Your host for Motor Week. John Davis. Well hello and welcome to the start of the 27 season of Motor Week. We're glad to have you with us. If an engine can be an icon on the Ferrari V12 is one of the auto world's greatest from the original 125 sport of 1947 to the more recent 575 Marron ELO V12 Ferrari's have always
delivered an exceptional driving experience one that promises to be even more sublime. And this ultra sophisticated 599 GTI be Ferrando So let's once again enter the stable of the prancing horse and meet the newest icon from the maestro's of Marin Allo. From the first moment that you punched the skinny pedal on the right in the 2007 Ferrari 599 DTV feer Rano you know that you got a hold of something special. It's a feeling well known to the dedicated Ferrari owners and one that we had Motor Week have happily experienced over the last quarter century every time we test the latest of Marron ellos V12 off springs today in the year 0 Ferrari's 60th anniversary. The 599 takes the engine configuration that propelled Enzo Ferrari his first car and pushes it to new heights.
The six leader V 12 produces a stunning six hundred eleven horsepower and a massive 440 eight pound feet of torque. It not only produces 96 more horsepower than its predecessor the 575 Mehra Nello but as it ramps to a sky high 80 400 rpm. Know that it's one hundred two horsepower per liter. It's an industry first from a naturally aspirated production six liter engine. The Enzo derived all aluminum power plant also closed electronically controlled variable timing for its forty eight valves and a lighter twin plate lower nurture clutch connected to our car's rear mounted F1 super fast six speed gearbox. It's the newest and by far smoother this evolution of Ferrari's high speed transmission derived from the firm's ultra successful Formula 1 racing program steering wheel mounted paddles instantly trigger shift to take a mere 100 milliseconds. Or one can choose to run the gearbox in totally automatic mode which is world smoother than previous efforts. The drive train is complex F1 developed
electronics include a steering wheel mounted vehicle dynamics controller that allows the driver to select I slow grip sport race and see s t modes. This system integrates the stability control new F1 track traction control the gearbox and the magnetic fluid suspension. All this race bred technology is housed in a lightweight aluminum chassis which when covered with a sensual pin in Farina style Burl Aneta alloy body allows this 599 to weigh in at 93 pounds less than the 575 Marinello and it always in with lightning quick 0 to 60 runs in 3.7 seconds that best the last 575 we tested by four tenths European cars with a special watch mode with computer controlled chips are even faster. The exhaust erupts with a glorious roar as the V12 rockets the 599 up to speed with the top being over 205 shift lights atop the available carbon fiber steering will help
you keep up with the blinding acceleration the piranhas speed is matched by tremendous traction as the combination of sophisticated vehicle dynamics. It's a perfectly balanced chassis and sticky ultra low profile rubber. Make this the most agile Gran Turismo to ever wear the prancing horse but turning off all the electronics truly unleashes this mighty Italian stallion with all 611 ponies reaching the rear tires. A deft touch is required to keep the rear wheels in line. That is if you want to. Fortunately optional carbon ceramic brakes that can stop a space shuttle are available just in case you see a black and white before they see you. The only disappointment is the light touch the steering which doesn't deliver the kind of feedback such a powerful car requires. No disappointment with the accommodations however. The fear around a cabin is a symphony of leather carbon fiber and aluminum. The dashboards flowing shape manages to look both modern and retro without too much of
either and the instrument cluster mixes both analog and digital in a most efficient manner. The carbon fiber shell and firm padding combined to give the ultra deep power adjusts for tremendous support and rigidity. This superb driver's car also packs plenty of luxury amenities including dual zone climate controls high end audio and Bluetooth cellphone connection and can be personalized with a virtually endless selection of leather and trim options as well as custom fitted luggage to make the best use of the eleven point three cubic foot trunk or set up for the racetrack with an optional roll bar and four point racing harness and lightweight 20 inch wheels all around to replace the stock 19 inch front 20 inch rear combination. And yes it's all incredibly expensive. Base price for the 599 GTV Ferrando is two hundred eighty thousand two hundred ninety five dollars. That price includes forty five hundred dollars in gas guzzler tax and one thousand eight hundred
