that I get a lot of questions on people say why I took my car in for an oil change and my manual says that it should have five W 20. The technician told me I should use 15 40 or something like that. Now you should use what the owner's manual recommends. The engines have been designed to run on the viscosity that's recommended in your owner's manual. If you to heavier and oil in the vehicle you're not going to get the the horsepower or the fuel efficiency out of it. And if you use too light of an oil you could not. You may not get the protection you need. OK so always use the viscosity. The manufacturer recommends. Yes. What about oil qualities and types. Well there are several different types of oils out in the marketplace. You have conventional That's for the standard motorist's. Then you have a semi-synthetic to give a little more protection. You have a full synthetic to give the ultimate protection and you also have specialty oils like high mileage oils for
engines with high mileage. These are formulated with additional components such as such as Seal conditioners because seals can shrink can become brittle and extra handy where agents things said an older engine will need OK oil filter. Always change it. Always change the oil filter the oil filters collecting a lot of the contaminants that come from combustion and you've got to get those out of there. OK. And quality is important don't look for the cheapest price that goes for everything you didn't do that when you bought your car don't do it when you buy your oil or filter. Tom thank you so much. And if you have a question or comment write to me the address is Motor Week Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7 while many import brands now build vehicles in North America a lot of their cars in SUV still must endure a long sea cruise. But what happens to these true imports between ship and dealership. They don't just take on gas and go to find out r f y i reporter Yolanda Vaska truck to the
Port of Baltimore one of America's busiest entry points for imported cars to check out the port in and port the port of Baltimore is a waterfront workhorse no matter what time of day this hectic Harbor is teeming with activity. Huge cranes that seem to tower endlessly in the air and load and unload containers filled with precious cargo. Some even carry items you'd never expect to see inside. Baltimore has always done very well with automobiles. Executive Director James White says a few years ago the port developed a strategic plan to aggressively grow their automotive business. We figured if we could produce choices for the car manufacturers both import and export where they could chop their ocean freight rates we'd be creating a very competitive field for whites theory has proven successful. Baltimore is one of the top five auto ports in the nation. Number two in the country for auto exports Chrysler is doing very well this
year. In the past they were doing in a neighborhood of 60 to 80000 cars. This year we're expecting 200000 cars in export which is a real boom for us. The port has close to 500 acres in various terminals dedicated to automobiles. This aerial view shows a sea of cars parked at their Dundalk marine terminal. We handle just about every manufacturer of lotas Porsche Mercedes Jaguar Valvo Ford Chrysler you know the list is as long as you're on the port of Baltimore handles over 500000 vehicles and most of them come in on huge vessels like the one behind me. Now they take a ship several weeks to get here but once it arrives the unloading process happens rather quickly one by one. Each car rolls down the ramp in a rhythmic routine. More than 20 longshoremen drive the Porsche vehicles to a designated spot in a nearby parking lot. It takes less than three hours to unload 300 vehicles. These workers
won't spend nearly as much time unloading this container filled with five Lotus vehicles. Each car is held in place with tie down straps that wrap around the tires and connect to the deck of the container. The handlers wear white uniforms so as not to scratch the vehicles as they move around in cramped quarters a very tight space except to use extreme caution to prevent damage so there is a quick battery hook up in these sporty British imports are ready to be inspected. Workers checked the undercarriage for damage tires for any scuffs or scratches paint for any next day. We're looking for any imperfection in the vehicle any damages that may have been caused in transit or any anything that's wrong with the vehicle that that could have been caused somewhere else. After a full inspection the vehicles are driven over to pay the automotive service is a brand new facility designed to process high end vehicles everything from a mirror installation to an air conditioning installation to turbocharger installations et cetera et cetera.
