Hi verb of yours I'm Christie the wordsmith. Author and verb of war Robert Hendrickson says the curious toast. Here's mud n your I quote was originally made in the muddy trenches of World War 1. Or in the cafes where English and American soldiers spent their leaves trying to forget them. This toast is an expression in search of itself its source having been lost in the mists of etymological history still including Hendrix and there are at least three theories of the genesis of Here's mud in your eye. One has a toast coming from the Middle Ages when bits of toasted bread were added to wine as flavoring. If a reveller inverted his goblet quickly the bits of toast and other dregs or the mud would sometimes slide out and land in the drinkers. I saw no mud in your eye meant bottoms up drink it all down. Another account suggests that this expression was a common dedication from one horse racing jockey to another the rider who propose the toast expressed the
hope that his opponent would trail behind where the leading horses would literally kick mud in his eye. There is no record on the birthplace of Heres mud in your eye. The Oxford English Dictionary dates the expression to nineteen twenty seven which makes the Middle Ages theory a weak candidate. I prefer the toast made by jockeys. Here's mud in your eye. I'm Christie the wordsmith.
