The rabbit may be retiring but here comes the character of the throne alongside a couple of hair raising support crew coming up. On this week's. Motorway. Motor Week TV's automotive magazine is brought to you by general support grants from the Robert Bashi corporation makers of Barr super spark plugs and other automotive products for American European and Japanese vehicles. And by the Union Carbide Corporation makers of breastbone antifreeze and cooling America go with Presto. Your host for Motor Week. John Davis.
Hello and welcome again to motor week. Well another triple play coming up. That means three road test on tap starting with a new Volkswagen Golf replacement for the car that answered to the name rabbit after that two sporty models had back to back. There were NO PUEDO and a new kind of Chevrolet Camaro the IROC Z that Goss will exhaust the subject of automobile exhaust systems and Joyce Braga explores a future downsized luxury cars from General Motors. But first let's see if Volkswagen has produced yet another champion. With the introduction of their new golf. Now we can say goodbye to the rabbit since the patriarch of the run will drive econobox clan has finally been retired. Even those six million of them were sold worldwide. Its design seemed to suffer recently in comparison to newer cheaper products from other carmakers. So what we're getting here is an all new from the ground up golf. But when you look at it you have to wonder if it's enough of a change for bokes wagon to win back its small
car title. The front drive name comes not from the game but from the German for golf strain appropriate if for no other reason than the new cars tasteful flowing body shell. The golf hatchback slips ahead of the rabbit and all exterior dimensions will base at ninety seven point three is two point eight inches longer overall link 4.7 more while height is almost unchanged with two is improved by a substantial 2.1 inches. Once again a high performance model will also be available although for marketing reasons it will not carry the GOL name. The biggest exterior difference for the GTA is the inclusion of aero headlights over the Goffs normal rectangular units. Base prices range from six thousand eight hundred for the two door golf L and seven thousand two hundred for the four door to just under nine grand for the two door. The
larger size of the Golf GTI II translates into 12 percent more interior room that moves the rabbit replacement from the sub to pure compact status. While again all looks familiar. This German runabout now seems even more cavernous than before. All seats are improved in support while the guys are very firmly comfortable for even the longest trips. We drove this car coast to coast and should know the dash once again is understated with the basic off having only tax Speedo fuel and water temp readouts. The GTA III adds to the goss digital clock with a stock operated display for oil and outside air temperature along with trip distance speed and fuel use data. Rear seating is now capable for three adults while a solid folding rear seat is standard. This split back rest is optional on the golf and standard on the GTA II. Even with the rear seat in place luggage space in the golf and is up 30 percent. Standard golf power trains include an 85 horsepower one
point eight leader four with a 5 speed manual or three gear automatic and a non turbo charged 1.6 liter diesel coupled to the 5 speed. Only the also all new Jetta gets a turbo diesel. But it is this 100 horse high output one point at the guy that really runs with the current. 11 percent more. Our last year's rabbit DTI means the new car can cope well with its 130 extra pounds acceleration results were overall a hair faster than before. With zero to sixty nine point eight seconds and a fast quarter mile of seventeen point five seconds at 77. Power transfer is smoother and the new guy with no noticeable engine Vives and a much slicker shifting close ratio five speed. But we can't say that handling and the eye is also improved its larger size translates into a less nimble feel in turns. Body roll is
higher and their rear will come unglued with less warning. Yet it still yards better than most competitors. But now it's just somewhat less fun. Back to the positive however our brakes all the Goff has a fine desk drum system that has the wheel dish that gave secure if not lock free stuff from bit D5 at a short 111 feet on average. Both good fuel economy. We managed 30 on our test loop and a respectable noise level 70 D.B. at 55 have. I've been retained although the ride in the new GTA II is now much better over the regular pavement. So in a nutshell we came away from the new golf and very impressed superior cars and almost all respects and with good sales already being tallied in Europe despite its non revolutionary looks. These Volkswagen should score a hole in one here too. Now there's no question that the boat's wagon Goff sets new standards for small car
interior room and utility. Thanks to billions of dollars of investment. But how did the folks at V8 obvious hometown of Wolfsburg West Germany do it. Well here's a look at the birthplace of his new golf game. While spirit is one of those historic German towns fairly loaded with old world charm and in this case the charm is also located only six miles from the East German border. But the other side of that border doesn't have anything like this because this is the largest most Wacken plant in the world and back the largest continuous assembly plant of any kind anywhere. This was also the first home of the most popular VW of them all. The ubiquitous VW Beetle. A familiar face in practically every country on earth nowadays line workers are busy turning out jet is an Gough's here with up to the minute automated technology. For a time VW had trouble getting the kind of robot machinery they wanted so now they design
build and program their own robots. They still have a full workforce though but are able to incorporate computer persuasion and eliminate most tedious aspects of the assembly line here partially assembled car bodies are delivered across the plant by computer guided dollies to unify Brame welding machines. But later on a lot of the finish work is still done by skilled workers people who have spent their entire working lives with Volkswagen. Byrd is also the home of new car design. We're all born here with thousands of hours of traditional design methods and the latest computer aided system. They don't have to go very far to test their new designs either because nearby is the Aero facility with miles of stress over roads that duplicate just about every driving conditions. Last but hardly least is the Wolfsburg research and development center where these practical oddities come
from views of the future. Any of those usual. Just remember that it was this slightly unusual shape that made Volkswagen a household word in the first place. And now for Pat Goss has the lowdown on how all this exhaust system hardware works mufflers tailpipes and so on. What do you got. Where is Pat. John we've had a lot of viewers write in asking questions about exhaust systems and mufflers and so on. Well you know the modern automobile has an exhaust system that in some cases a little bit complicated. Now before we go into the various parts of it where we can really see and let's take a look at them as the way they look in the real world. Let's take a look underneath this car.
