Well hello and welcome again to motor week. We're glad to have you with us. Toyota's small 1996 Rav 4 started a big revolution. It was the first SUV to be based on a car like unibody instead of a traditional truck frame. The idea was to appeal to buyers who wanted utility and all weather traction but seldom went off road.
The RAV 4 was a huge success and they spawn numerous copies. Well now there's an all new Rav 4 for 2006. Well it turned the SUV market on its head again. The third generation 2006 Toyota Rav 4 is not just improved but completely restyled more powerful and yes bigger and more versatile than ever. The one hundred four point seven inch wheel base is nearly seven inches longer while the overall length is up 14 inches with its outside spare tire. The compact Rav 4 is now only a half foot shorter than a Hummer H3 but that link lets Raeford be the first compact SUV with three rows seven passenger seating. The previous Rav is cute styling has been replaced by sleek sporty moderately rugged good looks that fit its longer frame perfectly as do the wheel 79 standard and
8 teams with the sport package to go with it's tougher to take. Toyota has given the Rav 4 more. Howard for the first time optional B6 and all new twin cam 3.5 lieder designed with variable valve timing generates best in class 269 horsepower and two hundred forty six pound feet of torque maximum towing is now a hefty thirty five hundred pounds. But a lot of buyers will probably go for the base 2.4 liter Twin Cam 4 cylinder. This upgrade I for makes a very adequate 166 horsepower up five and one hundred sixty five pound feet of torque transmission choices are all automatic. A gated shift for speed for the eye for and a 5 speed with a V-6 as before the drive train connects to either front wheel drive or single speed on demand for will draw it in auto mode torque shifts to the rear when starting off or when slip is due. Tech did a manual locking switch split Stuart 55 percent
front 45 percent rear for low speed going in tougher conditions made even easier with seven and a half inches of ground clearance and a hill start assist and downhill assist control on most models. While all sounds most promising for rotten winter weather. Our first turn at the Rav 4 wheel came in sunny Santa Barbara California. Naturally we ran for the V-6 and were not disappointed. It's strong smooth and fast. Toyota estimates 0 to 60 should take only 7 seconds and it's even pretty efficient EPA fuel economy ratings are 20 city and 26 highway with it or will drive one surprises the rabs bores vary for most uncarved like Rod. Indeed on all but the smoothest paved road built sports car are harsh and we found road noise was quite intrusive. On the other hand the Rav 4 spore will independent suspension. Britney Spears and struts and rear double wishbones shines on twisty roads. It's tight agile
and entertaining. Rob Ford's new electric power steering works with a standard electronic vehicle stability control plus traction control to provide just the right amount of assist for any driving condition. And though we did more driving than stopping we were steadied by the four will disc with standard abs and brake assist. A look inside the new Rav 4 proves it's a gen up status to the multi-level dash with metallic trim and bold switchgear should really appeal to younger buyers. Standard features across all models baseboard and limited include tilt steering wheel CD stereo and rear seat DVD player. Which will be appreciated by both the second and third row occupants. The 60 40 second spot now has 4 after adjustment and back rest recline the optional 50/50 split third row is expected Lee tight but small children probably won't mind crawling on their hands and knees over the fold only second row to get there.
Ditch the third row or keep it bolted for thirty six point poor human feet or storage 73 cubic feet with all seats down big for its glass but not the biggest. And neither are prices although they are up base prices without a break for the new ramp or are twenty thousand three hundred dollars for a four cylinder four by two and twenty one thousand seven hundred dollars for a four by four. The six models started twenty two thousand three hundred thirty five dollars for a four by two and twenty three thousand seven hundred thirty five dollars for a four by four. Times change and so has the Rav 4. What started as a great small idea is now a bigger and still impressive effort. It's very much in tune with what buyers now expect from any new utility. That is the biggest possible versatility and the smallest most efficient package possible. While the 2006 Toyota Rav 4 is not as revolutionary as the original It will clearly leave its mark.
