This time on motorways a really big pickup for Nissan folks like instituting touring and cool fun it can achieve. It's a come drive with us next. Motorola TV's original automotive magazine by Cowboys where car people Motor Week starting it's my kind of show. It's our kind of show all about cars and trucks and the cool stuff people put on their cars and trucks and there are tips on tires and service and maybe we should just watch. Great right with you and buy. What are you looking for. Your host for Motor Week. John Davis long walk again to motor week. We're glad to have you with us. The full size pickup segment has long been ruled by Detroit auto makers but it has big pick ups became more and more popular and
profitable import brands couldn't resist the temptation to cash in. The first was Toyota with a T 100 m tundra. And now Nissan is taking the plunge with the all new Titan. But after decades of American dominance is the Titan strong enough to haul away a slice of the full size pick up pawn. It better be because Nissan has invested a huge amount of money and engineering talent in making the 2004 Titan the equal of its domestic competitors like the big guns from Ford Chevy GMC and the tightness built here and a new Canton Mississippi assembly plant and built a box ladder frame. The frame is supported by a leaf spring rear suspension and a choice of 17 or 18 inch wheels tightens one hundred thirty nine point
eight inch wheelbase is true full size and nearly a foot longer than the Toyota Tundra and it accommodates either a crew cab with for a full sized six inch bed or a King Cab with six foot six inch bed and twin rear access panels. The panels open 160 degrees almost twice as wide as the competition. The ease loading at the rear seats. There is no tight regular cab. Both bad links offer a number of innovations including the industry's first factory applied spray on bed liner and Nissan's utility track bed channel system. It consists of five sea channel rails and a set of movable utility cleats. They give an almost unlimited selection of tie down points. A great idea as long as you don't frequently carry gravel mulch or anything else they can get stuck in the channels. There's also a lockable left bedside storage compartment 12 volt power point and cargo the cab and tail gate payload
capacity is a maximum one thousand six hundred forty three pounds for the crew cab. One thousand six hundred ninety two pounds for the the power to move all that cargo comes from Nissan's new five point six liter all aluminum in durance V8 is three hundred five horsepower and three hundred seventy nine pound feet of torque comes courtesy of 32 valves and chain driven dual overhead cams. The only transmission choice is a new high speed automatic with the tow haul mode for heavy work and work it does with zero to 60 run of seven point two seconds and a maximum towing capacity of over 95 hundred pounds. We spent a lot of time in a crew and in Maryland competition to be much more refined and sophisticated than the tight tight but not spongy and not as crisp as the new
tips the scales a thousand pounds. But with the Pathfinder clearance limited slip traction control. But the Titan is in today and in a place to park your money materials not terribly expensive. Most of the amenities we now expect of a luxury SUV including leather a navigation system and a DVD entertainment system and in the passenger side bucket. In the
rear the crew cab offers real room for tall adults in the King Cab the very right rear seat cushions split and fold for extra cargo space. Pricing for the Titan has not yet been set but when sales start in December expect the king Katz base price to hover around $25000. The crew cab should be priced from about $30000 putting tighten pricing in line with that of market leader the Ford F-150 just matching the latest domestic trucks like the new 50 or the robust Dodge Ram is a tall order for any new pickup. But the 2004 Nissan Titan looks like it sharp enough tough enough and big enough to carve out a meaningful slice of the full sized pickup trucks. And then some. Coming up camping out Jean Stein Time now for a stop by Goss's garage. Let's see what kind of handy car care
advice Pat has for us this week. John the garage doesn't have to be dim and dismal. Can really be a very pleasant place if you apply yourself. Well start by decorating the walls. Easy way to do that is with posters in inexpensive frames get something that you like put them around the walls. It will look great. Also something that is becoming very popular antique license plates. They're available on the internet lots and lots of them available on the Internet. They range in price from about two to five dollars per plate. And you can get them for your state or the year of your car whatever turns you on. They're very good looking too. Hey here's something else that's becoming very popular. That's antique signs. Some of them are true and take some of them are reproductions. Pick something that you will like. Maybe the make of car that you own or some product that you really like and you can get assigned to go along with it.
