world to auto shows in Paris Frankfurt or Tokyo can be very exciting. But as American auto riders we always look forward to seeing what our own car makers have in store each year at Detroit's North American International Auto Show. You know in recent years American designers have produced bold exciting designs that are second to none. Detroit in January may not be high on your must visit list but everyone that is anyone in the automotive world was on hand for the opening of the 2002 North American International Auto Show. While the volume was turned down a bit on traditional hoopla the giant show still had a sense of resurgence and patriotism that was evident from the first event of the day with the pick of the 2002 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards. All six finalists voted on by forty nine top auto writers for American made with the Chevrolet trailblazer taking home the truck honors and the Tennessee built
Nissan Altima capturing the coveted car prize. The patriotic fervor game momentum next with a variety of tantalizing concepts from General Motors. Each was designed with possible production in mind including the body on frame Chevrolet Bel Air. Under its flowing 50s vintage convertible line slides a 21st century 3.5 leader all aluminum Twin Cam 5 cylinder engine that will be used in Chevy's next generation compact pickups Pontiac to a more modern approach to a convertible with its cladding pre-sold STIs roadster developed in record time initial reaction inside GM was so strong that our souls this coupe was also commissioned using mostly off the shelf parts there's 240 horsepower super charged us could become a $25000 reality if the show public agrees it's less likely for show rooms but no less intriguing is the Cadillac CM. This mid-engine V12 super car shapes its carbon fiber panels with Cadillacs new crisp and
styling. The 750 horsepower direct injection 7.5 lieder engine also uses displacement on demand to shut off six cylinders under light load. But GM is most adventurous concept would forever change cars as we know them. The autonomy concept is a hydrogen fuel cell enclosed in a skateboard like chassis. They could accept a variety of plug ins bodies. The idea of build lots of vehicle types from a common chassis to reduce fuel cell costs. This is real science fiction but it may be here sooner than you think. I decidedly youthful theme park the best Chrysler concepts in years following the L.A. Auto Show debut of the Jeep Willy's to Detroit found its way with the Jeep Compass. Think of the cop buzz as an all terrain rally car and with its liberty base chassis and B6 they could also go into production at any time. The son of Power Wagon styling of the Dodge M-80 pickup will likely show up on the next Dakota which so many of the millennial generation craving small pickups with
surface no capabilities M-80 styling could explode the contact truck market. But if we had to pick one concept to drive home it would be the Dodge raiser. We're calling Buckeye British sports cars of the 1960s the minimalist razor has a turbo charge for but no trunk spare tire or radio. Chrysler figures that young buyers that are able to squeeze into the razor will want their own music source no matter what you call them cross-overs segment busters are just tall wagons all wheel drive sport utility derivatives were high on every vehicle maker's wish list where about 18 months away from this intriguing 2004 Chrysler Pacifica V-6 minivan based SUV with the posh of many luxury imports but it two thirds the price Hondas U.S. made 2003 pilot SUV will be here this summer. Like the Acura MDX the pilot is based on the Odyssey minivan a 3.5 leader V-6 with a five speed automatic car standard with available
automatic four wheel drawn seating is for eight with two rows of split folding seats. Decidedly car based is the Volvo X C 90. The brand's first SUV inflates the familiar Volvo wagon styling into a handsome smart and tidy people mover that includes advanced electronic rollover protection and side curtains for all three rows of seats. Power will be the same turbo charged six cylinder used in the ES 80 luxury sedan. When this $35000 suite arrives in dealers late this year. January 2003 will see the arrival of the imported GX 470. One of many premium priced SUV is unveiled at the show using a new body on frame that the a power G x 470 puts 8 seats with an SUV sized between the R x 3 hundred and the L X 470. Mechanics include full time four wheel drive variable ride height and downhill assist control that automatically applies the brakes to slow descents the Lexus will do battle with this