Now to begin with up on the front of the car way up at the engine in this particular case we have what is called a Y pipe. It connects to both sides of the engine and then blends into one pipe that comes back here to the catalytic converter. And virtually all modern automobiles have catalytic converters from the catalytic converter. We have this pipe right here. It comes back to the muffler. This is an exhaust extension pipe. Now the next thing we have is the muffler right here and from the muffler wrapped up in and around through the suspension system and out to the bank of the car is the tailpipe. Now let's see what this looks like out here where we can really see it instead of buried inside the car. We started up here at the end. This is the wind pipe that we were talking about underneath the car. You can see it comes from one side of the engine and the other side of the engine connects together and then runs into one pipe. This is why it's called a wife. Now this would only apply
to V8 and V-6 engines. If you have an inline six or a four cylinder engine all you'd have is one pipe that comes up and attaches to the manifold. OK next piece is the exhaust extension pipe connects to the Y comes back toward the muffler and in virtually all modern automobiles will have this little jewel right here. This is the catalytic converter. It will be inserted in the center of this pipe someplace. And this catalytic converter is a relatively simple piece of equipment. It's used to reduce exhaust emissions. Now this is done quite simply and we can see it here in this cutaway inside the catalytic converter. In this particular case there are pellets. These pellets are coated with metals that react with the hot exhaust gases coming through the system. They super heat it re burn the unburned fuel that is coming out the exhaust and reduce emissions. OK that's a very typical one. Another very typical type of catalytic converter has this oh it's a ceramic like a
honeycomb inside does the same thing as the other one just uses a little different configuration to do it. Also very common. Now these catalytic converters are kind of interesting on the late model cars because they can send this little unit right into a tail spin. Now what is this. Well this is the black box the brain the working part of the computer on the late model car. Now how does the converter of bank this. Well there are sensors in the exhaust system that control the black box. And if any part of the exhaust system gets worn out or damaged it may upset this drastically. So you could have some really serious performance problems. OK next part of the system would be behind the converter. That's right here it's the muffler and the muffler is a pretty simple piece of equipment. We have one that's cut away and we can see what's inside it. Nothing but a series of tubes like this that make the exhaust gases go back and forth through it and this
action muffles the sound. But here's where you have to be careful. See there are a lot of different quality types of mufflers for any given automobile. And you want to make sure that you buy a good quality muffler that is tailored for your particular car. And when I say tailored That's as opposed to a universal fits all type of muffler. What happens with those. Well in many cases the inlet to the muffler itself may be smaller than the pipe that leads into it. So how do they get around that. Well they have a reduce or like this is reduce or if it's under the the exhaust pipe and into the muffler and makes the two of them compatible. But if we take a look at this what does it do. It gives us a restriction in the exhaust system reduces the ability of the exhaust system to accept all of the exhaust gases. Now what's this mean. Well it very simply means that you might have a situation where you have reduced performance. You might have reduced fuel efficiency
and you might also over a period of time damage the engine in the car. Ok so much for that next piece that we have is right here this would be the tail pipe or in this case it's actually called a connector pipe because it goes to a resonator. Now not all cars have resonators resonators are simply like a second muffler. They're usually at the back of the car and their purpose is to take some. Oh annoying resonance out of the exhaust it may happen at a particular speed. So if you have one it's best to leave it on the car so tailpipe and resonator connector piping resonator these are the last pieces now holding all of this together of course we have clamps. We also have hangers. These hangars support the system from the body of the car. All of this must be kept in good shape. Now how can you go about keeping it in good shape. Well one thing that will help is to take a regular garden hose just hook it up to the outside faucet and spray it along the exhaust system of the
