Welcome to this week's edition of the rod and reel go street side. We're here along the St. Lawrence River in Washington New York and it's Memorial Day weekend. We've decided to do a show on northern pike. My guest for today's show is my old buddy movie Barkly and my son Donnie. We're going to try to show you that northerns can be caught in the spring using some methods. A lot of you might not be familiar with. We're going to be using large streamers and jigs and if they don't work just about anything we can try. So stay tuned and hopefully we can catch a big fish for you today. In just. A. Moment.
We haven't had a strike yet. I think the fish all left when they saw the camera coming. But as you can see the boats are moved out too. I thought this would be a good time to explain to you just what we're trying to do here. We're both using jigs or streamers and we're trying to put a hopping or jig like motion into the so that the streamer rides right up off the water off the bottom and then falls back down. Now this is what I'm using. This is a giant tandem streamer. And this is tied with big foreign steel forks on an 80 pound wire. And I've had really good luck with this earlier this is a new color I haven't really used this too much but I don't think the color is as important as the notion that you're in part two way. Now looky here is using a we call it a yellow creature that he makes. This is a word that you've been kill on the pike. Is that right. Yes. This looks like a six inch yellow twist or two and then you modify it and I see you run some
living rubber through it to give it the impression that it has legs or tentacles. The fish you really love that is that right. They seem to for some reason. On a pretty heavy drinker and heavier than what I normally like to use. So really how did you ever come up with the idea of using something like that. Well I really didn't but my son did he wanted to make sure one day you were going to finish this and come up with. And read here at the beach. He caught a nice seven seven and a half pound Northern on it. And ever since then with a real devastating loss it really has. I understand last year you couldn't keep him in the shop. Still can't. All right. So I'm faster than we can make them out of the dog run. Now how about the other callers. Well you make them in other colors the darker colors the purple and the black seem to work best in the fall. They do the same too. Right now the yellow is we are now the yellow is seems to be the best color for. OK. Now tell us what of the people have been catching on lately the last week within the last week we've been making nice yellow Castille jig
that. Is. You've got a whole bunch of them but they have enough on here. OK is what they look like. They've been catching like really good. This is about nine inches. OK. And it was a redhead. Now I would have thought from my experience you I fishing together that something this long wouldn't work is good in the spring. And it's not the same thing. But they had been just telling them you're catching them on the line over and actually them they're buying them. OK. So they seem to be catching this to work and I can't make these fast enough either. Well I will give them a try in a little while. The one thing that I would like to stress in this type of fishing. Is that when you're using something like this the reason it works so well is that you can give it almost any kind of action that you want. You can experiment with the action and you can make that little dance and hop and just just entice the fish or make them mad or whatever it has to do to get the strikes. And with some of the other laws you can't do that and
we really had better luck on jigs and streamers and this type of lure than anything that we've used in the past. So hopefully as the day goes on and he's like turn on we can catch a lot of fish for you. One of the things that we have found in the spring is that Pike will feed for short periods of time and as the water warms that feeding binges will last longer. Now I expect that since it is Memorial Day that these fish will be feeding for longer periods. But so far we understand that at 7:00 this morning they hit like crazy on minerals and then they just turned off. And as I said the most of all I left because nobody has had a strike in the last two hours. So I think we're about due. So let's see if we can go out there and catch them. You think they're going to change. Got to change it. To you and I are together again. It always happens. You know I always figured if you stick at anything long enough your luck has got to change. So we went out there and kept going right at. We thought he had a strike but I'll bet it was a week. And I decided well I'll keep trying different colors and keep changing but nothing seemed to
make any difference. By this time Donny was probably dreaming about his next boxing match or the next football game you could watch on TV and the birds decided to leave. Here we see some of the bank fishermen that were trying that day because there was a derby. This is one of the dupré boys and they get 18 to 20 pound bike every year. But I never saw even get a strike this day. No I'm not trying to catch a boat here. Although it probably would have given me some action. I'd like to tell you at this time a little bit about the tackle that we use to do this kind of fishing and
why this kind of fishing can be very effective in the spring. Now as you probably gathered by now the reason for our show is to show a lot of you people out there that don't have boats or big boats and still would like to catch some big fish that there can be some great fishing right along the shoreline. And right now probably the best fishing is along the shoreline. And with apparelled waders like we got and once the water warms up a bit you can just use a pair of sneakers. You can be very very effective because. You can approach the fish without scaring them as long as away quietly you don't have the weight to the bone and the sound of the motor and you can walk right along where they were they still are holding because the pike has just got to spawning about a month ago and they're still holding in these bass. The bass are probably going to be in the bass something take care in another week or so. So it isn't just a second way to fish. It can be the most effective. You also have to remember that when you throw your lure out from shore you're bringing it back to shore in a different retrieve direction than what you would do with the
boat. And sometimes this can be a lot more effective than the guy throwing to shore and bringing it back out into the middle of the lake. So these are some of the things to keep in mind and some of the reasons why this type of fishing can be deadly. Now Louis Shouldn't this be an excellent spot right here. This has always been good right here. Right. Why is this a good career between two small weeds. One last point. One down that just below you 40 yards or else I think we got each other we got one then us and I got one all right. That's actually I've had yeah. Don always does this always that is river is never never too big for Dunn he's always somebody tangled up you know something I never claimed to be an expert did I. I the only thing I ever claimed was I enjoyed the sport. Come on dad you got to be put me on there really aren't like out here or there. So I decided to walk out and find out. And boy if you want to know something that's scary. Wonder where your next step is going to go over the top of those waders or not. No I'm not
fencing. I've really got a snake out there. Probably most of you can see that. We're not waiting any longer. We've changed locations and because the fish were getting so poorly we decided to see if we can cover a little bit more water by fishing out the nose. Mike Our cameraman and Louie are in a boat right behind us and my son Donny and I are right along the shore line and one of my favorite back waters. And we have reports from my brother in law that they have been getting a few piking here today so all of a sudden their spirits have lifted and we think we're going to get into them. Now keep in mind as you watch us that this water is a lot murkier than the St. Lawrence proper because it's a muddy bottom and it's then with a lot by the wind lately and also there's a lot of carp working in here. So we've got the brighter lores so they can see him through the muddy water. Another thing to keep in mind is when you're fishing in a canoe like this. It's often helpful to have an anchor because the wind can take them really quick out of position. I have to admit that by this time I was really getting butterflies. Was it possible the pike would
hit it all today. But no. Good old buoy saves the day as we watch him get his first strike and he's on to a fish. A little bit jealous here so we pretend not to notice. This is a really small fish but it does make one good effort before it comes into the bowl. And Louis is going to show us just how to win these fish. It's very important that you. Put your hands in the right position or you can cut your fingers to ribbons. If you hold the fish right behind the gills it will usually paralyze unless they're really big. Go back and grow up or. Louise onto another one. This one you can see took right out of the weeds.