2000 for infinity f x 45. Far less angular than last years concept I shaped up the buy on a cheetah cover seating for 5 every electronic doodad you can think up and out 300 plus horsepower V-8 with all wheel drive while still a concept the Mercedes-Benz vision GST gives us a good hint of the replacement for the M class. The Grand Sports Tourer is dramatic speeding shape will surround a change from body on frame to unit ties chassis seating for 6 the V8 is more all weather mover than all terrain shaker and could give the BMW X5 real competition. Another German crossover concept is this folks wagon Magellan slower and more streetwise than be the obvious forthcoming toerag SUV collaboration with Porsche. The multi-talented Magellan has a rally car wheel arches a side a spacious and versatile cabin. Potential power includes a 275 horsepower w 8 engine. On a smaller scale
the multi dimensional 2003 Suzuki Kerio SFX and sedan. What a ride this spring. With one hundred forty one horsepower on tap the SFX or sports crossover is front or all wheel drive and it follows Toyota's matrix and Pontiac 5 as spicey 5 doors aimed at the youth market while Isuzu prepares for the fall introduction of their GM built ascender SUV. They also showed how much versatility resides in the existing axiom A trio of imaginative concepts included the axiom access to the crew cab pickup access our roadster and a super charged 275 horsepower excess at Subaru continues to show how much mileage they can get out of their outback theme with the 2003 bump. This all wheel drive crossover hits the front cabin of the outback wagon to a short pick up bet similar to Chevy's avalanche. The fireplace interior can be opened to the cargo bay by lowering a panel and raising the rear glass. Baja
arrives in dealers this fall. We doubt you'll see this Acura RDX or the dealer but you may experience its attributes the RDX concept SUV is less about its outrageous styling and more about its innovative interior that includes side folding rear seats and its hybrid all wheel drive power train which includes a gasoline engine to drive the front wheels and electric motors to drive the rear wheel. Speaking of controversial SUV styling and Mitsubishi always comes to mind as in this gasoline electric hybrid SUV cabriolet based on the Sports Utility packed hard top concept shown in Tokyo last fall. The cabriolet trades its top four door tote panels for small item storage. One of the few pure as UVA's introduced in Detroit is the all new 2003 Ford Expedition. The V-8 powered expedition improves ride and handling with the first and appended rear suspension on a full size SUV. Convenience and versatility get a boost
from the first powerful and third row seat. Sigh curtain airbags and an anti skid system will be available when Expedition bows this summer. Detroit also is the first public showing of the all new Land Rover Range Rover this third generation royal SUV as posher than ever and retains its aluminum paneled slab sided shape but the 2003 edition smooths out journeys for the first time you get a body frame for Will independent suspension and up BMW four point four leader a V-8 US sales begin in June with a blue blooded $70000 admission price. But where are the new cars if this new car show. Well we'll show you in a few minutes when we return to the 2002 North American International Auto Show. Do antilock brakes always reduce your stopping distance in emergency situations. A new government study concludes that except on loose surfaces like sand and snow all panic stops can be shorter. When will the lock break then without
shorter on what pavement. And shorter on dry pavement. Remember ABS works best when you stop the brake pedal stay on the brake pedal and steer where you want to go. Coming up a cornucopia car. Now lets stop by for a visit with our top tech Pat Goss this week he brings us his version of Tool Time. John this time we're going to talk about some products that can really save a lot of time money and aggravation. Here we have an assortment of things from the auto trans company. They specialize in units that can be added to automatic transmissions to make them shift better to make the torque converter clutch work more effectively and well. One of the most important ones is right here this is the recalibrate or now the recalibrate or is used on cars when you change the rear end gear ratios or you make a tremendous change in the size of the tires and wheels.
Now why would that be necessary. Well modern automotive computers can sense things like this and they can also throw your automatic transmission into a limpin mode. So you've got seconds. That's it. Well the recalibrated will recalibrate everything so that it matches the new gearing and the transmission shifts properly. Now here we have the snap on SMART data system. And actually what it is is a personal digital assistant. Pretty clever idea because it has tons of information in it is stored on replaceable cartridges that go into the back of it gives you information about anything you might want to know about specifications component locations and so on for automobile. This is of course a professional tool for technicians but it gives you a wealth of information. It's like having a full fledged computer right in your pocket. Now here's something very Mundine.
