This time on motor with a super new Jaguar. The automobile has art and Rice family transport from Honda to come drive with us next. TV's automotive magazine. Your host for Motor Week John Davis. Hello and welcome again to motor week. We're glad to have you with us. Since their introduction in 1968 Jaguars x J series sedans have personified four wheeled luxury. But like the company that built them the X Jays have had their share of ups and downs for 1995 however there is a new x J. Now we brought you our first
impressions of the new cat a few weeks ago at the X Jays European debut. There we found it to be a car that looks to the past for inspiration and to the resources of Jaguars current owner Ford for the future. Well now that new x J is here and things are definitely looking up. Hand up is definitely where Jaguar is headed and production quality customer satisfaction and sales of 995 line up including the likes of this super charged X Jr. sedan such good news should continue. The x Jr. is the first super charged Jag in the company's 72 year history. It's the performance model among the four sedan range and the most scarce accounting for only 3 percent of total x J production. Jaguar chain some 100 internal parts of last year's Four leader dual overhead cam 24 valve inline 6. Only after this beefing up when they add an intercooler super charger. The resulting three hundred twenty two horsepower and three hundred
seventy eight pound feet of torque provide what Jaguar calls refined power. Jaguar had US buyers in mind in picking super charging over turbo charging super charging provides more gutsy off the line throttle response. Something we Yanks hanker for most and we put it to good use at our home town Test Track where our rush of low end torque. Four thousand two hundred pound XDR from zero to 60 in just seven seconds flat. And our hefty can't leap through the quarter mile and fifteen point two seconds finishing at an impressive 95 mph. Extremely smooth power delivery is insured by a four speed automatic transmission traction control is standard despite its weight. The x Jr. sped through our slalom course like a far trimmer feline. The speed sensitive steering especially tuned for the X Jr as is the double wishbone in cool spring. All independent suspension. Lots of credit for the X JR superb handling prowess must go to the sticky Perelli. He 0 tires this
45 series rubber is on 17 inch sports styled diamond polished alloy wheels exclusive to the X Jr.. And quad geometry helps maintain X take them hosiery and harsh maneuvers including emergency braking within it. Dance Tevis ABS system our chorus stop from 60 in a short one hundred twelve feet on average. But there's nothing average about the new Jag inside or out. The classic styling borrows heavily from the series three sedans of the early 1980s headlights are again round and their contours tunnel into the fenders. The screen pattern grille is the X Jr's alone grille frame bumpers and side moldings are body colored and the door mirrors are redesigned. The classic Jaguar hood ornament officially known as the leaper returns on American X days as a $200 option. Jaguar interiors exude old world luxury and like the rest of the car has been thoroughly updated rather than completely redesign the shallow grained Conneally leather feels softer. While the one
piece molded carpeting improves sound deadening the extra yards wood trim is a grey stained maple. Other extras get burled walnut the XDR steering wheel mixes both wood and the other dual airbags are standard but only extra produced after January will also have an in dash or glovebox. The supportive Well bolstered bucket seats have the same anti-submarine in feature as Ford's contour world car the driver faces a full complement of analog gauges. A digital odometer and enough warning lights to start a video arcade. Power seat controls have been repositioned for easier access. There's a three position memory that also adjusts the tilt and telescoping steering column. The 240 watt sound system has both cassette and CD capability which here has been enlarged and simplified. Ditto the new heating and air conditioning system which now has much improved airflow and a digital control panel three adults can fit on the contoured rear bench seat
but not when the huge armrest is down. Overall we'd like a tad more leg room trunk spaces also smallish eleven point one cubic feet but it's wide flat and left over is extremely low Jaguar prices aren't low but then no premium luxury cars it is a super charged extra day or less for $65000. Even since the average annual income of Jaguar owners is over $200000 such a sticker shouldn't be too shocking and for their money they'll be getting the most sophisticated luxurious and well liable Jaguar yet. Indeed the legend of the big cat is alive and well and thanks to a judicious infusion by Ford It has all of its nine lives left. You know buying a used car can be a risky proposition especially if you live in a part of
the country with severe weather. Fortunately we have motor weeks master technician Pat Goss and he's here to help viewers everywhere avoid making some very costly mistakes. John have I got a deal for you I've got this incredibly low mileage exceptionally clean beautiful late model Jeep. You know the price is right too. How many times have you heard statements like then. You see it written on the windows of vehicles you see it in the newspaper you hear it on the radio all of these things talking about these exceptionally clean late model low mileage cars. Well some of them are exactly that. But because of weather conditions that we've had over the last couple of years you could be looking at something that isn't as clean as you might think it is. See there are a lot of flood damaged cars out there these days. What could you do that will tell whether or not a car has had flood damage. Well some secret weapons a mirror and a flashlight. When you go look at the car you take the
mirror and go underneath the seats and you shine the flashlight in there to see exactly what's going on and what you're looking for is any signs of rust serious rust that is built up on the hardware underneath the seat in the springs in the brackets and so on. Well if you don't find any that doesn't necessarily mean that there is no damage. What you need to do next is to look at all the little cracks and crevices throughout the vehicle. Look behind by the side molding look around the cracks in the upholstery in the doors. All sorts of areas like that. You also want to have a technician run the car up in the air. Look for silt. So what you're looking for and you're looking for silt that has built up in the frame or in any of the cavities in the body structure of the vehicle. So just like mud that's what's left as the result of flood damage. Also look up under the dash. Look for any signs of rust on computer boxes and brackets and bolts and so on. If you see rust it probably means that the vehicle has been flood damaged. Walk away from it.