All right you want some place that's comfortable to sit in if that sitting area is primarily for the kids. Well an old van seat very inexpensive made of vinyl incredibly durable and easy to keep clean. But if you want to more glamorous members of your household to spend time with you this is racing furniture. What we have here is a sofa in their finish line pattern. It's available in NASCAR and HRA versions and your favorite driver and so on. Good looking and very comfortable now for Goss's garage here on Motor Week. Well we wanted to do something with our floor and that's something that you should do too because that makes the garage a lot more comfortable and appealing. We chose race Dick race Dick comes in panels and the panels snap together. You know it's very easy to put
down. It's comfortable to stand on and it comes in a wide variety of colors. Expect to pay about three dollars per square foot for the race stick. If you have a question or a comment write to me. The address is Motor Week always Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. Most SUV sold today never see real dirt. But there are those folks who believe that a four by four looks best when it's covered with money and a lot of those folks are naturally Jeep owners. But Where can fans go for real off road fun for friends a jeep have the answer and recently invited FII reporter Jennifer because nervous to come out and play for many kids summertime means camp time and nine years ago decided to camp is no longer just for kids anymore. C'mon c'mon. There's no breaking news that post on them are welcome to camp where kids of all sizes can take three days to celebrate one of the most notable off road vehicles in
the world. This year's event was held in the very scenic Blue Ridge Mountains on the overages St. Just outside of Charlottesville Virginia. Annual Gathering brings together Jeep owners and drivers from all over the United States indeed all over the world to get together to swap stories about their vehicles take them off. Road experience trails learn how to go off the road and entertain your families and a whole host of ways for three fun filled days and the days are certainly full. Event is loaded with activities that embrace the symbol of since deep desire not adventure. It seems like rock climbing with obvious activity and from my experience on the rock climbing wall it's a lot harder than it looks. But for those who are even more daring try climbing the camp to even venture tower. There's also scuba diving skateboarding and motocross just to satiate your appetite for excitement. The activities that are here are endless and I think every year we add more and more. But what you really can't forget is
why campers come here in the first place to celebrate their jeeps. There are those very specific imagery like off road trails where you can take your vehicle and challenge yourself. Instead in successive levels of difficulty in learning more about off roading in your jeep there are various types of trails to choose from depending on your level of expertise with off roading. You can opt for the basics with one I want a challenging trail ride or if you want to feel like you're in the movie to writer has set up a course to experience the new wrangler Rubicon which is similar to the one used in the film and we have one of several vehicles that were used in that movie right here in this display and this vehicle is a wrangler Rubicon that has been modified especially with appearance items and then special additional off road capability items. But with all the fun comes some learning. Owners will have the opportunity to ask questions and find out about their own vehicles. If you're interested in Jeep vehicles you can talk to our engineers and our engineers e.g.
for interest in talking to owners. So we have a series of engineering round tables where our owners can go learn more about their wranglers or Cherokees or Grand Cherokees or liberties. And we have the opportunity to ask them about what they're doing with them and what they'd like us to do and what many of the attendants are doing is making their jeep their own. Many of the vehicles have been modified and personalized but you're going to see many Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees and the older Cherokees especially that have been modified for off road use and personalized in many ways with everything from personalized license plates to names for the vehicles. Interesting paint jobs and other accessories that owners have added after they purchase the vehicle. We encourage that. You'd think that the three days of Jeeves would be enough fun. But the real climax of the event was a G Jubilee concert which featured popular bands. So if you're a Jeep owner and want to go to camp and wait for your invitation and get ready to hit the trails last.