car. SEE Salten mud and everything will build up on it. And if you wash it away with a garden hose it will help the life expectancy of the exhaust system. Here's something else you can do that helps not only the exhaust system but the whole underneath of the car. This is a sprinkler type garden hose. Simply hook it up Turn it on and have the little streams of water spring out of it all over. Drive over it very slowly with the car and it'll help wash the exhaust system and the rest of the underneath of the car. Oh and here's something you don't want to do. Muffler bandages dozen different types of these things there are repairs and so on. You gotta keep in mind that these can be deadly. Reason being is that the whole object of this exhaust system is to get deadly carbon monoxide and other poisonous gases out the back of the car. And if you have a leak someplace along the system and you patch it with one of these you know you could let this into the car. So
remember that an improperly maintained exhaust system not only will affect your car's performance but it can be a killer. So keep it in good repair. So Joyce GM is finally getting around to downsizing their big front drive luxury cars. That's right John. The Riviera the Toronado the Eldorado and the Seville are all due for a very thorough shrinking to mid-sized by the 86 model year. Now they're all going to be built on this new car 30 chassis right. That's right they're going to be totally new models. Now the Riviera Toronado and Eldorado are really the same car. So you have to look closely at the sheet metal to see the differences between them. This is the Buick Riviera and it's typical of the new look and downsize cars with that long sloping Hood and the highest of the rear end. The Riviera shares a thick seat pillar with the Eldorado the
Olds Toronado will sport can see old headlights and like the Buick will be about 10 inches shorter and wheel base which will make it a hundred four inches. The overall length will be down about 28 inches to 170 for the engines in the GM 30s will have a crosswise arrangement. And the Buick and Toronado get Buicks fuel injected three and three point eight leaner V-6 gassers the old 4.3 later diesel is optional. As for the Eldorado it's going to have the same wheelbase and a similar overall length interior room is nearly the same as in current models. The Eldo will come in three models there's going to be a base version of the Turing coupe and a quote only the style that will have a stainless steel roof band. It gets caddies for point 1 liter all aluminum fuel injected gas powered V8. Now the Seville has a similar layout but it's four doors make it look a bit different in the front end treatment and the even shorter rear deck that is more conventional than the current models Basile trunk.
Now that's hardly the end of the car news John because GM is planning on Mercedes-Benz 380 SL fighter and it's going to be sold by Cadillac and called the Khalif style. And it is planned to debut in 86 as a 1987 model. Now the cars convert of their body will be built in Italy by Pinon for enough for final assembly by Cadillac in the US This photo is of one of the first test cars. Now our sources say the final design will be a bit more exotic but the Calisto will be a two seater only with both a removable hard top and a folding soft top. Just like the 380 as well. And GM will price the CO at $50000 plus. Wow. What about rumors of high dollar two seaters from both Buick and Ozwald bill. Well they too were apparently in the works but unlike the Calisto they will be hard tops only. OK Thank you Joyce. Now it seems like everybody's racing to the market with all new cars like the
Volkswagen Golf and GM as a luxury project. But there's also no lack of updating of older models going on too. The fact is gas prices are down and they yearn for more performances up. So it's no surprise to find that a lot of the updating is going on under the hood and that means new or revised drive trains is in our next road test pair. One is the hottest version yet of Detroit's best selling sporty coupe and the other is a flashy French job that's finally ended its search for proper power. Yes Virginia there finally is some believable for Waco power as this front driver seems to have finally found an engine. The late unlamented and underpowered 86 horsepower 1.6 liter fuel injected for and its high strong 120 horse turbo charged can are both gone replaced with a new all aluminum to point to leader. This is now the Fragos only U.S. motor. It's an enlarged version of the almost 8 year old 2 liter that has powered the European four way go since its beginning horsepower is
91 but the real story is in its torn at one hundred twenty three Its a 43 percent gain over the old standard engine and slightly more than the turbo 1.6 which is probably why AMC unexpectedly stopped importing the turbo Four Way ago just before the 85 model was introduced. So even those straight line results are similar to the turbo way go. There isn't nearly as much fuss with the standard 5 speed 0 to 60 as nine point five seconds. Only a half second back of the turbo. And with a slightly stronger and wider torque her. Result of seventeen point four and eighty is only two tenths of a second and three mph off the old engine's pace that's mostly due to the extra weight of the new engine and a more economy oriented final drive gearing russet yielded a thirty mile per gallon fuel economy loop the same as the turbo for a go. EPA fuel economy figures are 23 city and 31 highway. Again a dent of all the last year's performance package handling however knows no such parity.