Vice President Earl Hansen says the auto processor is also equipped to handle paint and body work repairing minor scratches dings or dents an important step in preparing notice vehicles for distribution involves placing a protective plastic covering over the nose of the car and around the wheel opening. So any stones that fly up and hit the car won't cause a stone bruise to the paint. Hansen who's been in the automotive processing business for 35 years says most people have no idea how much prep work it takes to get vehicles ready for sale. There's a lot of things that happened that's behind the scenes before they buy that pretty little red car on the showroom floor. And the folks at the border of Baltimore more than happy to make sure each car is showroom ready before it's delivered to a local dealership near you. Next up on corner Crosby with all the latest gear. So do you like my BMW watch. Well ladies wearing this
stylish gear not only makes a fashion statement it also brings attention to a very worthy cause. The pink ribbon has become the global symbol for breast cancer awareness. Many companies now offer a variety of products to choose from. But BMW s collection is one of the most notable. The merchandise is feminine functional and the best part about it. 80 percent of the proceeds goes to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness foundation. Choose from this 50 dollar watch or this roomy type for 20 eighths. There are also hats and polo shirts so you can show your support and look sporty doing it. So there you have it pink ribbon road here that show us how fashion and compassion never go out of style. We're always spinning our key rings for new upstart. So let's see what's tempting this week the crossover utility segment shows no signs of slowing. And the latest edition is the
2008 Nissan Rogue intended to counter Honda's popular CRV. This all new compact utility chairs its seat platform chassis with the latest center sedan. The rogue is boxy air with more utilitarian styling than the slightly larger and much sleeker Nissan Murano crossover road power comes from the center's 2.5 leader for one hundred seventy horsepower with a standard continuously variable automatic transmission is available in both front and all wheel drive with maximum traction provided by Nissan's new intuitive all wheel drive system with your moment. The is simple and clean but also with a look that's more Sadanand utility and with plenty of practical features. These include an available fold flat front passenger seat and detachable one full flat cargo organizer. The rogue is a great vehicle.
It's the perfect size for a small family. It's great on long trips and never gets uncomfortable and it makes the roughest roads feel smooth. The rogue in Nissan showrooms now with prices starting at around $20000. Quite a way up the price scale is a new sunshine machine from Rolls Royce is the 2008 phantom drop dead. And as its name implies it's a modern take on the classic rolls convertible. This open air jewel shares its basic architecture and all aluminum spaceplane with a phantom heart top that preceded it but all body panels from their signature brushed stainless steel bonnet to the picnic boot trunk are unique to the drop head as are the very vintage front swinging doors with modern electric power assisted clothes 453 horsepower 6.8 leader V12 pushes it to performance levels that company founders Charles Rolls and Henry Royce could never have dreamed of. Of course opulence has always been part of the Rolls brand and the drop head delivers with everything from
lavish amounts of fine leather to available teakwood rear decking Plus modern amenities like a powerful 15 speaker audio system hideaway navigation screen and video camera at both ends to assist in parking or just seeing oncoming traffic. Even the power convertible top is top of the line with a cashmere lining and five layers of sound insulation. All for a mere $400000. So sell the house the car and the dog and you can have a Rolls-Royce Phantom drop head to ultra luxury supercars may be incredibly expensive but there seems to be no shortage of ultra rich people willing to buy them and the 2008 Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren roadster certainly makes us understand why it's a drop top version of the super exclusive coupe built by formula one constructor McLaren that has wowed auto enthusiasts since its 2005 introduction and roadster form the coupe sleek carbon
fix top is replaced by an advanced folding fabric that's ready for speeds of almost 190 miles per hour speed easily attained thanks to the LR six hundred seventeen horsepower supercharged V8 engine and five speed AMG speed shift transmission of Formula One were the carbon fiber monocoque chassis. That is one of the most advanced platforms in road car history and advanced aerodynamic tools that include a front splitter and six channel rear diffuser. But we would expect no less from a Mercedes-Benz super car that cost almost a half million dollars. Too rich for your blood. Ours too but we can dream and next time it's back to reality. With a few sets of more affordable car keys while turbo diesel SUV are common in Europe they're very scarce here. Aside from Volkswagen and Mercedes only Jeep has ventured to market them. Their first effort. The 2005 liberty they quickly sold out.
