Hello and welcome again to motorway. We're glad to have you with us here and in year out the BMW M5 as Rangers motor Wake's favorite sports sedan. It's amazing combination of four door luxury two door handling and super car power. Make it an equal in the world of high performance today. So can this new generation 2006 BMW M5 top a car that was already at the top of its class.
Few cars have ever excited the motor we test crew like the BMW M5 So it was an excited gang of motor heads that anxiously awaited the arrival of the all new 2006 M5. And from the moment that it arrived everyone agreed that it is one of the most stunning four doors in BMW history. With its deep brown hugging bodywork and big 19 inch Castillo wheels. The way this in 5 presents an image of serious aggression and backs it up with one of the most potent engines to ever reside under the hood of a four door sedan. That engine is BMW 5 leader dual cam 40 belt the 10 press the console's power button and it delivers a stunning 500 horsepower and 380 three pound feet of torque. Don't press it and you're limited to a still impressive 400 horsepower. Output. It all hits the rear wheels through a super sophisticated seven speed sequential manual
gearbox steering wheel pedal shifters are provided for manual gear changes but it also functions as a full automatic and there are 11 different shift programs from commuter mild to all out sport. The super stealth 5 series chassis is supported by a straightforward MacPherson strut front and multi link rear suspension but that is in turn supported by BMW as electronic damper controls Plus a very forgiving electronic stability control system and all season traction control. With all systems engaged in their most aggressive modes the M5 smokes its way to 60 in only 4.4 seconds. The quarter mile blast by a twelve point seven seconds at 117 miles per hour. That's impressive even considering that the maximum acceleration launch control function included on Euro spec cars still victim to liability concerns here. This huge velocity comes despite the fact that the Wii tennis fairly soft off idle really coming to life above 3000 rpm and building rapidly from there.
Ships are fast but very abrupt and both manual and automatic moves. Of course we knew that the M5 would be fast but with its weight now up to four thousand twelve pounds we wondered if it could still close tackle the corners. So we hit the bends of Savannah George's Roebling road Raceway to find out. From the first turn of the wheel you feel the extra weight but also the M5 still perfect balance. We selected sport the most aggressive of three suspension modes for our laps combined with a fast variable ratio steering. Now with two levels of assist directional changes were lightning quick even though the car's half pushes the front end harder in tight turns than in earlier model. But throw this M5 into a long pass sweeper and the car responds with tons of grip and rock solid stability. Stability Control and BMW M variable differential lock. Keep the tail planted even when you're overly aggressive with a V tense prodigious torque. While the massive cross drilled breaks with two piece compound
rotors will haul the car down from 60 in a short 120 feet and down from track speeds with power to spare. So even if it doesn't feel quite as nimble as before. Overall the new M5 is an incredibly capable long fast rise will also be in the lap of luxury not found in the previous EMF on the cabin is packed with comfort and convenience with a long options list. Our favorite extra was the multi-function active seat system which automatically tightens outside support in response to cornering forces. Followed closely by the optional Head Up Display. The clean Teutonic dash carries both dual zone automatic climate controls and a logic 7 surround sound audio system adjusted like many other functions by BMW II drawing and infotainment control system that still splits the motor week staff. On the other hand we all love the new M drive which allows the driver to select their favorite settings for everything from power to seat position with a touch of one
button on the steering wheel rear seating is roomy for two but the seat back doesn't fold. Not really a problem however since the trunk space is a sizeable 14 cubic feet. But that number pales in comparison to the numbers on the sticker base price for the M5 is eighty one thousand eight hundred ninety five dollars. With all options on board our test car comes to a stunning ninety four thousand one hundred sixty five dollars. There's no doubt that the 2006 BMW M5 is powerful capable and sophisticated but it may take time for fans of its lighter more nimble predecessors to warm to its more substantial feel. We still believe the M5 is tops in its rarefied class yet that class is showing some maturity. But regardless of how you split hairs the 2006 BMW M5 is an amazing automobile. Coming out. Time now for a stop by Goss's garage Let's see what high performance