The extra suspension hardware of the turbo was not carried out with a two point two. The springs and shocks are too soft to take tight corners rapidly but enough power is available to lay on the throttle for spirited exits out of the turn. The now standard 14 inch tires are a big help for pavement effusion. This is a typically French setup but with a favorable byproduct. The freeway goes rough road ride is unusually smooth for a short 96 inch wheelbase car. Besides more power. The latest from Waco also features a number. Problem. Beginning with its brakes the frontis brakes are now ventilated and they do a much neater job of stopping despite a lot of nose diving at distances of one hundred twenty eight feet are an 11 percent improvement over older models and there's no fade or pool of power assisted system was easy to modulator even with some occasional front lockup. The interior also got some freshening up with a new dash. There is clear
instrumentation and more of it along with a trip computer as an option. While the seats are new they deserve another mention as being just as well supportive as ever. There is still also a lack of rear leg room but they're quite roomy luggage is expandable by folding the split back seat cushions so if you don't mind the keel overturns you'll still get the great ride admirable economy and comfortable environment of this unusual and now adequately powered sport coupe with its always distinctive looks and hatchback versatility or no has given the four way go to point to an appealing us translation. However it's even easier to understand the statement Our second sport makes RAW yet sophisticated power is the text of a new rear drive Chevrolet Camaro. Iraq is easy. It's named after the international Race of Champions. But the Iraq is a lot more than just an understated solid color trim package positioned one notch above the more garish the 28. While you can order the
Iraq with the see twenty eight to five speed manual 190 horse L. 69 b 8. It's the new LV 9 multi-port injected 215 horse 5 leader with a four speed automatic that makes the Iraq easy unique even standing still it's a sight to behold. The configuration is called tuned for injection and it shared with the top Pontiac Firebird and 5.7 liter Corvette. The heart of the engine is this plenum that works like an exhaust extract. It. Will. Send us increases the density of the intake air to provide turbo like boost with much less complexity. Engine breathing is further enhanced with a higher lift cam. But you have to experience the Iraq Sue's neck snapping take off to really appreciate its prowess. Zero to 60 is a flashing seven point one second. Quarter mile and a steaming fourteen point seven seconds at a cool 90 Iraqis Toppin is over 135.
So why only an automatic gearbox. Well apparently the new engines 275 pounds of torque is too much for the Camaro is 5 speed manual. At least we hope. Until next year. But there's actually a lot more to applaud about the Iraq z than just motor suspension Extras include Bill Stein gas shocks and a thicker anti-roll bar at the rear along with a super aggressive 50 series gator back tires all around. The first result is an amazingly flat sticky car with quick steering that is more neutral than the 28. Quite a statement about such an. Nose heavy car. There is naturally plenty of power to slip the tail out it will have so many horses under the paddle. You do have to drive smart. The second result of the Iraq suspension updating is to provide a cure for all those loose uppers caused by the bone jarring ride of the Z 28 the Iraq C is firm and controlled but also very every day level but.
The Iraq's brakes are up to snuff too. Four wheel vented disc if straight little effort stops all the pedal is mushy and there is some premature lock up when cold distances from 55 or 113 feet are outstanding for any 30 500 lb street racer. The interior of the Iraq seat can be left rather basic as in this test sample. Or you can get it with most of the Z 28 overdone images. At least they've eliminated the Camaro as twin needles but ometer this more typical unit is much clearer though the fact that any speed over 85 doesn't register is laughable and a car like Iraq see the two Iraq samples we drove were preproduction models but we were promised that they were accurate examples of what you can order from your Chevy dealer now. Despite reports to the contrary that tacked on nonfunctioning hood louvers did make production along with more resolute grill and started driving lambs. But that's just about it for basic. Iraq fluff. Thank goodness. For in our opinion the Iraq Z
needs nothing superficial to enhance its terrific blend of practical technology and superior performance. It's a car that makes a fresh fast track on the old pony car road and it's a real treat. And we have more treats in store for you next week and I hope you'll join us then for the next motoring motorway quiz brought to you by general support grants from the Robert Bhatia corporation makers of Barr super spark plugs and other automotive products for American European and Japanese vehicles and the Union Carbide Corporation. Makers of Brest own antifreeze in cool in America goes with Presto. You take one high class sports car add a dash of luxury
and make sense of basic transportation and you've got motor week. Hi I'm John Davis and right here is where we dish up our weekly road test mixture of Jeep luxury sedans band pickups in imports a generous helping of maintenace advice and new car previews. It's the last word on the automotive world every week godmother. Oh.