If you still haven't found anything feel with the carpeting back in the recesses under the seats and so on the carpeting is wet. Walk away from it. If the carpeting isn't wet. Try to find an area where you can lift the carpeting up then take ahold of the fabric underneath this padding and many times you'll find that even though the carpeting is completely dry the padding will be saturated with water. Again walk away from the car there are plenty of good used cars out there now. If you want to be extra sure about what you're buying. Well you could get a report on the card such as I have here. This one is from Carfax. They are in Virginia and they'll tell you whether or not the title has ever been messed with. As far as the car is concerned it's a good service to look into and if you'd like more information about that service or you have a question or a comment write to me. If I use your letter on the air I'll send you a motor week T-shirt. The address is Motor Week always Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7.
Little red car of the week is a genuine 1947 Willys Jeep. It was restored by Gerry Molson of Brasilia California. So many good color photos of your car of the week candidate to Motor Week Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. It's the dream of every artist to capture the true essence of their subject be it in paint or stone or even on film. But some would argue that no static medium and fully capture the sound and fury of a race card full song high road reporter Craig Singh hoss once agreed with that until he met a man who changed his mind forever. The 1991 have a beach club were telling all was taken by storm one
sculptor Dennis Hoyt unveiled into the night his magnificent glory time. They were flabbergasted by the expressiveness of which hoped it would but they hadn't seen anything yet. At the 1993 unveiling of the ragged edge the automotive art world realized that Dennis point was hell bent on racing to the very limits of his imagination. The only question is can we keep up with him. My mind's eye I see sometimes so fast I can't. It gets very frantic I work at a fever pitch. See when I get an idea I gotta follow through with it almost before disappears. Put a lot into it I'm all for. To try to get a lot out of it. Captures. The brilliance people best worth was concerned the fact that it might be too
sensational. I reckon. That he thought. The idea of us vaporizing giving a sense translucency really intrigues me. Dennis Waites latest creation is a tribute to Formula 1 champion field here in this piece we combines the wildly imaginative with the incredibly realistic. Part of the fascination for what each work is all the amazing detail particularly because nearly all of it is made of wood. He attention to detail here when they sing. Well with a piece like this it's very literal. The client and for the most part people really demand that you have the detail with him. It's only with the. More abstract. Things that you can become a
little freer. The advisory he had on wasn't very large it was only about two and a half to three inches because at the time he was wearing his goggles also. Top of the engine is going to show through these holes. And they have to be fitted in from the bottom. Phil Hill acted as consultant for part of the sculpture giving weight advice for some of the finer details. It's interesting as fierce competitors you have to be to compete in the Formula One race there's a certain sweetness about his face that's yeah I don't know why he would take me. I noticed that when I talk to him he was up here a couple weeks ago helping with this and really was terrific giving me details. I particularly like to sketch his comments to me. Dennis could you please have more hair this looks like Sterling's airline at the time I thought it was.
It was really terrific outside of the I think. The most important thing. Would be. Fill him full appreciation. This man took an automobile that by today's standards put on the scene it was hard to get him and drive at a speed that he did and that's what I'm trying to convey a sense of rather dizzy like to be in a car with to feel hill driving up to 200 miles an hour. While crowd covers the more artistic side of the automotive scene this week Lisa Barrow takes care of the industry side. Here she is with all the latest Motor News. In the news this week is Land Rovers first really new Range Rover in 25 years although at first glance you might not think so decidedly against revolutionary styling changes Landrover merely softened the Range Rovers existing look while retaining its
straight accent lines wrap over hood black roof pillars and split tail gate. Although it looks smaller at the new Range Rover 4.0 SC is longer taller and wider than the old county long new base model which means more shoulder head and leg room inside. Combine them with a traditional leather and trim and much improved ergonomics and the Range Rover is a viable alternative to a luxury car but no luxury car could negotiate terrain like this. The new Range Rover retains its unsurpassed off road ability now powered by a revised bore later 190 worst power aluminum V8. Expect prices around $55000 when the Range Rover 4.0 as he arrives here in late January. And that's it for this week's Motor News. Despite all its success in the US family car market Honda has been criticized for not building a minivan or offering a V-6 engine for its top
selling accord. Well for 1995 Honda has finally responded with the all new Odyssey minivan and a gutsy V-6 motor for the Accord. And guess what. They're both full of surprises. But if you were expecting Honda's Odyssey minivan to look a lot different than the norm you'll be disappointed. It's a fairly typical two box design looking a lot like the Mercury Villager and Nissan Quest. However being a Honda the real surprises come in the details. The sharply slow run in is lower and rounder than competitors making the Odyssey somewhat easier to maneuver in tight spaces. The eye sees overall height is also quite low meaning that its garage will even when cargo is left on the dealer installed luggage rack. But here is the biggest difference between Odyssey and other front wheel drive minivan. There is no sliding door. The right side rear door is hinged like a car. And so is the rear door on the left. Hondas research indicates that most buyers
want minivans with a back door on the driver's side. Both Chrysler and GM will offer on their next generation minivan. Standard auto CLX seating is for seven with a split bench seat that easily folds or two easy to remove. Captain's chairs are optional and standard on an odyssey. Under the single piece rear hatch is a long tall and slightly narrow cabin. Note the spare tire is mounted inside that sets the stage for the Odyssey's cleverest creature. The rear bench seat can be quickly dropped into a floor well more instantaneous room for a bulky loads. Passenger loads are safe in the Odyssey with dual airbags side door beams or bumpers. A heavy duty Hatch latch and 4 wheel disc ABS brakes Odyssey is built on a strengthened accord chassis so not surprisingly major mechanical bits. Are virtually identical. To the Alex accords to point to leader 16 Balfour generates 140 horsepower.
