Next on motorway Toyoda's striking new Stilicho and America's awesome Hummer Plus do it yourselfers dream come drive with us next. Week TV's automotives magazine. Your host formular John Davis. Hello and welcome again Motor Week. We're glad to have you with us. You know launching a new sport coupe is never easy. So if you want your car to be successful you'd better give the buying public something different. When Toyota introduced this Selek up or 1990 the cars radically rounded styling turned a lot of heads bowed. With today's intense competition in the sport coupe
arena it will take a lot more than looks to make the new 94 Celica succeed. Works may not be everything but that didn't stop the designers of the new Toyota Celica from producing a striking automobile. Whether it's an notch back or hatchback form the look is leaner and crisper than that of the previous generation so like up the Zelic line is also leaner having been trimmed down to front drive Esty and G.T. models only with a convertible to be introduced later. An all new set like a whole track will not be sold here long sloping hood DeBerry intake and distinctive headlights. Recall the siliceous upscaled cousins the Toyota Supra as well as the Lexus decreases in the side panels and the smooth with just a bit more bold rear quarters. Get the latest Celica a more continental appearance than that of its very Asian looking predecessor. Of course all this new show would mean nothing without more go. So Toyota has increased the base grade horse cylinder's displacement from 1.6 to 1.8 litres
bumps horsepower up to 110 and torque to £115 feet. Over in the G.T. displacement stays at 2.2 leaders and horsepower at 135. But torque jumps up to £145 feet. Overall weight drops. Unfortunately last year's 200 horse turbo 2.2 went the way of the old track still Toyota claims that zero to 60 times now stand at eight point seven seconds with a GTI and 10 seconds flat for the esty. In addition EPA fuel economy ratings improved to 27 city and 34 highway for a manual transmission Esty 23 city and 29 highway for a manual G.G.. Toyota also claims substantial improvements in handling thanks to a wider track revised suspension geometry. New power steering and a more rigid body structure. Our press preview drive along twisting California roads in G.T. hatchback confirms some improvement but we'll have to wait for a proper track test to determine how much.
Optionals sports suspension package is also available for Jiechi buyers in place of the discontinued GTX model. We already know the Celica is quieter. The suspension is now attached to the body by a series of frames and additional sound insulation has been added. Unwanted vibrations are also reduced at the new steering gear actually increases the road Bill. For increased safety. Anti-lock brakes are now optional for both Model S t come standard with a drum combination although G.T. sports four wheel. While the drivers wheel and passenger side dash. Now sport Life-Saving airbags is standard equipment. The cockpit that they inhabit follows the exteriors crisper is better approach where the more driver oriented shape also akin to the Supra. While we had few complaints about the last set a dash we applaud the new ones most straightforward approach and the addition of new double locking seat belts to improve safety and allow easier installation of child safety seats. But a few more of these large analog gauges
would always be appreciated in a sporty coupe. We do appreciate a cup holder however and the smooth operation of the optional power tilt and slide moonroof. The controls of the latest top line system made stereo our typical Toyota. It's hard to ever find anything wrong with them and the air conditioning now works without ozone depleting CFC. As with any car in this class rear seat room remains tight rodolpho passenger trunk space and lift back models increases by almost 3 cubic feet. Trunks are on chasid ten point sixty cubic feet. Price increases are almost inevitable with new models and the Celica is no exception. SD models now started sixteen thousand one hundred sixty eight dollars while GTA began at eighteen thousand four hundred twenty eight dollars. Base prices top out at nineteen thousand six hundred ninety eight dollars for an automatic equipped GTI hatchback. Toyota planned the new Celica to please the car's most loyal customer. Young predominantly female buyers. Thus the careful refinements of engine suspension and styling
but we think that the 94 Toyota Celica is capable of reaching well beyond the established core audience. It is clearly a more striking car to see and be seen in it is also a far more enjoyable car to drive as well. When victorious American troops arrived home from the Persian Gulf War they brought with them many heroes. One was the rugged multi-purpose vehicle known as The Hammer but I wondered if the civilian version was as tough as this military counterpart. So we headed to the mountains to find out. The Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to be precise. There we met the folks from A.M. general who built the Hummer for an eye opening trip through the area's rugged trails. We joined up with members of the Great Lakes four wheel drive Association who are as curious
as we were about the Hummer's true capabilities. We've driven the Hummer before but never through areas this remote. Some of our skepticism was put to rest by a quick look at the spec sheet which showed the aluminum bodied Hummer to be mechanically identical to its famous will do. So customers willing to part with the hummers new lower thirty nine thousand five hundred dollar based price need not fear about being short changed in the parts department or the performance department. Our first trip up a steep grade Illustrated hundred 250 pound feet of torque from a general motors a diesel and full time all wheel drive may not excite most hardcore off roaders but add in unique Kummer features like the optional Goodyear run flat tires and central tire inflation system which allows the driver to adjust tire pressures for changing conditions or unusual torque biasing differential with inboard mounted disc brakes and your soon leaving conventional war by fours bar behind or pulling them out of trouble. We had to do with some club members but they tried to follow the Hummer's tire tracks.