We. Will. Motor with TV's automotive magazine is brought to you by the Robert Barchi corporation makers of Barr super spark plugs and other automotive products for American European and Japanese vehicles and buy priced own antifreeze and call it America goes with brownstone. Your host for Motor Week. John Davis.
Hello and welcome again to motor week to a special edition in fact this time we're going to take a fresh look at some cars we first tested a while ago. Cars you wanted to see one more time. We're going to update our opinions on seven domestics and seven imports from a long list of road test requests. Pat Goss will join the parade with us step by step march to the best form of preventive maintenance changing your crankcase oil and filter. But let's strike up the band and bring on the cars you asked about with the first floats by way of Detroit. Beginning with one of our favorites Ford Mustang. This is our 1982 model test. We found the five leader 157 horses more than enough to overwhelm the car's tires. But in a straight line it was a pure blast. This Mustang convertible confirmed it was up to 175 horsepower. And 84 package was added for 85 there is cleaner sheet
metal and even more power to a whopping 210 this early prototype manage 0 to 60 and just a shade over eight seconds with a quarter mile running 16 even at 90 mph. Hotter Cam has been added along with tubular headers and power saving accessory drive system. Here ship reaching the speed now has almost European and handling has been tightened further. Get the gas over oil shocks and struts give the GTI a more bearable ride. What we've got here is a powerful V-8 combined with ords quad shock rear suspension variable rate Springs and wonderfully sticky legal PR 16 timer all makes the $10000 base price one thousand eighty five Mustangs one of the better balance performance bargains going. And the same goes with our next cars. GM insiders once dubbed it the whiskey runner won and we know it is a Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS from its huge success on the NASCAR grand national circuit to its equally showroom pace.
The Chevy throwback is more than a toy. True to force an image making. For a big heavy coupe. The Monte Carlo SS has surprising prowess with his 180 horsepower 5 meter v 8 0 to 60 takes eight point five seconds and a quarter mile is dispatched in a none too shabby sixteen point four seconds in an 87 mph. SS cornering while exhibiting substantial plow has little role. That performance tires pull the Mahdi's thirty five hundred pounds around smartly. All the bland interior of the original SS is still standard buckets are available in 1905 new collars t roofs and a four speed automatic should keep the SS package of popular Monte-Carlo option. And with a modest eleven thousand four hundred dollar base price the SS along with the Mustang G.T. offers today's generation more total performance than the older muscle car fanciers ever thought possible. But if you think Detroit can only build big the.
Board will prove you wrong with two big turbo coops. The Thunderbird Turbo and Mercury Cougar X are seven thousand nine hundred eighty five while the outside stays pretty much intact. There is some additional euro influence trim However Ford has put quite a bit of effort into a new T-Bird cougar interior. It now features a canted dash and one of the best analog gauge packages you'll find anywhere and with great tires gas over oil shocks and struts higher effort steering a quieter 2.3 later motor and a swifter 5 speed shifter. The T-Bird and cougar are now even better performers. Steer and overly sensitive where in twitching as we found in the original 83 model have been reduced again Ford has taken a basically good package and added the kind of refinement you used to find only in European cars. Quick maneuvers in the T-Bird turbo coupe. Well no. Longer white as a sheet and a well-equipped base price of thirteen thousand four hundred dollars. You can keep the shirt on your back as well. But a lot
of viewers also wanted more dope on traditional rank and file transportation. The top of the list is the successful AMC Renault Alliance sedans and it's hatchback on court. Can the major change this year for both front wheel drive lines as the optional 1.7 liter four cylinder engine. It has a small power advantage over the original one point for later. That still motivates the basic models. AMC has recently reduced prices on the base on core and alliance with both models now starting under $6000 series offers two or four doors construction quality of all the variants we've seen has been above average due to the extensive use of robots in their Wisconsin assembly. Their interiors are still a bit too grand for our taste. They are functional in the alliance and encores ninety seven point eight is longer than most rival subcompact. And along with pedestal seating delivers excellent small car leg room. Neither
line however should be pushed too hard in corners since the very soft tires and springs reach their limits quickly. All the encore G asked for that's better tread and handling package is an improvement. These cars are still mostly thrifty every day transportation and for that mission the alliance and the encore score very well. It's easy to explain why modern designs like the encore in alliance are popular but understanding the interest behind rear drive him cars is a lot harder. These Aspen Volare bass models come in three flavors diplomat with a grand and a rather overdone Chrysler Fifth Avenue. These are Chrysler's last powered cars. Their five point two liter engines deliver 130 horsepower to lock up three speed automatics interiors are old fashioned with lots of chrome and veneer. But at least they are comfortable. Perhaps the main reason for the popularity is price diplomatic brand. Prices started nine thousand five hundred dollars
