As part of the state station's continuing series on the inner core we're bringing you the first of two programs dealing with the issue of alleged police brutality and the larger issue of police community relations. Tuesday October 17th 1967 a public hearing was held in Milwaukee to hear witnesses underoath present their testimony regarding alleged complaints of police harassment or undue use of force. Four hundred persons heard testimony from seven witnesses. The questioning was led by attorneys Harry F. Peck and Orville Pitts hired as special counsel for the hearings. Alderman Bill Phillips and Fred Linder a vice chairman of the Milwaukee County Labor Council presided at the session. The hearing held under the auspices of the Milwaukee community relations Social Development Commission begin with testimony from student Roger else earth and his roommate Louis ching ching related the incident. - The first in a series on alleged police brutality, and police/community relations in Milwaukee's Inner Core. Tuesday, October 17, 1967 : A public hearing to hear witnesses testimony regarding police harassment and undue use of force. Held under auspices of Milwaukee Community Relations Commission. - Students beaten and arrested by police after name-calling incident in restaurant. - Clarence Smith, member of NAACP Youth Council, beaten during October Open Housing March. Police were not wearing their badges. - Student Bruce [Bagen] described police swinging night sticks as they charged marchers. Bruised on arms and back. Arrested by police without badges. - Michael Miller, Milwaukee teacher, who witnessed the beating, collaborates Began's testimony. Adds testimony about the police beating of Kenny Malone, and beatings on other marches. - Attny. Matthew Bruce [Gottchauk], describes beatings he observed during August marches.