car care Pat has for us this week. John we're not likely to see gasoline prices like this in our lifetime again. Anyway not only have gas prices changed dramatically over the years so have the gasolines themselves. You see the federal government is very concerned with the environment and they have mandated over the years that certain chemicals be put into gasoline to make them burn better for a cleaner environment. Well that's a good thing but it has a downside. Some of these chemicals well they tend to leach out and they form deposits inside the engine like on this valve. You know this big mound of crud here that can affect performance it can affect fuel economy and it can even affect emissions and that all comes from gasoline should look more like this valve over here no deposits at all. Now what can you do to prevent that. Well you can use a fuel injection cleaner on a regular
basis follow the directions. Your better ones you can probably go longer between applications but they're going to cost more. Now one big thing to remember here more is not better and could be damaging to your vehicle. So use the directions follow them. All right. But there's something else that is new that you're apt to run across you may see on a pump. The term top tier Well top tier is a type of gasoline that was developed by four companies Honda Toyota General Motors and BMW. They were aware of the problems with the deposits and they said if we set a standard for these fuels we can do away with these problems in the fuel just has more additives it's like the fuel injection cleaner helps keep these deposits under control. So if you see the top tier on the pump it means that it's a higher detergent gasoline.
And if the price is appropriate you don't want to pay too much here. Then it would be a good choice. General Motors has even come out with a technical service bulletin such as we have here that explains this to technicians. So the technician should be aware of it. And remember that to qualify for top tier the additives have to be in all three grades not just in the premium grade so you want forced into buying premium for your 87 octane car. If you have a question or comment write to me the address is Motor Week or use Mills my 2 1 1 1 7. To Serve and Protect. That's the job of every police officer. But often that job requires a high speed game of cat and mouse on the streets. So who trains law enforcement to drive safely and professionally and leave any street race or instinct behind. Well we asked our Henrico pads just for the
facts and as usual he went over the edge to check it out. Police officers can encounter some tricky and potentially dangerous situations when they're behind the wheel. And the best way for them to protect themselves and the public is to know exactly what to do in the blink of an eye. And that takes training. And for many police officers in Maryland the training takes place here at the Maryland police and correctional for missions driver training facility in Sykesville conceived in the late 80s and completed in 1998. The facility grew out of a statewide need for a motor vehicle training arena for law enforcement and correctional officers. More than just an opportunity to learn how to drive faster pursuits. The program offers students the chance to hone their skills at car control on a closed course without worrying about the hazards of driving public roads. Not that. Driving curriculum at the facility doesn't relate the real thing because it
does downtown every stop sign railroad crossing and traffic light. This is real as it gets without real crooks. Now leave no administrator at the facility. Outline the program to me and explain why what it teaches students is so important. Majority of officers rarely need to use their handgun or weapon. OK but they have to use his vehicle every day. The train starts out with classroom instruction and then proceeds into skill development for close quarters operations. We have a course that deals with urban settings. Like the residential street complexes business environment and then we have another range that is like an open interstate. Maine State Highway. Then we can move on to skid control techniques. The program also employs the use of real time driving simulators to help with training. Yours truly even got to be the rabbit for a class of University of Maryland police academy recruits. And I'll tell you they enjoyed chasing me a little too much in my opinion.
Vehicle condition inmate wins are also touched because a well running police car is a crime fighting police car. The instructors that do the teaching bring not only book smarts to the program but years of on duty street smarts as well something invaluable for the students. I'm very fortunate here with a background experience as truckers I have I have instructors that have retired from metropolitan police departments and come here to work. I've have instructors that work and county and state forces that have of retired and come here. Tom Coburn hour is just one of the instructors that brings his experience from the street to the program. We have over 40 half miles of track here and the places that we're. At. We've had instructors come up from North Carolina but most recently we had guest instructors from Alabama here for our last instructor school. So the word goes you know out I think that we're pretty good place to learn. High speed high stress and in some situations a serious amount of fun.