and in the case of the Fifth Avenue at fourteen thousand two hundred five it could be the luxury car bargain of the year. But if you feel you should rush down and buy one of these dinosaurs or they become extinct take note of the cars should be around for at least two more years. And that brings us to the most familiar of family style vehicles the station wagon and you've asked for more information on two of the newest variants on an old theme in their traditional vein we have the GM Chevrolet celebrity anchors one end of the price structure. It starts at eight thousand four hundred seventy nine dollars followed by the Pontiac 6000 at nine thousand four hundred thirty five. The base cruiser retails at nine thousand eight hundred fifty eight with a Buick Century variant coming in at nine thousand nine hundred forty one all can be ordered with this to a tailgate that includes a lift up window for loading small article seating can be expanded for up to eight with a rear facing bench that is a usable
drive models come with transverse four and six cylinder gas power and a soon to be discontinued to be 60 years old. For their modest mid-size exterior. A wagons offer nearly as much interior room as full size rear drive wagon and they can be pretty competent performers too. Especially in Chevy trim it adds enough Continental rotten handling flavor to keep a long trip from being too monotonous. Yet even the popular GM a wagons may someday be displaced by the newest trend in people movers. The caravan employment Voyager. Perhaps the most significant US models of this decade. The caravan and Voyager now up to eight passenger comfort with the addition of a front bench seat for nine hundred eighty five thousand one hundred fifty dollars. Van Brunt will drive models handle very much like a normal sedan provide the versatility of a covered compact pickup truck. One feature lacking in the Chrysler and Voyager is powered.
Chrysler still has no. 6 to squeeze under their short hoods this limits payload and telling abilities. A new engine is due but not for two more years. They will have to make do with a pair of cylinders zone to point to leader or an optional 2.6 leader Mitsubishi power plant. And that's it for our motor week by request domestic model review. Now whether you buy one of those domestics or an import. No form of preventive maintenance is more important than frequent engine oil and filter changes. So for a detailed look at how to do it and how not to. Here's Pat Pat. John here is the single most important thing that a person can do to make the engine in their car last longer and its proper oil changes. What exactly are proper oil changes. Well the oil and the oil filter on a car should be changed every 3000 miles or three months
whichever comes first. Now by doing this you can increase the life expectancy of the engine in the car anywhere from two to three times what it would be otherwise and it doesn't cost all that much. And believe it or not it is the one thing that we can still do ourselves on. Most all cars really quite simple. And if you're going to do it yourself Well there are some tools that you're going to need and some things you have to look out for. First thing that you need is a box end wrench to fit the drain plug on your car. Now there are different sizes for different cars so find out what's appropriate for your car and get a box and ranch to fit it. And one thing that you don't want to do in this department right here this is an adjustable wrench. These things have a real bad habit. They don't fit the drain plug real tight and if the drain plug happens to be really tightened into the car as you try to loosen it all round the edge of the drain plug off and you have a real time getting the plug out of the oil pan. So don't use these for changing oil. Next thing that you'll need is you'll
need an oil filter wrench. Here's one that you don't want. This filter wrench is the type that we see so frequently in these 89 tool bins and places like that you know you go in the hardware store department store and have this assortment of tools for 89 or 99 cents. Well these things can be a real disaster they're very flimsy and many times break. They also much more frequently though they collapse the oil filter on the car. This is something you don't want to use. You can get in a lot of trouble with it for just a little bit more money you can buy a professional oil filter wrench like this. It's very sturdily constructed. There's a really good job and it'll keep you out of trouble. So this is what you want a good quality oil filter wrench. Some cars though you may have limited access and you might need something special. Here's a specialty type of filter wrench right here. This one fits over the end of the oil filter like so the end of the filter is kind of rigid and this has compatible ridges in the filter tool itself and it
