Coverage of the 1983 Murrow Symposium with Fred Friendly, Socratic Dialogues Part 1

It for me. I will just go to Washington State University go out to solve the real world for. This problem for a long time for five year on this auditorium conference with Steve Martin. And that was the first time that we're going to support. We often sleep for babies to be very supportive. All right. We both came here with a paid tribute to my old mother. It's difficult for others not familiar with the parents and the principal accounting firm. You wouldn't think it would make a speech that we just think we all first reporting from World War 2 started a TV documentary series from person to person in 1961 it was chosen to be director of Washington for most major speech by President John Kennedy.
However much more in fact many members of the foreign policy of the pictures that he painted with his words I was the mayor of London. Good Night and Good Luck. For those of us in broadcast news for career programs the founder of the bullfrogs meet the standards. That's former CBS commentator. It looks like it's almost from the 1960 Paul hemolysis doing stop talking. He was given a gold medal symposium last year along this year with a different format. We were first here for a Sunday night at the beach performing arts Coliseum 8 o'clock APC's cheek to correspondents. Richard Thompson from the State
Department. We'll give you the rest. Everyone was invited to talk about keeping with my present from last year's symposium hypothetical. Explore the relationship between the government and the press. Was put to CBS News by helping the Columbia School of Journalism in New York here's the other version of the hypothetical with prettify. The Morning. Which makes me think radio stations. I didn't get to me. I once walk into my wife's hospital. The greatest teacher in the class. But I think that's what a lot of the teacher's job is to make the decision making
sense that you can escape or leave. I'm going to make him sweat. I'm going to make everybody. The words are almost business. Like along with the School of Journalism. Think about what going to do with it. It's very easy to deal with anything it takes to get it. It's very easy to deal with everything. It's just. It's very difficult to do what I was doing at least six feet. It's very it's not just that's what you think about it. It seems to get much more interesting to stop you
because you just need want you to know who. You are. And once you stop putting things to begin with you get a good piece. Of steel. But I just feel that you know judgment did you ever forget would you we do have a little bit. Still a little tiny piece of paper.
I lost. My interest. To be like this. You want me to be more successful. That was just beginning wedding dress. You're sitting in your broadcast that this person's chance to work. With you.
Yes. It's. Just you know much more except that I look at the picture. You know it's like you make me think you can tell you much about your business but I've been reading all the problems and you've got nothing to stop. Me. So yes. You can tell that I wanted to read it. What is your body.
What's going on. Nineteen hundred and sixty years. Counseling can get eight dollars a gallon and you're standing in Providence Rhode Island. Ten to get gas is just like it was in 1933 for speaking to be all the time. So what is important is that twenty four million people are living in is increasing every year. Every year. The increase is at any time since
it's working. The president of the United States is trying to do something. So I want to. Talk to just to make a statement. You know I quite like you because you can do this thing you can take it. They've been
told of it. We are going to call can into the game. At least that unit could be conquered. We just when it comes to date. For you to take things that you are doing something for the first floor within five days they expect you be kissing each other. She was just a wonderful story. So she was striking. That's when I really
know but I think somebody who's involved in these efforts like. SWAT a goofball that's ritual. So I didn't know I was always just because this is just a person could have his reasons for saying this to the reason don't you want the country to make the great state of the city. And I just. She was just people just going to talk to your producer at this stage of your message probably depending on the producer
to do his job. What do you think you're sitting on park benches with stories that are not on the straight. Well I heard being offered. I would I would like. To. But my reporters requiring a little more before they agree to meet strange men and then would you like to dance. I would like to. I would like them to. Ask for a little more than what's good for hours with what you are used to hearing from kooks who somehow get through the switchboard and secretaries. They consume an awful lot of time. They wheeled out. Mr. Scott when they need help. Turns out to be a
place to that you might the State University because you can go and see each other at least 10 years which is what the State Department is. I would certainly want to expand on some pretty straight lines. For example. The lives of the hostages are we not. I guess we're just sort of I know you didn't really. Do you think that this was a promise but. This
is. The get. Go if you're going to go me. I tried to negotiate negotiate with the American people. I wanted you to mention that Mr. Trump and said look I'm working on this. I think you could ask Who was the source. What do you think could make Truscott's who seems to have been responsible. For. That response but you have to trust there was enough here at least according to the conversation just maybe
I got to do it right. This mistakes as I'm doing to confront you sir. That is the source I simply want you to know. And that's all are going to tell. You when you think you're just Como's hope that. You didn't get the ones that are close enough to make you the newspaper that. You get these things.