But no tool box whether it's a do it yourself tool box or professional tool box should be with out hop rivet gun. So all kinds of things on a daily basis that you'll find that work well. Trying to hold them together with blind pop rivets. They're very inexpensive and the uses are almost limitless. Our last item is the Phoenix injector Phoenix injector can be used to transfer fluids out of containers out of reservoirs and so on. Or to put it back in can also be used to bleed brakes as we're demonstrating here. Now the benefit to that is that it's a whole lot safer on the brake system on a modern car to draw the fluid out of the system rather than use the pedal to pump the fluid out of the system. Very effective both for do it yourself and professional technicians are going to comment right to me.
Buying a car is a process that can be both daunting and enjoyable and it can really get tricky if you have your heart set on one particular make and model of a classic or collectable car. Well this week out on the high road pricing Hans takes us to one Mecca for
fulfilling automotive dreams. But like so many worthy endeavors in life he found it takes preparation persistence and at least a little green. You know there's a lot of ways of buying a collectors car enthusiast magazines newspapers even e-commerce. But one of the most exciting ways is a car auction. You have two million dollars one of the finest of the lot of. Opportunity of a long time. Car auctions are a lot of fun but you haven't seen anything until you've been to a cruise auction. This is. The. Part a three ring circus and park Las Vegas its high rolling showmanship at its finest. With.
The annual Labor Day Cruise auction in Auburn Indiana more than lives up to its reputation. You. Can either. Well our first sale we had here which was about thirty one to two years ago we had 68 cars and people said it was the largest auction in the world. Today we have about 5000 cars here Purcell and now it really is the largest in the world docks and starting a Dairy Queen parking lot across the street from the from the Auburn core Duesenberg festival where you know the classics we have and takes we have muscle cars that sports cars. They have military vehicles mobile homes prototypes you name it they probably have it. The cruise Labor Day option really does seem to have something for everybody whether we're after a whole car a piece of a car or a piece from the stout you you're bound to find something you want to take home. I would like to be the first to file. Possibly the hothouses and it's almost like a sporting Mexico you match
two competitive people up in boxing there or any other sport and there's always a winner. I enjoy watching betters some betters will jump and shout. Some 77. Other bettors are real quiet. They just want to wiggle their ear wait there I am home home home home with a lot of people that would hesitate to come to a collector car auction. Because they might think they're going to bid on the car they scratch their nose or or scratch Cruise auction officials carefully watch the crowd and believe me they know a scratch from a bid so nobody goes home with a collector car. They didn't know they were bidding on but you do go home with a lot of great memories because the labor day cruise auction is a mecca for some of the finest cars and collectibles you could ever ask for. It gives the people opportunity to get together congregate and celebrate the hobby. Looks like this weekend is all about 150 to 200000 people. The best electric car people are nicer and you couldn't ask for a more pleasant more
American town to visit. It's safe friendly and full of automotive history. Robin is it as a great community it is rich with automotive heritage a lot of people don't know it but there were 13 different makes of automobiles here and of course Martin Duesenberg the most famous and we've been part of protecting and preserving that heritage and we're building a new museum here and we hope to have six or seven use Iam so this will be a final destination for people to come and spend several days visiting museums and not several hours crews remain steadfastly true to his home town of Auburn Indiana. And he remains humble about a success. My father used to say we had to expand the business to feed the family because there were seven of us children and now we have nieces and nephews and grandkids and we have four generations of auctioneer's. So our business had to get better in order to feed the family. It's been an interesting experience. And
