In rainy Seattle, we have a special relationship with the sun--that rare, glowing orb that flickers into view more and more this time of year. The summer solstice, officially on June 22nd, happens in the northern hemisphere when the sun is farthest north, lingering between sunrise and sunset for the longest day of the year. How did this solar phenomenon become an event for festivals, bonfires, and rituals of fertility and growth? UW Astronomer and astronomical historian Dr. Woody Sullivan talks with Dave Beck about the science and celebration of the solstice throughout history.