Hi I'm Craig saying hi with Collector Car expert John appen and on the auction block today is a 1983 Ferrari three away GTX Quatro valve. This is just like Tom Selleck drove in a TV show Magnum. Yes this is the classic pin and Farina design. This is probably one of the best designs the Penan freen ever did on a Ferrari chassis. The basic shape came out in 1975 went through at least about four iterations not in the body shape but in terms of engines and drive away and speed. Speaking of engines this is a very special engine the quadrille. This is the first year for the Quad or for Valve personal under cylinder heads were added to the car. Beautiful car of course this is also the ass as opposed to the B model. The beast Chris stands for Burnett and that's a solid top little coupe as Italians call it. S stood for spider or used to mean a convertible. This is more of a target but this is the open 3 0 8 Ferrari. Price wise would you think something like this will go for on the auction block today. Well these the 83
Sarabi 5s are all the same the 85 have some upgrades are a little bit more desirable so these 83 these are a great value they're going to bring anywhere from 35 to maybe the low 40s. And this car maybe will bring thirty six thirty seven thousand today. It's absolutely beautiful and the perfect car if you want to play Magnum P.I.. A new model year means more new car keys on the key ring and every year the key ring gets heavier. So let's see what these 2004 keys have to offer. Our first set of keys fits an all new midsize sedan from Suzuki to 2004 says Sukey Verona is the largest car the smallest of Japanese importers has ever sold in the U.S. and the first product to emerge from General Motors purchase of Korean car maker Daewoo. Like other Korean built midsize sedan the Verona and S L X and E X tram delivers modern styling practical performance and affordable
luxury with a long list of standard features to start the Verona bears the only standard inline six cylinder engine in its class and the 2.5 leader 24 about twin cam 6 puts out a respectable 155 horsepower through a front drive for speed automatic transmission. Wrapped in an attractive European smooth skin from thoughtful aerodynamic curves and classic chrome touches looks both energetic and elegant and in lots of storage. Smart luxury with a very comfortable thought the Verona was an impressive mid-size on the highway right smartly on twisty roads and it's a real value for anyone who's looking for them. Look for a price of about $17000
around $20000. Not cheap but seriously competitive with other families. Now stepping away from safe sedans our next set of keys fits up faster sportier ride. Dare we say Porsche. The 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo cabriolet is back in the market after 14 years and once again is the open air sports car that embodies everything driving enthusiasm for the all wheel drive turbo Cabrio is breathtaking performance. Zero to 60 in just over four seconds relies on his twin turbo flat 6 twin cam engine powerful only begins to describe its four hundred twenty horsepower output. Very impressive but at first sight it's the Cabrio stance that is the most captivating. It's wide wheel arches retracting rear wing and striking front spoiler left all combined aerodynamic function with unmistakable character careful structural reinforcement to preserve the stiffness ride and most importantly
handling prowess of the coup along with its all wheel drive traction. The stiff and stable body includes a powerful soft top with rear glass and defroster. This car has everything you'd expect from the turbo coupe. Come for outstanding performance. The engine sounds downright wicked spirit his driving experience the Porsche the management and for piston picks caliber vintage disc brakes the fun and blare of the new car parked outside your home. Are you one hundred twenty eight thousand two hundred dollars a high flying fun was ever cheap. Family hauling cheap thrills forward has dropped us a set of keys that will better suit your driving. The 2004 replacement is Ford's latest effort towards the perfect minivan with two Power
Choices. Standard is a one hundred ninety three horsepower three point six. It can be bested by an optional 202 horsepower V-6 that delivers the most pulling power torque 265 feet of any minivan. The new interior design is airy or more modern with a dash that's a preview of the more sophisticated approach do for Ford cars with seating for up to seven and sliding doors. The free star adds a new solid back flat into the floor folding third seat the most desired feature of any minivan today. It allows easy conversion to a maximum cargo capacity of one hundred thirty four cubic feet through an available power assisted Hatch always a Ford Hallmark concern Freestar safety is top notch. Electronic stability control and side curtain airbags for all three rows. A minivan exclusive are available. Another engineering success for Freestar is its ultra quiet cabin using the latest in
sound dampening materials available in five trams all with distinctive exteriors and interiors base prices for the new Freestar will range from about twenty one thousand to thirty five thousand dollars. That's a lot of minivan for competitive prices. With the 2004 Freestar Ford may just have families figured out just like we've already figured out what new car keys are motorway crew will share with you real soon. And now for something completely different. A sport utility vehicle. OK it's not just another SUV. It's the first SUV from German stalwart Volkswagen and it's called the touring. And while BW may be one of the last to join the sport you tribe it does so with an impressive technical and luxury Rissa may but in such a crowded segment is the toerag a case of better late than never or too little too late with