when we started we never knew it would end up this way. We're grateful for what's happened and we thank all the people that supported us because without all the customers it going to happen. Labor Day weekend in Auburn Indiana is a blast. You might just buy a car. Day in and day out we've come to depend on our 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan with all wheel drive. One of the primary workhorses of our fleet. We're glad to say it's holding up well after 11 months in eighteen thousand four hundred fifty five mile. Fuel economy has been very steady now at ninety two point four miles per gallon and the only recent malady is a noisy power steering pump. One staffer rode. It's easy to see why this is a top seller. An excellent ride very comfortable and versatile interior and the all wheel drive gives added security. The three point eight liter V-6 is also gutsy with good passing ability
and a little on even on power delivery. Still Grand Caravan has more of what people buy minivans for than you'll find in any other box. The two box shape is used by the Mazda Tribute and this is Suki Xcel 7 both up for review on our next motor week long term road test update. Now let's push the pedal to the metal with more auto show from Motown. So where are all the new cars at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. Well truth be told new production cars were scarce at this year's Detroit event that made the Infinity e.g. 35 intro a big deal in showrooms this fall. This BMW 3 Series fighter supports tall smiling over a well-balanced rear drive chassis lightweight aluminum suspension a 260 horsepower V-6 by speed manual mode automatic and all the luxury infinity is famous for. Detroit also saw the introduction of the 2003 model Roddy coupe this
hand-crafted $83000 sports cars be eight channels three hundred ninety horsepower through a manual six speed gearbox with available Formula 1 style steering wheel shift pedals. After a 12 year US absence look for the coupe to follow the monster Audi spider at Ferrari dealers in April. And this may be our only look at the reborn 4G 40. A modernized concept of the 60s vintage Lamont's winter that is so far only a super charged 500 horsepower be a morale builder for bored employees as the company begins its intended goal celebration. On the other hand you'll see more of this Saab 9 3 x crossover coupe with rally car styling and turbo charged B6 power to match this concept shows that Saab is prepared to enter the all wheel drive arena soon after the redesigned 9 3 sedan arrives this summer appearing to be cut from similar cloth as the Italian design Toyota CTX. This high powered front drive concept crossover coupe may foretell the approach Toyota will
take with its new youth oriented brand that reportedly will shun traditional dealerships for internet ordering while the opening of the Los Angeles Auto Show beat Detroit last few days the most important new vehicles from L.A. also made the trek east. California based Lincoln showed this Continental concept which reaffirms their new old styling direction. Lincoln's answer to the expedition the all new 2003 navigator also found on the left coast. Navigator competed for attention with another new full sized premium SUV the Hummer H2 in showrooms this summer. The H2 is based on GMC big pickup and will be powered by a six leader V8. Meanwhile dodges L-A efforts rightly focused on the California youth culture with the 2003 SRT for this 205 horsepower turbo charged Neon is the first of a new PTO performance line from dodge that will include the 2003 Piper SRT 10 and 2004 ram SRT 10.
God says those eight point three liter APTN ran with 24 inch tires will outrun Ford F-Series lightning with a 0 to 60 time of 5 seconds flat. But if you want a real Brawn try the Ford F-350 Tonka this grown up toy truck is a not so subtle hint of what F series pick ups will look like after their rescan in 2004. But it's new 6 leader 32 Balbi a turbo diesel will be available and Super Duty pickup by this time next year. And innovative hydraulic launch assist system stores close down energy and reuses it during startup acceleration. Ford thinks he could improve big truck city fuel economy by 25 percent top luxury never look so good. But a truck never looked cooler than the 2004 Chevrolet as has all. This former concept retro roadster pickup starts limited production early next year. The power will ensure owners of this hard top convertible get plenty of exposure to the elements and
gawkers alike. Now if you think minivans are passe. Get a load of the Nissan Quest concept. This total rethink the basic minivan includes Renault inspired styling with a sexy shoulder lining class that follows the front fenders as they sweep down to the road. The powered Greer lift gate is hinged so it can be opened in tight spaces. Nissan says this basic Chauvin is very close to the production class that arise in the 2004 model year and that's it with the 2002 North American International Auto Show. While sales could cool in the next year the atmosphere and Cobo Hall was still warm and friendly with great hope for the future of the automobile in America. It's getting close to that time of the year when we vote for our annual motorway drivers Choice Awards but this year we invited you to cast your vote for what you think is the best vehicle of the year.