clamps onto the end of it. Put a wrench on the other end and you can take the filter off or put it on with this tool. It doesn't work on all filters or all cars but in some special cases it's very handy to have. OK next you're going to need some tools to get the oil open and things like that. First thing that you're going to need is right here this is what I prefer to use. This is just a regular can opener punch holes in the top of the oil can and I use with that just a regular plastic funnel to pour the oil back into the car. Some people prefer this this is a regular oil spout that punches a hole through the top of the can and supposedly you can pour the oil in with it but it does have a little bit of a bad habit. I like to leak lots of times it makes quite a mess under the hood anyway. You do need something to get the oil back into the car. The other thing that you need here you need something. When you drain the oil out you need something to put that oil in. Probably the least expensive thing you could get is right here. Most any
auto parts store would have a drain pan like this for usually less than a dollar and a half. But there is something that costs just a little bit more and is very handy in this department. That's right here. This is a combination unit. What it is it has like a recess in the side of it and it has a hole right here with a plug in it. You slide this under the car and the oil can drain any place in here and it runs through this hole and into the container. When you're through with it you put the plug back in it and you take the oil container and all. To any of your local recycling stations simply take the top off and dump the oil into the receptacles at the recycling station and you're done with your waste oil. You have to make sure along with this that there is one thing you don't do. You don't dump waste oil out on the ground. Very very bad business make sure you always take it to a recycling station. The last thing that you need this is something really simple right here. This is the
owner's manual out of the car. You need either an owner's manual or a service manual because some cars with turbo chargers and sometimes on diesel engines and so on. There are special requirements as far as how you go about changing the oil. You need to get that information out of the owners or service manual. You also have to get from the manual the proper type and quantity of oil and the proper type of oil filter to use. Very important. Make sure that you use it now. Next thing you have to do is to actually change the oil now to change the oil you have to get the car slightly and you want it as level as possible in order to do that. Probably the easiest and safest thing that you can do is to pull the two front wheels up over a low curb and set the parking brake and block the rear wheels. This will generally raise the car enough that you can get under it but it doesn't tilt it so far that the oil won't drain properly. It's also safe. The next thing is to make sure that the
engine in the car is at normal operating temperature. You've got to run it for 15 or 20 minutes to get the oil liquid and get any particles of dirt or anything in the system to be in suspension with the oil. Then you have to remove the drain plug in the bottom of the oil pan and we've already drained the oil out of this particular car. The big thing here is is to make sure that when you turn this drain plug that you turn it counter clockwise. All of them turn counter clockwise. OK take the drain plug out. Let the oil drain out of the car until the oil coming out of the oil pan is right down to a trickle like what we see here. Then put the oil plug back into the oil pan run it up by hand as far as you can don't put a wrench on it right away because you could cross-thread it then put the wrench on it and get out. Don't get carried away though you want it tight but you don't want to over tighten.
Ok so much for draining the oil. Now the oil filter. First thing you have to do is to get your container that you're draining the oil into under the oil filter and then you use your oil filter wrench and again oil filters always turn counter-clockwise and in both cases you're with the filter in the drain plug make sure that you're real careful because the engine is hot the oil is hot. You have to be careful not to spill this hot oil on you because it can burn. Take the filter off. Why she have to dispose of the filter usually take the old filter to the recycling station they generally have receptacles for used filters. Then you take the new filter you coat the rubber gasket on the top of the filter with clean oil out of a can of oil that you've just opened. Make sure it's clean oil. Then you read the instructions on the side of the filter because it will tell you exactly how to install it put the filter back on the car following those
instructions. Then after all of that's done you have to refill the crankcase with the proper amount of oil. After you've done all of this start the engine be very careful don't rev the engine when you first start it as soon as the engine gets oil pressure then let it idle for 15 to 20 minutes. I get good and warm during this period of time make sure that you don't have any leaks at the oil filter or the drain plug. After that everything is good and you have just completed your oil change and this is some of the cheapest insurance that you can buy to insure the long life of the engine in your car. Thanks Pat. OK now that we know how to keep all those new cars in shape let's roll on with our cavalcade of possibilities. Seven import models they range from flash to funky. As for the flash what better way to start with the newest chapter in the long running
