Description
Description
It's a busy night at a restaurant in Northern California. The Maitre'd has an open table. He says, "Donner, party of eight." There's a pause. "Excuse me," the maitre'd says. "I meant Donner, party of seven. Your table's ready." This is one of many jokes about the Donner Party, 87 people who traveled via wagon train from Illinois to California in 1846. They were trapped by snow in the Sierra Nevadas and resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Daniel James Brown heard plenty of Donner Party jokes growing up. He never thought they were funny. Two of Daniel's great uncles helped rescue survivors from the snowbound Donner camp. So he knew a different side of the story. Daniel's connection to the Donner Party led him to write a book about the tragedy. It's called "The Indifferent Stars Above." He tells KUOW's Jeannie Yandel why he went so far as to walk the trail the Donner Party took on their ill–fated journey west.