Coming up full size and then some. You know we learn a lot by hanging around Goss's garage. But even Pat likes to get out of the garage once in a while. And you won't believe where he ends up. Done. This time we have some tips for the do it yourself earn what they can do to make the home shop more user friendly. And to that end we've come to Statesville North Carolina and Ray ever Hamm of ever ham motor sports Ray welcome to Goss's garage. Thank you for inviting me. Now your shop is absolutely gorgeous. What could the do it yourself or take away from this for the home shop. Well we appreciate you saying that it's something that we're very proud of here at our facility in Statesville. But the first thing we did when we built a new shop was look at what we were trying to accomplish in our world it's building and maintaining racecars. So I think the do it yourself and say what do they want to accomplish in their garage are they going to work on their cars are going to be a woodworking shop what do they want to do. And then look at their
space now we got to build the space that we wanted sometimes you're limited to space in your home already. So we try and make things dual purpose benches tables racking things that can do more than one job again to condense space. Another thing is we have to look at exactly what types of tools we want to put in that garage and equipment. So again if you analyze what jobs you want to do it will tell you what you need in your garage and cleanliness is very important to us an uncluttered work area which again goes along with space saving because you're going to do a much better job if you're not cluttered and you're going to be in a better mood you won't be so frustrated all time if you tripping over things. Absolutely no. I notice you spent obviously a lot of money and a lot of effort in making the lighting really good in here. While lighting is important if you're going to do a good job on something you've got to be able to see what you're doing and as I say when you get old like me sometimes it's a little bit harder so you want to have good lighting. Some of the work that we do is very minute under the hood so it's got to be lit well. And again it's a big
safety issue we really want to make sure that nobody gets hurt in our area and if you can see what you're doing chances are you're not going to skin a knuckle or trip over something you know that brings up the floor your floors very shiny it's light colored it reflects light. I take it that's on purpose. Yeah it really is and the floor is actually kind of a cheaper way of getting all of the efficiency that you can out of your lighting a little bit brighter flow will help brighten up the whole garage. Again if you drop something easier to find something on the floor easier maybe to clean up and not fall over. And again a big safety issue for us. Plus it looks good if your garage looks good and you feel good about it. You're going to have a lot more fun. Ray thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for having me. And if you have a question or comment write to me the address is Motor Week always Mills Maryland. 2 1 1. 1 7. Most folks that like trucks like big trucks in fact full size pickups outsell Compaq's 12:56
Henrico pass likes big trucks too. However he's found one that is really over the edge. When it comes to pickup trucks. You have your regular cabin crew cabin extended cabs gas diesel dually and any of a hundred different combinations of those you can pick up. But when it comes to the biggest pickup out there there's only one that takes that title. This. Is the international cxi the biggest pickup truck on the road. And I thought it would be the perfect candidate for a road test over the ad style. The first time you encounter the S. XTi short for commercial extreme truck a few things immediately come to mind. Huge imposing and serious. It's a truck for people who really love trucks. Truck is awesome. Need one badly. Because with a curb weight a fourteen thousand five hundred pounds it's way bigger than anything else in the pickup world. Luckily all you need to pilot this Pavan hammer is an every day driver's license. This heavy weight is just light enough so no commercial driver's license is
needed. Standing 9 feet tall and over 21 feet long he is ready for some seriously big work. And seriously big fun. Starting on the inside he is outfitted like any other luxury SUV or pick up leather seats. Backup camera CD player even a rear seat audio and video entertainment system. That's where the similarities end though. For starters say you want to I don't know pick up some Mull tree or yard or haul some junk to the dump. Well whatever it is you can carry 12000 pounds of it in the CIA pick up bed. That's right. It has a six ton payload and if you don't want to get your hands dirty offloading your cargo just dump it out. The optional dump feature is that. Want to tow something you're in luck here too because you've got enough grunt for 20 tons. Yeah. Forty thousand pounds. That's a lot of horses or one huge boat. After all your hard work it's time to hit the trail and have a little fun. He is off road ready with on demand all wheel drive and enough ground clearance to get you into and out of