But just ask any student how they feel about what they're learning. And you begin to understand how important it is republic safe for a while both of our weapons can take out one person a car can take up by people who will drive it safely and that's it's where the burial have to happen so this training is very important to us. We needed to get out of the way we could function fully or so as police officers need to be for the community. Over 2000 students a year attend the program. That's a lot of training and a lot of competent police officers hitting the streets. If I had to describe the program offered by administrative leave no and his instructors in one word that word would be comprehensive. And that's a good thing because that's exactly what it has to be. When a police officer is out on the road they can expect to perform anything from traffic stops ties speed chases mud with the help of programs like this. They'll know exactly what to do. The sun has a solid winner and their all new Pathfinder. It outsells its
predecessor by a wide margin and is easily Nissan's most popular SUV. Our pathfinder in SE off road tram has also been a popular choice with our staff racking up nearly 18000 miles in 11 months. We've had two minor problems. First Early on we noticed wheel vibration at highway speeds as if the tires were out of balance and second the driver's left rear power windows which went dead. Our dealer fix both promptly. The 270 horsepower for leader V-6 also responds promptly and is delivering sixteen point four mpg that average has been almost the same since day one. And while typical for a body on frame SUV it really hurts at the pump. Drives long and short the Pathfinder rewards with a sturdy ride find comfort and exceptional functionality. Plus when the going gets tough the Pathfinders Hi-Lo four wheel drive system makes it almost unstoppable even with a tap at tight. It's a great mid size issue
v.. We currently have 200 vehicles in our long term fleet. There's ATA cx minivan which after a year is ending its Stay with us and this Honda Civic elex which is just beginning. After 27000 miles we continue to be impressed with the Odyssey's outstanding combination of comfort utility and ease of driving. Problems including the faulty power side door and a blown strut so the hatch wouldn't stay up. But the Odyssey is powerful 244 horsepower V-6 never missed a beat and even returned SUV beating economy. I'm twenty one point eight mpg. We still firmly believe it is the top minivan and winning our motor week drivers choice award. Confirms it. Likewise our best small car and best of the Year awards mean we're pretty committed to the Honda Civic too from commuter sedan to performance coupe to hybrid four door. There is something in the civic lineup for all. Plus it is more style than any civic before it. We'll
see if our high expectations are rewarded over the next year and we'll see if this Toyota Tacoma and this Porsche Boxster meet our high expectations on the next motor week long term road test update. This C-Class is a mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz lineup and for 2008 an all new C-Class will hit the streets. The first to arrive will be the C-Class sedan shown here during cold weather testing which will debut in the spring of 2007. The new four door will be slightly larger than its predecessors and much sport here styling cues from the sea are evident in the crisp character lines along the flanks that boulder look carries over to the C-Class wagon which will follow the sedan to showrooms in six to 12 months. Power will come from new V-6 and V-8 engine which boasts direct fuel injection and an electronic valve train that does away with
conventional camshafts. The most potent engine will be a 500 horsepower super charged V-8 in the AC 55 AMG the new C-Class will be available in both rear and all wheel drive with coupe and convertible versions to follow over the next couple of years. In the world of high performance motorcycles the letters are synonymous with speed. Few motorcycles have ever matched the Suzuki GSX RS dominance above street and race track. And now the entire history of this legendary motorcycle is available in Suzuki GSX are a legacy of performance by Mark. Cooke. An experienced and respected Moto JOURNALIST Mr Cook delivers her chronological guide to the GSX RS development from its conventional G.S. series predecessors through the groundbreaking light weight design of the first GSX are today's all conquering GSX are