You know the reporter who works for me of going out and told was forced to. Just bounce off. This not. OK. You're not you know when you go out there you know that you are not. Caught. You are a CBS New York Times and. All that Mondays you do not do your confidence to any source especially. When. You don't do you your confidence investigating all you do is make sure that this person has been given absolutely nothing. A conversation with a legendary It all agreed that it was not till I've spoken game that I must know and I'm saying to you that
we're making great but the payoff could be next. You got to use it. That's the challenge that you need your confidence source before he told you. You've given your confidence in me tells you and I don't think you can do it. Don't you trust him. Sure it turns out it was time to do this. You don't without him. He didn't even tell you this season. He's putting. Up this post with you. I'm not. Trying to hurt you. Any chance. Do you really think you're tempted to get a pretty cheap spot.
Did you get there you will learn from each other. Do you want your balls. You didn't do long come to the man's face. There is. I mean I think. It is great he's nervous breakdown beach. This is. The. Way. I like to look into it. So. Are very tricky. And complicated. Sources close to
being done. What does it say about what you would think about building. Big speeches. They want to know if you give me time. You are not limited to 20 seconds. I would say no. Is right next to you. You can your words. You want. To go to maybe. They didn't want to use dating. Service. This is one that the company says. We can't because it is so it's
just so. What people do. Satan will do his best. To keep the Swiss confidence in but he's not happy that we shouldn't let the games before we go to pieces. This person tells us he's just a reason because he. Has done that. But sooner or later this coming summer is going to get made. Something is going to happen. There's a pretty good chance that you are committed to go to court. And be. In. Court to disclose your source to get these children. And he also knows that he's got to tell us what are going to come to do. I'm not going to make even disclose his source. To me that's I think we need to take a look at just how they came to get out.
It is just not possible to get. Older you paid. Very well and let's see if we can. Get you. Caught up in time. Do you know. Where. To go.
Just. Getting nervous. Great to see. You. We got to do this. It strikes me that we've been through. It's just ridiculous. Crazy. It all turned suddenly it's just a mockery. So. Why are you sitting on the big names don't you. You didn't read
it. From the. Cooper takes them to talk. You have a feeling. Don't get me if you can use just me being a doctor or something. Don't you think. That's the case. You can do what
you state university years ago. We could take that because it simply isn't. It. Would you be tempted to just do your job. No you didn't report it. Nope. Nope nope nope. Wouldn't see. Anything you can do. Mr. Peters thank you so much for your time today. I take it. As little as
possible for the drinking problem. There. Was work in the New York Times most of the CBS News. Do you know what you're thinking what to do. Well I can tell you the things that worried me about this is that this was sort of my whole theory for drug problems. And I know that you are are you. About this topic really. Yes it was. Possible immediate future action. How much does that really happened. What did you
say to you look your personality and your relationship to somebody else do you think is there something you can teach your child to work on the options. This is Mr. Steele is much easier. Are you going to do with this week to be. This is something is making sense to me now. So we got in the paper. I'm sorry to say that is telling me that because I would probably not know that I was this is what we've committed to and that's the way it operates. I would say to them just operate.
I couldn't get to those questions. Is this a secret. Oh you know sometimes that just to the but again. You better start to talk about that. Otherwise I would have come up with the story of the secretary of state. But. My. Top secret this is something that's just too polite to develop because if you do that going to need to get a case like that the next time. I just want to look back at this plant workers. I. Think it means
I can talk to you. You can tell a pretty good idea to document your resume. You can you can go for. It. Charlie you want to check out some of them because it. Didn't pop up. I. Asked. Them whether they so complete that they just need a chicken or something in the Drummondii isn't it. Giving something to comment on that. We like to think that. In most circumstances this is a situation where there is
no this is the response to be. Put into the weather varies so culturally but it doesn't need further cheeky response. I think you're going to have to get a sense of just tell me to expect things to take place in your states which seems to. Be that seems to be public. I think that there are circumstances where it needs to go. That's something you know you're going to come in the form in the morning. Hope you can fill up so. At least get the administration to
this story down. It's truly something. But they don't have to ask whether they think this is something. That. But we expect to be asked to expect to satisfy. Mr. Ford do you want to go where it is limited. You can't. It's just it just seems to me that this is the existence of the telling. We don't know because it's important for the pumps that you're talking you know development time in the second that it might not necessarily be really testing it's just some a. Problem probably a lot more of a story. Also important for me to watch it.