fifty dollars for dealer prep and transportation. The 2007 Ferrari 599 GTV Ferrando and its exquisite V12 engine are so much more than just fast or expensive. They are both history and desire. They are the sights the sounds and the feel that are unique to Ferrari. And 60 years after the first Ferrari the 12 bored to life they easily live up to the enduring legacy of the prancing horse. Coming up driving big ground. What a beautiful sight. Time now for a stop by Goss's garage. Let's see what clever diagnosis our favorite car doc has for us this week. John this time we have some solutions to common problems. Now if you tow a trailer you may experience electrical problems. How do you know whether the electrical
problems are in the trailer or in the toll vehicle. Well now from innovative products of America we have testers. They come in sizes that fit all of the popular trailer connectors. Simply plug them in operate the different electrical functions on the vehicle the lights light up to tell you if each one of those is working. If there's no problem found in the tow vehicle you know the trouble is in the trailer and then it saves you half of the testing time. OK now you made also told multiple trailers with the same vehicle and this adapter can do a great job because it has all of the Popular Science's trailer connectors built into one unit. Just plug it in. Connect up what ever trailer you want. And here is something. This is from let's go arrow. Now this is what is called a silent hitch pin really clever goes into the trailer hitch
like this because you don't line it with a hole. Then you put the bolt through it and use a wrench to tighten it up. It does away with all that rattling and clattering that goes on from a conventional hitch pin. And again from let's go aero the gears spaced 34. Lots of you have vehicles that are much larger than you really need and you buy them online because you need extra space two or three times a year. Well this is a good solution. Buy a sensible sized vehicle and use something like this this fits into the receiver and the hitch on the vehicle. It has a cord that plugs into the trailer connector has lights for the turn signals and brakes and tail lights holds a lot of gear easy to install. No more on the top so that it decreases a lot of fuel economy. And in addition to that get it on one person can do it. Fold the legs up and away you go. Very very handy piece of equipment.
And if you have a question or comment write to me the address is Motor Week Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. Most folks feel that a driver's license is a rite of passage. Turn 16 take driver's ed pass the test and you're on your way. But for professional drivers those who drive trucks and buses for a living it's a much tougher pursuit. And while every state has standards nationwide companies with truck plates have their own standards. And as Henry Topaz recently found out one of the most familiar expects its trainees to go over the edge for excellence. You see them out on the road every day. They're the familiar brown trucks of U.P.S. while driving one of these vehicles is more than just a jump in and go kind of job. It takes some serious training and to do that the men and women that train the U.P.S. drivers across the country need to go to school themselves.
And that happens in South Holland Illinois a U.P.S. is driver training school or d ts. But first a little backstory. The company was originally founded in 19 07 in Seattle Washington as the American messenger company. With the addition of a package delivery service business grew quickly and the company's name was changed to United Parcel Service or UBS along with the enormous rise in business in a massive fleet of vehicles used to transport over 500000 packages across the United States every day. These 1 2 and 3 trailer feeder trucks haul a massive amount of cargo and it takes a massive amount of responsibility and training to drive them. The students here are the best of the best and upon their completion of the program if they make it through it will be placed around the country to train U.P.S. is an army of tractor trailer drivers. No small or easy task. The program for these specially chosen men and women really begins back at home for driver trainer
candidate study for five weeks before even arriving at the training center. That's when the course kicks into overdrive for three weeks Monday through Friday. Students eat breathe and sleep safety. They even take up residence at the center's hotel like dormitory. I don't think that the weekends are for goofing off though. Students are encouraged to not only study during their precious free time but to practice hands on equipment operation in teams of two. Any chance they get. Remember candidates are selected for this program. So it's a pretty big deal that can really pay off big should they pass the course. My Actually my manager my boss he came here back in 2001 and great program it's a very intense program very thorough program. You push me push me to do this and I thought it was a great idea and wanted to do it and I probably got the opportunity to do it and here I am. We're checking everything from entering the parliaments under the engine to arguing everything about our tires and says has a tire brake chambers brake linings from Stern for the front stand was the rear wheels drive lines airlines or brake lines very thorough and a