Highway cruising is effortless. Although odysseys four cylinder works mighty hard on hills or when heavily loaded. Also like a Ford The Odyssey has a double wishbone suspension at each corner. A. First for a minivan. All contribute to the Odyssey's other standout feature the most car like ride and handling of any minivan cornering Roland nosedive or will control prices for Odyssey should start in about $24000 when sales begin in January. At that time we'll also have lots more to say about Odyssey. However we'll already say that we hope Honda decides to put a V-6 in the Odyssey. While its innovative design is still correct. After all. Odyssey is based on the board and the Accord just got a V-6 finally. Yes it too was a long time coming. We can tell you it was well worth the wait. Under a gas strut supported hood that is about three inches longer than other records.
There's a new version of the 2.7 leader V-6 that powered the first generation Acura Legend attached to a new four speed automatic 170 horsepower V-6 kind of pokes the Accord from yeoman family sedans into the realm of mere luxury cars. It gets there fast to zero to 60 in seven point seven seconds for almost two seconds faster. The four cylinder of. The suspension has also been tweaked to carry the V-6 accords extra 144 pounds. Anti-lock brakes are standard on both the 20 $2300 elex V-6 and the twenty four thousand nine hundred fifty dollars. E x v 6 with the top model also gaining a sunroof and leather interior. Like the Odyssey the Ford V-6 gets our full road test treatment soon. But it's obvious that Honda is moving to broaden its product lineup cementing their role as an automaker that designs cars with Americans as primary buyers. We just hope the next pleasant surprise happens quickly. One of the most popular segments on motor wake is Craig Singh Haas out on the high road.
It's been almost eight years since Gregg first set out on his travels and that endless gray ribbon has led him from New York City streets all the way to the Baja desert. While he's seen more of this great land than most of us see in a lifetime. But it wasn't until he took a special journey through America's heartland that he knew what the highroad was really all about. A relative that. Route 66. This road is where someone in search of their dream. And others left their dreams behind. If there's a high wage the American dream this is it. And where there are dreams. And ever to believe there are you working hard. But something about this for you Americans by the
thousands to build a life. To Leave the past behind. To find the American dream. And somehow down through the years. This road became the destination itself. People came just to be on this mythical highway. Route 66. And so I made the trip myself. My friend Craig Jackson a barrack Jackson auctions in his 1936 Ford they had. At one time this road stretching from Chicago to California. But today only small sections of it remain. And I want to see at least some of it. And maybe get some idea of what you're more wise for Route 66. Ron I think the Grand Canyon and the few other spots like Deadwood made them more popular come this way. And a lot of people like to come here and go up for a reservation. I did a lot of reasons or I don't know but just 66.
This is your heritage. Ross at the Sixers are heard these people come in. Looking for the past looking for yesterday. America with the best still looks like it did. 30 35 40 and 50 years ago. And. In general. Are still rocks up room. There are plenty of us that. Will just. Give these programs trying to. Have a baby. And I always like that because there's more back and I get back enough. And that. My guy. Everything is not a new technology that they come and I'm like you know that everything is different and I've been through to be fixed I don't know if it's going to be like you will invade. Gosh it's it's hard it's hard to comprehend.
What rock 616 is to mean what it means to thousands millions of people like us all over the United States now. Part of me. To put it in short. We have captured the imagination of the world. Where we saw. All these people are coming from all parts of the country all walks of life. This is what we have done capture the imagination. And. I want her future and I want success with. This awesome. When you're out here. You. Feel like. This truly is the great American highway. Route 66. I hope this old road goes on forever.