1000. It's packed with excellent photos and tons of technical data. The copy does sometimes read like a Suzuki sales brochure but that doesn't stop this from being a book that every fan of this mighty motorcycle can enjoy. Kenya is among the small lot of Korean auto makers that if changed the mindset of American consumers about how much quality they could expect for a value price. Now the original 2002 Sedona minivan played a big part in doing that. He is first U.S. minivan quickly gave chase to the industry's best. Well now for 2006 there's an all new Sedona bigger and more powerful. This Sedona packs more family pleasing punch than ever. But is this redo enough to make a minivan leader. It's not easy to move to the front of the minivan segment but even at first glance it's
clear that the second generation 2006 key is Sedona is a major improvement over its predecessor with a longer wider stance the all new Sedona provides about 50 percent more passenger room than last year. Yet designers did not overdose on the bigger is better theme. One hundred eighteen point nine inch wheelbase and 202 inch over a link are within range of class leaders. Exterior sheet metal follows the traditional conservative to box formula with clean flanks in a slightly sloping roof line are top level grade test vehicle rides on 17 inch alloy wheels with 235 60 all weather tires and standard tire pressure monitoring like a Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna the sliding side doors now include power down windows while the Xs power package adds power assist to the sliders as well as a power rear hatch. Like the styling the Sedona drive train looks pretty typical of three point eight leader V-6. But this is a premium twin can variable valve timing engine
similar to the one used in Hyundai's flagship a Cirrus sedan that yields two hundred forty four horsepower and class leaving two hundred fifty three pound feet of torque. Made it to a smooth high speed automatic transaxle the Sedona powers to 60 miles per hour in a fine eight point three seconds and through the quarter mile and sixteen point five seconds at 85 mph. There is even a manual shifter mode for those who fantasize about a minivan racing series. The drive train also features EPA mileage ratings of 25 highway. Are mixed test loop delivered a reasonable 20 miles per gallon but it is interior a minute that make or break any family and Sedona delivers with much improved levels of fit finish and value. The airy 7 passenger cabin has a handsome tasteful look with quality Plastics a nice four wood trim occupant safety is top notch thanks the standard front side impact plus side curtain airbags for all three rooms model was
complete with standard 8 way power adjustments for the driver seat plus optional leather upholstery with front seat heat. The luxury package also includes power adjustable pedals but convenience features like a folding front row table conversation mirror keeping track of the kids and a total of 14 cup holders are all standard. The second captains chairs flip and fold for third row access or can be removed entirely. The process is not as convenient as Chrysler's fold into the floor seats but it's no worse than other competitors. Today's families expect personalized climate controls and Sedona has fans and controls for all three rows of seats. The optional luxury package also includes automatic temperature setting premium entertainment equipment package includes an AM FM Cassette with CD MP 3 player and six hundred sixty watt infinity surround sound system. Second and third row passengers can enjoy a DVD player with a big screen and remote control.
Speaking of the third row the expected fold into the floor 60 40 split is heavier and doesn't work as smoothly as on the Odyssey or Sienna but it does the job. The cargo space is thirty two point two cubic feet behind the third. Eighty point one cubic feet behind the second and 140 1.5 with seats out of the way handling course we found the Sedona to be competent if ordinary suspension and slow steering are offset by standard electronic stability control that keeps it on a stable and safe. But after all it is a Mini Mini Cooper. Breaking was short and secured was stopped from 60 averaging a very good 120 feet Horwill disc abs and electronic brake distribution are all standard. All in all quite a lot of minivans starting in only twenty three thousand six hundred sixty five dollars for the elex grade and twenty six thousand two hundred sixty five dollars for the up level. And in our test fans options and the sticker totals are still
modest thirty one thousand three hundred sixty five dollars. Given that this also includes key is exceptional 10 year 100000 mile power train warranty. We find the Sedona to be an excellent minivan value when introduced for 2002 the first Sedona signal they keel was much more than just a small car builder. Now with solid engineering great safety and versatility. The 2006 Sedona puts Kiya among the leaders and a very demanding minivan segment.