thorough check it is as part of the so-called pre-trip students are required to explain and demonstrate approximately 400 items or systems before a tractor and trailer can even leave the line jets that suppressed the cover for a start it's very important so you're correct in coming up to make us stop going to the see if you get rear ended. We're not just interest in the safety of our self-image as a citizen of the US is very important I think. Actually not threats no. I said the big three points especially that focus on safety is exactly what the TSA instructors hammerings their students in class and out on the road and it's what those who graduate left the size to the new drivers they teach back at home. Tom Brokaw four were coordinated of the d ts program knows the level of dedication required of a student. He himself a graduate of the program has to be 100 percent by and they have to know the methods called the commitment not only has to be in their head it
has to be in their heart because they have to believe with their training. If they don't believe it then they're not going to be able to train a driver. All they have when they're out there training is their credibility. So we have to be right all the time and judging from UBS is tractor trailer on road safety record of just one accident for every one million miles driven they are in with UBS vehicles racking up over 2.5 billion miles a year. They have to be sell for the next time you see one of these trucks out on the open road. Remember they're delivering a lot more than just packages they're delivering safe. This 2007 Toyota Tundra crew Mack's s are five four wheel drive pickup joined our long term fleet in June and so far has put in a flawless performance. While you hear a lot about Tundras new Texas assembly plant room the crew makes models all come out of the original tundra facility in Indiana are long term or came with Toyota's new three hundred eighty one horsepower 5.7 leader twin cam.
The power is about 70 percent of all tundra. As you might guess this full size truck has an appetite to match. But frankly at 3000 miles it's fifteen point five mpg economy on regular is better than we expected. We also are surprised that we like the tiny rearview camera screen tucked up overhead. It gives you just enough extra confidence when backing the spacious cabin is a hit with our staff too. However the dash is piano black finish looked out of place in a pick up and the silver pay to gauge bezels look like 1970s Detroit. Still the new Tundra has earned our respect. We also have a lot of respect for our four wheel drive Chevrolet Suburban LTD with room for eight and a thousand pounds of trailer. Our bird has been nonstop working and playing this summer. In fact after 10 months the odometer has already passed 24000 miles with fuel economy from the three hundred twenty horsepower V-8 a modest fourteen point seven
miles per gallon of regular. The interior is not only extremely comfortable for long trips with lots of nooks and crannies for all your stuff but it has the best fit in finish we've ever seen on a GM truck. It's not a daily driver but for miles of long distance family smiles. The Chevrolet Suburban has no equal. Next time the much smaller Nissan Versa subcompact and must a CX 7 crossover on motor weeks long term road test update. Now Jessica choccy has this week's What the 2007 Indy Car Series nearing the finish line. The switch between method all and 100 percent fuel grade ethanol to power these clean racing machines has proven to be a winning move both on the track and in pit lane. Ethanol fuel not only burns cleaner than methanol but it has a higher octane rating improves fuel efficiency and gives better engine performance. Something every race car driver once in the car
brings its own fuel to every race so each competitor knows the fuel is consistent from car to car to 10. If we can run them in our restores at 240 miles an hour I think they can run on the street to get crews are also breathing easier finding that ethanol vapors are not as harsh on the eyes and lungs as methanol. It seems the only ones who haven't noticed any change are the fans. Indy car racing remains every bit as fast and exciting as ever but it is now less harmful to the environment and it's helping to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Indy cars the first and so far only major racing series to recognize the benefits about the law and to mandate its use in all its cars. The move came about after driver Paul Dana secured sponsorship from the ethanol industry and then sold the league on the idea of switching to this clean renewable domestic fuel tragically. Paul was killed while practicing for the first race. 6 and never saw his dream become a reality other racing series from Sprint cars to drag racers are taking notice of Indy cars green leadership