at first glance the 2004 Volkswagen tarag looks familiar that's because it's built on a unit Ty's body and chassis co-developed with the Porsche Cayenne. Yet the tour Reg is a more diverse sport ute. It looks like a beefed up Assad wagon Angle's pavement like a large touring car conquers terrain like a tank and still mimics the luxury of a par sedan named after a nomadic tribe from the Sahara Desert. To read literally means free food. Stylus clearly had preyed on delivering an exterior that is rugged and progressive and though it does boast a recognizable front facia gym like headlight casings and a generous air intakes added beneath the stylized upper radiator grill and classic off road SUV appeal the Turok slightly arch group line includes serious cargo rails for easy rooftop transporting it all sits atop artist's huge standard 18 inch tires as robust wheel arches and substantial bumpers also accentuate
this able bodied in the rear as a large patch with a separate opening glass panel founded by distinct lamp shapes the term easily pegged as a VW in traffic. The tour eggs out side curves are carried over to the inside with its sectional BW car approach to dash design. RV a standard wood trim with chrome and brushed aluminum accents fancy's things up nicely gauges are simple and direct if incomplete. There are standard side curtain airbags a CD audio system and dual zone or optional four zone climate controls. P.S. navigation is also optional. Again like beat up your cars the shifter resides in the center console along with other controls cup holders and plenty of storage. Our tour rag had the available leather upholstery and 12 boy adjustable heated front bucket seats front room is generous. Likewise the 60 40 split folding rear seat that fits three comfortably. What's missing is third row seating. Something that more and more SUV buyers are asking
for. Instead there's a good amount of cargo capacity 31 cubic feet seats up and expanding to seventy one cubic feet of the seats down. Fifty three hundred pound tarag is moved down the terrain by a four point two liter Twin Cam Porty valve the eight borrowed from Audi output while far short of the Cayennes is still substantial at three hundred ten or so power and 300 two pound feet of torque towing capacity is a hearty seventy seven hundred pounds a 220 horsepower V-6 engine is standard and a three hundred thirteen horsepower twin turbo beaten diesel is due here next year. Sure exemptions are linked to a standard six speed automatic transmission with tiptronic manual mode standard two is beat up is new 4 x motion per minute four wheel drive system. High load transfer case and Hill asset and decent control. Normal torque split is 50/50 front and rear console switch gear controls the standard locking center differential. An optional rear locker add in up to
12 inches of ground clearance and the turret has a very impressive off road performer and whether on road or off road the touring really gets something goes. It launches from zero to 60 in seven point eight seconds and wraps up the quarter mile and fifteen point eight seconds at eighty nine miles per hour. The V8 is robust and smooth all the line with great low end torque chips are seamless. Mid-size one hundred twelve point four inch wheelbase chassis rides on either a coil spring double wishbone suspension or RV 80 electronic air suspension with an active damping system called Sky Hook sky hook has three settings sport automatic or comfort. The air suspension raises or lowers the chassis to one of four Heights depending on driving conditions and includes a manual override. Overall ride quality is decent. Neither stiff nor spongy handling is a little soft too with more body roll than we expected from the Skyhook system.
Yet with standard skid control the tour regular extremely stable and hard cornering skyhook get a better job of controlling dive during braking for Will video disc with ABS and brake assist stop this VW from 60 to zero and a good average distance of one hundred twenty seven feet. Fuel mileage is on par with most SUV in the midsize class 14 city and 18 highway with 17 being our everyday average but the true Reg is anything but an average midsize SUV with prices it's something of a premium. The extremely well-equipped basics tarag carries a base price of thirty five thousand five hundred fifteen dollars or on par with the Lexus r x 330 RBA starts at forty one thousand three hundred fifteen dollars which by the way is about half that of a Porsche Cayenne V8. The tour rag with the premium package which includes navigation totals fifty three thousand two hundred sixty five dollars. We suggest you buy a map though tarty we think the 2004 boat's wagon to Irag was worth the wait. It's
husky go get a magnitude classic VW looks out shine otherwise tired SUV standards and even add a few new tunes to the sport huge repertoire. While I hope you'll join us next week for more motorway tests Jaguars all aluminum X Jason Dan and Buicks premier sport utility. I'm John Davis. We'll see you then.