A Hummer can avoid this trouble by lightly applying both brake and throttle locking the differentials and redistributing power equally to all four wheels. Consider the hummers 16 inches of ground clearance. Drive over obstacles that many off roaders must go around. But despite the hummers tremendous ability to crawl over rough terrain. It also has the fast off road ride this side of range rover on road driving can be a bit less civilized due to the vehicles lack of noise insulation light and handling are on par with that of a full sized Ford pickup with oversized all terrain tires and tear your comfort is improved over that of the military version. Thanks to proper padded seats and an optional air conditioning system that's literally powerful enough to cool many houses. But don't expect the plumpness of some upscale four by fours. This is a very purposeful environment. Civilians also get additional safety features such as three point seat belts and steel
doors. Side impact means place of military canvas but the features that allow it to storm on is needed across the world's toughest battlefields are what make the Hummer special and the Hummer that you can buy has them all. Time now for our weekly visit with Pat Goss. If you've got a question. He's the one to ask this time John. I have a letter from coach's Cortez of Panola Georgia. He writes I own a 1992 Toyota Paseo coupe with an automatic transmission. I am considering having a converted to dual exhaust and wonder if there will be any problems. Well to help me explain whether or not there will be any problems I have Mr. Dave called him. He's of the office of mobile sources from the United States Environmental Protection Agency better known to us as the EPA. Dave welcome to motorway. Thank you Mr. Cortez going to have a problem here. Likely he is going to have a problem with any any change in the original
configuration to the exhaust system is likely to cause changes in the emissions and therefore it's illegal to change the configuration from the original configuration that was used by the manufacturer to certify the car. How would an individual go about knowing whether or not there are different certified configurations. The best way to do that is to talk to the dealer. He can also call the manufacturer especially if the vehicle is very old or there. There are lots of manuals that would show you what the original certified configuration is. Now there might be some cars that were certified for both single and dual exhaust. That's a possibility. I would be unusual but it is a possibility. Are there any modifications that are legal modifications that are done behind the catalytic converter. Would typically be OK or in the case of dual catalytic converters after the pipes come together. OK so basically we're looking at things that have any effect on the catalytic converter forward
that those are forbidden. That's basically correct yes. All right. Now on some of these kits and various things are they actually certified. Does EPA certify things. Typically a manufacturer of a part an aftermarket part understands the law in regards to part it can't have an adverse effect on emissions. There is not necessarily an EPA certification per se but the rule of thumb here I think is to buy or parts from a reputable manufacturer and a reputable dealer. OK. So we have to look for reputable. This applies primarily to things like replacement catalytic converters and front pipes and that sort of thing. Correct. That's right as well as any engine parts that have an effect on emissions. I see. Do you have any quick closing comments. Yeah I'd just like to tell everyone that we're all really liable and responsible for the emissions that come out of our vehicles and therefore it's our
responsibility to make sure that any changes that we make to the vehicle are in fact legal. And as the vehicle was when it was certified. Dave thank you very much. And if you have a question about your car whether it deals with law or anything else write to me if I use your letter on the air I'll send you a motor week T-shirt. The address is Motor Week. Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. Is. Uniquely aerodynamic car of the week is an incredibly rare 1949 Davis three wheeler. It belongs to Ken and Eileen moss off of Denver Colorado. It's a good color photos of your car of the week candidate to motor week. Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. We drive a lot of new cars in this job and one of the most intriguing new midsize sedans available today is the latest Mitsubishi galon. Now we did our preliminary testing of the 94 galat last summer but now we've had a chance to firm up our