whatever you can think of. There's even a mossy oak designed Hunter's package available complete with rooftop deer stand and how pounds should you so desire. Motivation for work and play comes via International's own D.T. 466 turbo charged inline 6 cylinder diesel engine. It produces 300 horsepower to get ready for this. Eight hundred and sixty pound feet of torque and drinks from a. Reservoir sized 73 gallon fuel tank filling up is not for the faint of heart. You know this is pretty easy to drive considering its size. It does weigh quite a bit so it's going to take a little longer to stop it. And it is a very wide vehicle. But once you realize those two things and keep them in mind it's actually a piece of cake to drive. Easy to drive hard working and serious looking. That's exactly what International had in mind when they designed really started as a promotional idea. We custom build a truck. And because of the great response from our customers we decided to build it build the real thing. What was great is that we actually built it off an existing platform
so the design work really was done within under a year and we were able to do the modifications to the body and then design the interior. So it was really a fast process. One hundred twenty thousand dollars will get you into your very own S. XTi with over the edges well-equipped model topping out at around one hundred thirty five thousand dollars. I say go for it. You only live once but if the S.A.T. is a little too big for you check out the just released our XTi. It's slightly smaller but just as tough and within a stone's throw of capability of its big brother. So as you can see this is a serious pick up truck and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. But if you'll excuse me I have to go pull a bulldozer out of the mud. Everyone knows Honda for their passenger vehicles and their motorcycles. And when you factor in other products from lawn mowers to ATV it's clear that they're
into just about anything that moves under its own power and sometimes it doesn't even need wheels. Remember this little guy. Say hello to as a mo as a mo which stands for Advanced step in end of Haitian mobility is Honda's groundbreaking effort in advanced robotics. Asimo is the result of nearly two decades of Honda research in trying to duplicate something that we humans take for granted walking as Honda engineers soon found out. Walking is extremely difficult to duplicate in a machine since it is in reality controlled falling. But as a mo walks apart from other robots with a step that is more of a conscious glide than a stomp. We first met as a mo in person in 2002 when he made his American debut at the New York Stock Exchange. He not only wowed the three piece suit set but provided even more proof that Honda is an engineering company first. But that was
three years ago. What has ASM O been up to lately. Well along with its focus on engineering Honda sees itself as a company totally committed to safety. That applies to vehicles and the people they might encounter. So Honda is using as a mo as a teaching tool to instruct children on pedestrian safety through a video DVD teaching aid. Kids learn how to cross the street safely from the world's most advanced humanoid robot. Clearly after his first video as it was ready for the big time and it doesn't get much bigger in the world of entertainment then Disneyland Mickey Mouse himself welcomed as emoted Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration. As a mo as part of an all new robotics in science stage show at the innovations area of the theme park. And say hello to ASM Osho as a mo helps children understand that such simple actions as walking up steps or standing on one foot and even walking backwards require complex efforts by the
body to adjust its center of gravity and not fall to the audience. Asimo is a marvel. This is. Right. When it comes to practical applications Hanta believes that what they are learning from Asimov will one day result in robotic AIDS for the elderly and the disabled. Indeed as a mo shows the promise of the entire field of robotics and how this little guy could change our lives. Time and mileage are adding up for our long term 2005 Toyota Tacoma double cab four by four V-6. It's been with us for eight months in some 13000 miles. This is a mid sized pickup with full size power. The optional two hundred forty five horsepower for leader V-6 is stronger than the 36 is in the full size Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram and bigger trucks would have a hard time matching our Tacoma fuel economy average
of eighteen point poor miles per gallon. Problems continue to be few and minor. The latest are the movable type downs on the cargo rails in the composite bed. The adjustment knobs break easily otherwise the Tacoma is a great example of the modern pickup flexible enough for a weekend personal use but willing to work hard weeks days when it has to. We're really enjoying our 23 foot Winnebago view compact RV. We love it surprisingly spacious interior. That includes a slide out section. The Dodge sprinter chassis with features like ABS brakes and stability control takes the chore out of driving as well. The 4000 miles on its odometer covers both high speed interstates and slow speed mountain road. Still the willing Mercedes Benz 150 cool horsepower 2.7 leader five cylinder turbo diesel engine is returning a pint sixteen point seven miles per gallon.