car legend. Three hundred. A year ago 300 versions of a very smooth power for the turbo motor totals 200 horses time of eight seconds. Fifteen point eighty four. So the turbo 300 a rocket ship to body style. Both have standard is not what we call a true sports car. It's more like a very lucky. Driver control of the overall suspension responses with better handling car than it really is. That means they get you into trouble. Since its rear end is very light. Is an improvement over
the 300 as well. Even with obviously a place in the market. In the fall of 1900 to. The battering ram there along with it now. But since then it hasn't gone up that much or that increase power to 161 is a willing unit. So the handling and ride of Toyotas improved
for the tires we found with its handling. In the first place. And here's another Japanese that many of you asked about is. Eleven thousand dollars. It's a splendid looking transport with most of what's news about the impulse is what didn't happen for a long rumored Turbo and hasn't made it to the US yet. Normally aspirated 1.9 liter fuel injected bore is the only propulsion. With 90 horsepower and 180 pounds of torque performance doesn't know about the car's racy looks. Takes a long 13 seconds flat and reasonably secure but with all the standard equipment you could wish air power steering and windows cruise control and a good sound system. It's hard to criticize too much. Our only other real satellite control pods may not be perfect but the impulse is just to be seen if
you do something now about the power. Oh maybe next year. But let's leave the Orient for the other side of the globe for West Germany for a quick look at the books 1985 in 10 years as a rabid new cars. We tested this car in 1900 to get a larger rear spoiler. Third more fuel capacity and minor trim addition. The latest Iraq hasn't been a big seller so we wondered why so many viewers asked about it. Then we got a look at the price. Last year's dealer price incentives have now been built into this year sticker prices are actually 7 percent lower than last year. Prices now only nine thousand nine hundred eighty. Also Mark and. The power was increased last year with the addition of the 1.8 leader for the rabbit and top speed is now 110. It's close ratio and so is its handling steering is
very quick and precise and there's a little body brake stops you. Know compared to the other sporty hoops we've talked about is much closer to being a true sports car. But while the 300 supra impulse and all cars that aspire to performance the to see their target Bertone X1 9 seems to be the modern definition. Hardly knew this much copied minute engine design has gone through a couple of years when it stopped selling the X1 9 in the US Bertone they were actually designed in assembles the car began distribution through Malcolm Bricklin International Automobile importers by adding standard equipment. They tried to move the humble roadster up market prices jumped 11000 to 14000. If you wanted a $14000 X1 9 well Bertone is now going to sell the X1 9 through different distributors. And future shipments will have fewer standard
and a new price of the sticker to be at around $10000. The small spirited fun to toss around sports car will be affordable once again. Re Tony x 1 9 1.5 liter engine delivers 0 to 60 and about 11 seconds. And pouring control is precise. It's a little tricky. The average driver and the four wheel does brake system will stop you short. Sure. It's only 13 feet long the Bertone X1 is a short order. There were still have around. Now back to the Japanese side of the world and the only people mover in our import car a Plymouth products sold under the Chrysler banner ironic that Chrysler sells both available front wheel drive minivan or maxi wagon design. This one due to import restraints is a model that many buyers search for but you find. It is much smaller than Voyager and do our minds much more like a
wagon than a van that has a high ceiling sedan like doors and seats that all told one way or another. Although the Vista is rated for seven passengers use of the remote bench will be limited to the younger set. Is economical with power we managed to real world mileage of 30. And as the name implies there is more than enough glass to eliminate blind spots. Usually a shorter traditional station wagon. So we've had the import flash and a bit of this. Now it's on to something else. The proper way to describe the Subaru brand stands for recreational all terrain vehicle for a vehicle of its size and personality. It's a little like a two seater car a little like a small pickup and it's on demand four wheel drive makes it a popular road narrow trail blazer.
This is a rough going little sucker. It gives you the feeling that it's dirty glass. One point a liter four cylinder will pull you through just about any Mach seven thousand nine hundred twenty nine dollars standard. In our test we said the brat was the closest thing yet to a motorized mountain Gauteng. But rumor is that after the little brat hills no more that's too bad. But we hope we won't miss you when we're back here for our next motor wait for that. Motorway was brought to you by the Robert Bosh corporation. Makers of Barbie super sparkplug. And other automotive products or American European and Japanese vehicles. And by presto own anti-freeze and go in America go with rest of vehicles provided by Al Packard Ford Brown's VW does nationwide Nissan
Datsun at Town and Country sports guards. This just might be the hot rod bargain of the year. And this is yet another off road challenger from Japan both on motorways. Hello I'm John Davis and we're turning our spotlight this week on the dodge Shelby charger from Chrysler and the four by four or rather from Toyota Plus our regular maintenance advice a