impression. And they're even more positive today. Thousands of added miles driving the 94 galon as they were when we first got our hands on Mitsubishi's new entry into the highly competitive midsize sedan market the bresh galon styling certainly is mainstream. Not straying far from the smooth pattern set by monster 5:54 I continued on Honda's latest a short but the Golan shape is the most aerodynamic producing a very low point 2:9 coefficient of drag which helps galon to achieve healthy EPA fuel economy rating. Our test with advice speed is pegged 22 city and 29 highway. We managed to find 27 on our very mixed driving loop. The G-S is powered by a dual overhead cam version of Mitsubishi's 2.4 leader 16 valve 4 cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 160 pounds of torque.
Since our initial galon testing we've been able to improve the G-S by speed 0 to 60 time to a very quick 7.8 seconds with a quarter mile time of sixteen point one seconds ending at 87 miles per hour. S s n ls gray go on to get this single overhead cam version of the same 2.4 leader 16 valve engine. Delivers 141 horsepower and one hundred forty eight pound feet of torque. GM cars have this standard on all four wheels. While other GLONASS get by with rear drums all but the base Escalades can be equipped with optional antilock brakes. Mitsubishi didn't neglect the new Glocks interior either where practically every dimension was increased and there there's an airbag for the driver as well as for the front passenger. The firm cloth bucket seats provide excellent support and include front and rear tilt tilt wheel is also standard. We applaud the higher location for the heating and air conditioning system. We particularly like the simplicity of the ventilation controls. Besides increased headroom the rear seat now features a center armrest and on on all but the
base car the entire back seat folds down easily which combined with the twelve point five cubic feet of trunk space makes the new go on a very practical family hauler. Besides the galat Mitsubishi has made significant improvements to others of its 94 model lineup including the hot 3000 GTI sport coupe aggressive aero headlamps replace last year's retractable units on a lowered hood line body size styling also has rounder with revised lower body air ducts inside are dual airbags and on the VR for a six speed transmission changes to the Montero are mostly on the inside. New features include a driver's airbag a first for an imported sport utility power windows and door locks side mirrors and cruise control plus seating for seven instead of five. Now all standard no new dual overhead can 215 horsepower 3.5 leader V-6 comes on the top of the line Montero S.R. Mitsubishi Motors sales of America likes to call itself an American car company with a Japanese
name because of its UAW assembly plant in Normal Illinois. All galon sold in the U.S. are now built regardless of definitions it is clear. The impressive galat and other models are being increasingly refined for American taste. In fact that makes Mitsubishi's future here right. Next up is another report from our information specialist Lisa Barrow. She has all the latest motor news since the recent takeover by Mugari many enthusiasts have been wondering what the future holds for British sports car maker Lotus. Well now we have some answers. At the recent Lotus dealer Atlanta derangements return to their first look at the newest Prius for. Group Lotus managing director Adrian Palmer outlined the effects of the Mugari relationship and spoke with the company's future plans. Lotus will reissue 800 lines to use up leftover inventory of engines and cards for all to see. Since. 1992. A new less expensive a longtime roadster should be on the road in a
year or two. Look for a Lotus design to appear in the spring by 1996. That engine should also power on the front engine drive too close to Dualla in 1997. Those officials are thrilled about the new relationship with Mugari. It seems they now stand on firm ground and can look forward to building exciting cars for years to come. And that's the motor news for this week. You know the only thing that high road reporter Craig Singh hoss likes more than driving cars is fixing them. He spends more time under our cars hood than most people do in front of a television. But when Craig needs parts for the classic cars that he loves he can't just run down to a local auto parts store. So he heads to Pennsylvania so the classic car candy store called Carlisle. Well here I go again pounding the gravel in search of the proper old intake manifold from my Mustang just like in the quest for the Holy Grail. I never know what I'll see next.