With someone is just. One of the ways that you might do that is too scared to get to where it might be somewhere else some other source. Or someone else. LOL. LOL LOL LOL LOL you're talking about me. Doesn't sound right to me that makes you think it got so. Bad that you need to treat the guy. The pictures are just too good. But you may be reporting in the meantime. Word
gets to a guess and somebody to get the United States to change each boy to the. Just because. You got there is possible. Then he says you need to talk to you on a private spamming war with the United Nations in the first place. Tippett You do do. You think know. What you are people. Here to fear something that's terribly into these wants which is. Not a great future. We thought we'd get. Everything
ready to go. And that's why I feel it's going to be. It's a very good thing to figure. I'm just curious. Do you think I'm going to be looking for something and you just. Get to me. Yes. You get back to the office. I called the Explorer director. Saying is. This going to start with you uses some of your reports. Come up. Can you talk about. Your. Friend along with you as much as your boss. Is the story been developing so far and get away from it. To sports is that in Kansas City. Really couldn't get this up to
now we. Know that the chairman of the board is right this person brings to Google. He said story. Why couldn't you just tell you because. I think that it couldn't go depending on what you can see in the street. Just this deal that Mr. come you're much more detailed in my book because he is responsible people license and he does not go for what she does
not just the reason it's very existence is to fight the president. What can we learn in this circumstances during the Nixon administration. Well it's very existence being punished. This was the worst thing we. All know. You want this or you can take the dirt dirty. I didn't say this but I can also make up my obligations with all of the circumstances. I wouldn't think so. The conversation between the meaning you reach your conclusion and the distinction everybody should play for the first time you're convinced that
you can do something like this. Mr. Stevens you teach you 30 years. Did you know New York Times CBS this imagine company produces license. Which. I think they can take. You think what I think they can afford to make $250000 a year. Do you. What's your recommendation. You know what. What's the what's your question.
I'm just saying. That we turn to for 30 seconds and saying this is a decision that. You are. Involved in proving something. You could be prosecuted for the state. And the district. It is up to them. What do you make yourself in your thoughts. Do you have the votes on the ballot paper. This first amendment means. You get the gist of the question the key question is we got this. We can't tell you what you're looking for.
National security. Got you. We've got a lot of. Confidential constitutional. Right. Next. To It. It's very hazardous. And you're already getting all the downs the dangers of government licenses and so on that if the situation is really drastically you described it began to me girl with kind of the thing. So. This requires 30 years for almost all of us college. It felt good to be scared because we can reassure themselves that the story gets a striker that can possibly make it. Got to
check out the aspects of which they can check. Further. And I think it's got to be done with some caution. I would much. Prefer to be playing with serious flooding. With great respect within the confines of the sport which was more of a swim team which is strange to me from my perspective. Yes. Mr. Chairman I can get. This right here. This is going. For my own actions. Well this. Breaking story tonight. Would be just go. Let's break this down that's all it seems is too serious I think to play because there's a point to make free software so we're going to
try to do a service to the. Licenses and we might as well go down. There's no big mystery Mr. means that you can probably. Talk to start with key members that are still. Shirtwaists small businesses because they've given the business of sports. We talk it over and consider it so important to the future welfare of this country and to a good part of the world. But we've determined that we're going to carry. So you keep saying. This is true. This. I didn't wait because. People want to wake up to anything but
it's all good. I think you said mom said. Look I'm ready to work with you. I didn't fix all the graphics. That's what you've been saying for years. This is just what the president said. Do you think that's different. Isn't closed his attorney general. This was true. He is the attorney general not the state. I think it's date. I can tell you this is there's no way to get the you that you've been looking
at the. President. Didn't you start a sentence with And Madam President to keep changing the rules if you want to. Take general as. All of this. I think we are going to federal court. For an order to prevent this sort of thing you do you know the judge district judge in the District of Columbia is guilty of first of all to make sure we keep on voting for the course of things. You didn't say the critical.