the American Le Monde series is now running a 10 percent ethanol gasoline blend and other motor sports teams are also beginning to discover the clean power of ethanol. And that's it for this week's Modern news. It was 1976 when the first Honda Accord made its way to America and upon its arrival no one could envision the success it would enjoy. But with sales topping 10 million and the eighth generation ready to hit dealers lots. You can't deny it's fame and fortune as a clear benchmark of the American mid-size family car. It seems the Accord has no place to go but up in popularity. So will the past speak for the corage future once again. Thanks for Honda reworking their flagship accord it's serious business accord is after all their highest volume vehicle so Hondas goal was to make their timeless front wheel drive car line fresher and better without
upsetting its core family values. Both 2 and 4 door accord to grow in size and for the first time use Hondas super rigid and safe ace body structure. The sedan now classified as a large car whereas a one hundred ten point two inch wheelbase a two point three inch jump. Overall length is up three to one hundred ninety four point one inches. The coupe has also expanded but it still has a shorter wheel base and smaller footprint than the sedan from unique styling to suspension tuning. The new coupe pushes the court name further into a sporty direction. But during the accords Boston based press intro we spend most of our time with the bread and butter sedan though completely restyled with a more sophisticated theme. It's not as edgy is the Accord Coupe auto show concept but the essence is there the front facia makes an upscale Acura like impression with lower profile rap headlamps a smart looking six point grill and deep
channels for fog lamps. The court's body side has a strong upward character groove and BMW cut rear side glass. The rear also shows European influence with less witchy tail amps and a raised trunk lid that hints at a spoiler. The sophistication under the hood however is pure Hondo with poor high tech engine variations in the basic elec sedan a more powerful 2.4 leader Twin Cam Ivy Tech in line for puts out one hundred seventy seven horsepower eleven more than before and one hundred sixty one pound feet of torque top level sedans and a coupe gain an even higher rated four with 190 horsepower and 162 pound feet of torque. Four cylinder manual and automatic transmissions are both 5 speed up arrow up single cam variable timing V-6 as are available both with three point five liters of displacement and two hundred sixty eight horsepower. That's up 24 from last year's 3 leader and two hundred forty eight pound feet of torque to fuel economy.
The new accord may be larger and more powerful but it's still pretty efficient. The base four cylinder with an automatic has a government fuel economy ratings of 21 city 30 highway on regular. With the latter number down only one while the Accord hybrid is no more a clean turbo diesel accord is waiting in the wings. A court sit ins have always handled better than most rivals even if they put a smooth ride well above cornering prowess. The new car follows that rule although with a double wishbone front suspension and a new bolted link where design and accord never felt more competent. Just in case the BSA electronic stability and traction control are now standard brakes are also upgraded. Gone are rear drums as all models wear for will display the abs and brake assist the accords large car interior gains in virtually every dimension. It's very spacious 106 cubic feet of cabin space is three point three more than last year and 4.6 more than the Toyota Camry.
Visibility is up to thanks to slimmer a pillers interior styling is clearly an evolution but with far more flair the dash sweeps up and away for an expansive feel. Trim is bolder and brighter dipping for an artistic center stack that still features large controls and a display screen. E x trim includes Honda's first doll controller that ties multiple functions to the display. Now that's one euro trade we could do without a 160 watt stereo is standard with upgrades including a 270 watt unit and voice prompted navigation with Bluetooth. Front seats are more supportive with height adjustment standard power heat and leather come with higher trim levels all accords now have steering wheel audio controls. While the deep gauges are less prone to glare and safety includes Hondas first dual chamber front side airbags the rear seat is roomy even for three adults but on like rivals the folding seat is not split for versatility.
There is a ski style passthrough to the 14 cubic foot trunk. That is one of the smallest in its class. As of our taping Honda had not released pricing for the 2008 Accord but we expect little change ranging from about $20000 for elex trim to just over $30000 for a fully loaded B 68 cell with so many high n attribute showing up on new midsize cars. It's easy to see why they represent the best car buying values. The 2008 Honda Accord clearly accelerates that trend. All while continually improving upon itself it is more accord than ever before. The quintessential family car. Well I hope you'll join us next week for more motor which will test all new editions of the original mini vans the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country along with Cylons newly refined and bigger boxcar the x B. I'm John Davis. We'll see you then.