All Chevy stuff. Thank you. OK so I know I'm going to see a lot of Chevy parts but there's an incredible array of parts for almost any car and even some old friends like Bill Miller. One of the founders of the Karlov flea market you know Craig there's there's more than just that coming to Carlisle just to find that part. There's a mistake of the car world of treasure hunting as well as looking for that part. You may look for years and years and years before that park becomes available but then it's there and you get to finish that car that you've been working on for so many years. We do 10 events here at Carlisle. People probably don't realize what a big hobby the car hobby is but there's more than a half million people that cross through these gates every season a half million. Well at least I'm in good car crazy company and it's a family hobby. That's the nice part about it the kids come and the kids get interested in the cars because the family's interested in the cars and it's it's a good clean hobby that the kids can get into and not have problems with.
Now the only problem this kid has is not getting side tracked while I'm looking for that one special part. Between talking about car parts that I have already. Right. It's the good stuff. I have this style just doesn't have his place and toys that I'd like to have. It's easy to get distracted especially when you see toilets. In addition to the fleamarket There's the car corral with hundreds of collector cars that are there for you to inspect. Purchase. Or maybe just admire. Wow what a great car. This is your car. Oh yeah. This fall is going to be our 20th show our 20th fall show. You know it's it's gotten to be not only do you need that part of to be that car. It's Carlisle time and everybody comes to Carlisle It's really become a tradition.
I'm looking for a treasure. Good price too. We all have our heroes and for many of us the admiration of the special people has had a big influence on our lives. Craig thing was a teenager his hero was Carol Shelby. His exploits helped shape Craig's love for fast race courses and big big Mustangs a few years ago. Craig finally got the chance to meet his hero. It was quite literally a dream come true. But making his teenage dreams come true for Cragg. Our next visit with him shows he's decided to go back even further. When I was a kid before I discovered cars I loved
airplanes. I read about them built models of them. Dreamed about them. And of all the planes I dreamed of flying. I wanted to fly in a. You guessed it a P-51 Mustang. To me the P-51 symbolized everything that was fast. Powerful and decent. It was democracy's airplane. Designed by North American Aviation for the British in 1940 it became the plane with the range to escort American B-17 and B-24 bombers to the heart of Nazi occupied Europe. They were the bomber crews best life insurance flown by genuine heroes like George Vanden Heuvel and Ace with three
and a half Ariel less dangerous ground attack increase band and who keep 51. Call them Mary mine. Today. That very aircraft is owned and flown by another hero of mine. Sports car racing legend and pilot Charlie camp. Ever since I was a kid I always loved P-51 and thought this would be the ideal airplane. So I acquired the airplane in 1978. I had no idea how to fly the airplane. I wound up with the P-51 no way to fly and finally ran into Gordon place. You can see the California top flight and fly it. He does. After years of racing Pan-Am 974 is sure he feels right at home with the P-51 fifteen hundred horsepower. Was released from. An engine. Now normally I'd love to climb into a fast Mustang but I've been told that the parachute doesn't work.
I get to take it back. Charlie arranged for P-51 aerobatic pilot Alan Henley to show me the sky in the Mary mine. Believe me life will never be quite the same. The. People who want to live their lives very weak. You feel like you're putting the airplane been flying. But you know like don't ever. Remember the air the
78 pilot is going to be horrible the low ride on the airplane. Pretty weak even by today's instances they talk about a hundred eighty degrees per second road. In flying the airplane. Get a cold chill. Bad bad bad. Beautiful Marylynn bad. The real you it will take to the air will just go almost vertical with the amount of power you get the wheel the wheel to. This. Is.