Well now Chapter 2 in the jeep diesel story is unfolding with the 2007 Grand Cherokee C R D. While the badge says J. The engine is all Mercedes and the result is a marriage made for the mud. The challenge is to get Americans to view diesel power in the same way Europeans do here in the States. Diesels are still fighting a 1980 stigma of being noisy dirty and unreliable but near premium vehicles like this full sized Jeep Grand Cherokee just might start convincing the American masses of the virtues of the modern clean diesel denotes the common rail turbo diesel engine supplied by Mercedes Benz three liter double overhead cam turbocharge V-6 generates 215 horsepower and an asphalt grinding 376 pound feet of torque from sixteen hundred twenty eight hundred RPM. This underpins Cherokee's monumental towing
capacity of seventy four hundred pounds this V-6 turbo diesels common rail injection system uses newly developed Zeo injectors the clean diesel technology requiring ultra low sulfur fuel produces 20 percent less CO2 emissions than comparable gas engines. The CRT is currently 45 state legal. It also runs more efficiently to the tune of 30 percent with government fuel economy ratings of 18 city and 23 highway. Our Cherokee Limited CRT four by two should return 20 miles per gallon in everyday driving. A Grand Cherokee with a gas fueled Hemi might do 15 Grand Cherokee. Power is channeled through a high speed automatic with manual shift mode. The top four by four package his jeeps drive to system uniting a full time to speed transfer case with available electronic limited slip differentials for extreme trail riding capabilities in Overland tram tow hooks and skid plates are also stator. But this
diesel is very much at home on the pavement to see Ardie surge from zero to 60 in eight seconds flat. That's only a second off the gas 5.7 leader Hemmy the quarter mile was covered in sixteen point two seconds at eighty four miles per hour. The CRT proved nicely quick off the line and down the stretch as well as impressively quiet and smooth handling as defined by an independent front and a five linked solid axle rear suspension for on road comfort and Off-Road maneuverability stability control comes standard. The Grand Cherokee felt light and well balanced and not top heavy at all. The chassis is very solid and well planted despite body roll. The torquey nose of the diesel makes it possible to induce some oversteer but that's not the vehicle's natural tendency for wheel disc with ABS and brake assist gave us an acceptable average stopping distance of 132 feet from 60 to zero from the outside. The Grand Cherokee
exudes classic Jeep styling its profile is all too familiar adorned with roof rack rails and standard 17 inch aluminum wheels up front of course is Jeep's 7 slot grille flanked by smart beam auto dimming headlamps for impressive features lie within the handsome Grand Cherokee Kabanov Wooding chrome trim limited CRT trim comes loaded with standards such as power leather seats with heat and memory of Boston Acoustic sound system with six this CD P3 capability control by steering wheel mounted audio controls dual zone automatic climate control and six airbags with roll detection backup camera Parks's and navigation are standard on the top level overland. Round the rear seat is comfortable if a little short on leg room while offering a 60:40 split fold and total cargo volume is small for its class at sixty seven point four cubic feet. While our test CRT was a
2007 model 2008 pricing reduces the cost of the CRT option to sixteen hundred fifty five dollars and less base. MSR P now ranges from thirty eight thousand three hundred fifteen dollars for a limited four by two to forty five thousand one hundred forty five dollars for the Overland four by four. The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRV makes a solid case for both itself and clean diesel technology as a whole. Especially in a big SUV we have so many pluses and virtually no drawbacks. It may be the best shot yet for diesel to grab America's attention once and for all. Well I hope you'll join us next week for more on motorway. Well we'll take Ford's new ball for a ring around the track. The Torah says back then we'll drive up here. Train the Mercedes Benz see OK 63 I am Jay Black sorry I am John Davis.