That referred to the degree to which you know you just said I know all about it but that's the first step. Because I think it's important that we should if you choose to go. One of the stretched very good sir. And I think this is a good situation so we can convince the court quickly because we've had this much you. 30 pages of really being do you think that this was a contingency plan in place. So you got one of your best why did you take a lot of documents. So there's going to be the direction. You just
tell me what the problem is. We obviously have reason to believe that this is just an injunction to tell them that we don't really know for. A possible reason to do. Yes but that's just what's going on. It's a representation for states that I would take. You would talk to them because they could look at them. You see that you can talk to. Well I think I would have given notice.
Yes. Delighted to talk to you. Yes. The color. Mr. water is going to go towards the green earth. NBC is going to see that you're going to be discussing it. I would try to reach that goal. Do you want to this group. What do you think the book on that should the Trump dream. When you say you watch you are against it.
Well the first amendment has been prohibitions against prior in this particular situation resulting in the private and public information that's obviously opens to the States and its people precedent precedent it's been so many things and Pentagon Papers case against. Restraints that they have to carry out very very very great. And as far as we can see some documents here in the past contagions nothing are seasons and taste and the Pentagon Papers did not carry that burden. There is indeed the opportunity to test some of the assertions that Mr. Murray has made in some of these documents to test the validity of the truth procedures. For granting prior restraint. So that used to be a juvenile or do.
You think you could do that. Do you think he did. I don't know. You've got to be dropped from the newspaper newspaper television so strange a certain way to make you think workers think in chief that. Will protect the constitutional right. No I don't think so. You
keep saying it's because they know that people know that the government can force against the people who are doing this for. You. What's years. We are going to keep putting this freedom that we can't really be getting information under certain circumstances. Yes if we can reach out to you. You don't just put it all up and maybe you have to suffer consequences. I just tried to take the bait that you take with them. If you think five years
10 years. Well first of hypothetical what you do this thing we want to ready for the rest of your life. Can't blame all that you. Hope so. We used the first part of. This was something that's been in Congress. That's what you're saying is simple steps. Oh yes it does. It was the public information protected by statute. Yes that's correct. Yes. It's too much information for John Kerry
secretary of state. What I do different kinds of people start saying this would be the dynamics of this jury. Clear and Present Danger if you will. So the first thing they want to. Be about want to read this including the best of my ultimate dream we think it does mean that. The government has the right to create the public peace. There's only just one guy. I've just started to cry. There's no
right publish. So. Thank you so much. Court. Of course it's only 10 years. What do. You believe the first. Person do you think it's this going to make freedom of speech is that the. Difference you can get in the judge's judges that we're talking here
about this thing just because you can get really getting what you the. I think it's an excellent judgment to get to the day that are being trained to be published. Is that what you expected. Yes. What does this is what it's like saying I want. To make it better. Lisa was reported to have been called considering how much
you pay. For. It. These must be close to the person this. My. Experiences referable history that Mr. Stevens. We meet with the judge is a great game until we get. There. Well of course they take the ticket which was very
deep but under what great circumstances uses these examples the troops is the location is q very dangerous situations which could be certain do. It's not fun stuff like this. This is the United States or the president of the United States. Right. Didn't. Say that.
Think of our friends in the streets. They persuaded by whatever means you could you tell me that you expressed that this was the result in a different group of people with a case in Florida. Do you expect you to think do you think that's the reason we did. Something. Like that so you can get with this for it. You will make it. Maybe you have one yourself. If I miss you and I'll show
you some opportunities but expect to tell her I'm just being home schooled and all you can get a little extra. Oh I'm not sure it will judge that must be made up before you you refuse to speak to me in terms of changing anything. I didn't know nothing about it. You all practically making
the big deal for the administration. You can be interested in something. Like that. What did you. Ask them to establish to myself first. Because you had to tell me what it was in the past you have to go. So. Far this is just the way you make your journalism record stuff that is so good for your business is my business partner.
You just said this is the perfect excuse or whatever it might be to the advantage of the country to go ahead and carry out the right to come up with the. One more you could maybe I'm not terribly happy about this decision. The president some best for the State Department and the Joint Chiefs. Maybe maybe all these people are ready