Now we did hear from Alan Jana Cardew of Florida about a serious steering wheel vibration in their brand new view being a chassis problem their Winnebago dealer couldn't help them and the Dodge dealer had to order a wheel hub from Germany for the repair. But it was eventually fixed under warranty and now all is Show-Me free. We'll warranty our opinions on our Honda Odyssey and Suzuki Reno on the next motor week long term road test update. Owning a Porsche is a car enthusiast dream. But these awesome automobiles have never been cheap and that's why a Porsche introduced the more affordable box to roadster in 1997. But many would be Porsche phile still want a hard top over their heads. So Porsche is bridging the gap between the boxster and the 911. With the all new Kaman asked coupe why not a Porsche for every man every man that loves cars will probably want to own one. Two Porsches legion of fans the 2006 came and this is heaven sent
a 2 seed mid-engine hard top sports car that promises near 9 11 performance yet carries a sticker that's over 12 grand less. True they came in as Coop is based on the soft top box but with the addition of a solid top the chassis is 100 percent more resistant to twist and bending. Yet thanks to careful weight savings they came in this is actually lighter than all boxers except the base manual model. The suspension is also Boxster based but the Macpherson strength layout has been heavily retune to exploit the stiffer Haman's enhanced capabilities. Out of the box came in as wheels are 18 in Talboys wearing wide C rated tires no less than four different lightweight 19 inch rims are optional. The lighter Cayman is also much more powerful than Boxster with a three point four leader Twin Cam flat 6 that mixes and matches parts from both the boxster and the 911. It's 295 horsepower and two hundred fifty one pound feet of torque come from a bored
out box door block with cylinder heads and very old cam system from the 911. The boxer also provides the six speed manual transmission which was modified for quicker getaways with shorter first and second gear ratios up by speed tiptronic automatic is also available. Yet despite its healthy power the Kaman ass carries an almost family sedan level EPA fuel economy rating of 19 city and 27 highway. But stab the gas pedal and the Caymans response is pure sports car. They came in as delivers the kind of wide flat power band that we expect in a Porsche but with much more low end punch than we're used to in a Boxster the gearbox is also tighter with sharp precise shifts especially in the short low gear allowing a came in as to dark from 0 to 60 and 4.8 seconds for a few tenths faster than the Boxster s we tested last year. Handling reminds us very much of the 9 11
coupe with a very stiff chassis exhibiting a distinct rear end weight bias running displays little tendency to push unless driven very hard into tight corners. Their rear end will drift out but in a very smooth predictable manner. The variable ratio steering delivers a prodigious feel. Standard Porsche stability management system an optional Porsche active suspension management deliver even greater control. Taking any dangerous edges off erratic steering and throttle inputs especially in the way. The brakes are big vented in cross drill with four piston model calipers and they give the Kaman true Porsche stopping power. In a nutshell they came in as is indeed an absolute bolt to drive and performance does closely shadow the 911. Yet it maintains the stripped down sports car attitude of the Boxster. It's not bad to look at either. Though some of our staff dislike its tall bubble profile the front exhibits both Boxster and 911 elements but with its
own unique split lower grille and fog lamp treatment the sills sweep up into shark like Side Grill. And the rear end features a movable split rear wing that deploys at 75 miles an hour and long rear deck with a large hatch that opens to a compact cargo area which when combined with the front cargo compartment is a very useful total of fourteen point one cubic feet inside the two place cockpit displays Porsches now excellent bit in finish the look and feel is very much Boxster yet Porsche did very the trim color and details like the steering wheel shape the fairly generous leather trim seats are either six way buckets or optional 12 way sport seats with added lateral support for hard cornering clear gauges are housed in three large pods and include a redundant digital speedo with Trip Computer. But while the center stack is well organized the small switches for stereo and navigation give it an uncharacteristic busy look. Safety features include six
airbags including the Boxster is novel head airbags that deploy upward from the doors and windowsills and all four of fifty nine thousand six hundred ninety five dollars price that's only forty two hundred dollars more than a Boxster S.. But as we mentioned earlier a hefty twelve thousand four hundred dollars less than the base 911 Corera the 2006 came in as is pure Porsche in every way. It is in a word wonderful and provides sports car fanciers with yet another step on the ladder to the exclusive World Cup. ORSZAG. Well I hope you'll join us next week for more of Motor Week.
