Early polling showed the proposal that would have forced the state legislature to fund public schools had broad public support, but those in favor of state question 744 could not overcome the opposition of nearly every elected state leader, including Governor Brad Henry. Despite leading the coalition against the new funding, Henry says paying for K through 12 education is still a priority. We need to fund education appropriately. We need to enact the right reforms to improve education to make sure that the dollars get to the classroom and get to our teachers where they're really needed. A statement from the yes on 744 campaigns says it's now time for the politicians, businesses and special interest groups in opposition to help resolve the funding problem in Oklahoma schools.