And by this time I am really starting to get envious. What's he doing different than us. I think the secret lies in the yellow creature. You don't have to smell them or we just let him go back. Any more. Oh fantastic. You made that one yellow one. How much you saw for. It's expensive right now. Is it your son will be free. You know what it's going to cost you a lot. All right. Well I have to sell for my son because he's just going to get one. I think that's the only thing that's going to help now and make sure it gets on your phone. Nobody else is down this fall. Nobody else. There's
only one on the other side. It's coming at you. Ready. What happened. Really. An. Anchor up there. Little. Short. Run in Sydney. Could you get him on that. Awesome creature. Hi. You just let me try this on now just let take and still. Keep the rod tip top. We don't want him back here into the control pool buddy. OK. That's right. Tiger
is he any good or can you tell him. It's going to stay like this. Take it easy if you can. All right. Nice. To bring him on the other side of the ball. But get your arms around. That's right. I've been here I'm riding around. Well we're going to get him on the side of the boat. That's a boy. OK. It's a small one but he's a star in any way. I keep keep reaching keep attention on it Donny. I bring him up here and I'll see if I can land him. Just a little one. Got. To. Try again. I don't want to hurt him. I don't want to hurt him. He just barely got a
point. But. He's about 23 24 inches but he's quite he's quite skinny legs and. Died. Look at that. There's quite a loon here. See that. Let's let him get back in the water before he dies. Do you always take a shower in a bath with the fish. What we say. This is where I got to get contact lenses. Danny how that feel like this. All day long. I know. The fight very hard. To know. I was finally getting interested in this case. It's so I mean really we just got so excited now I have to catch one fish that you get in a strike every six weeks. I think we're right over that and that's why yes that's always somebody right over the weeds. So I think we ought to stay here for a
while. Do you think we ought to try that other spot to run the other side. So it's false hopes. You remember that year that we got the great big northerns down around that point and I brought your little brother Scottie in here and he was barely big enough to sit. So we watched that gigantic one. Swing that will swing down there and a second that might move good spots. This water that we're fishing is actually one of my favorite all time spots and I've never shown very many people that it exist. Surprisingly it was nothing but a creek before the Seaway went in. But after they flooded the area much of the water on the other side of Route 37 became pines and marshes and it affords beautiful cover for all types of fish as we can see here. Louise and one other fish. But this time it's a large mouth bass. Most usually you jump over and over again and there are an awful lot of fun to catch.
Unfortunately it wasn't last season yet. Louise being extra careful not to injure the girls because we want this fish to live. In the fish font so well that Louis has to check his pacemaker. That's an awful spastically. There's a lot more of them in there. That are getting back in the water so we can live. With the fact I got something. VOICE. I forgot what they felt like. But I do have a fish. Don't get your pulled out of there buddy. OK. Great. Guys the way came out of that. Sure. It's a bass but he
doesn't jump and you know. Donny take this paddle and turn the canoe around OK. Now just a minute. A. Minute. Oh my goodness. I'm. Trying to give instruction. I'll tell you more than that. I don't know buddy. I don't know what it is. That's a small boy. Yes it is. It's a small northern pike. He came right out from shore and hit the orange. Maybe the fish are down here. I do think that one fish maybe that's where they are. I have a knot in the boat. I don't want to get it because they get tangled in the neck.
That fish wasn't in the mouth. From underneath. These are very very small knowing that it's right. It was fun. But that one is really more of an answer isn't it. Maybe that one is the secret. I caught him right off the shoreline. Right right over there next to the shore is where he came off. With that orange jig. This. Area that we're fishing now is is an excellent area. It's like a tail light where there used to be a stream run through. And it's almost like a river leading out of this backwater. In the past few years I haven't really caught any big fish in here. There's an awful lot of large Moss in here we don't have. The right Moorestown for large amounts. No we just pick one up on a right track
spinner but that's still pretty water. Maybe we'll get some more. There's one right there. I. Good. Don. Don is here. Is he one of those stump fish. Around. Keep real. Cooper one buddy. I think. That's why there's a lot of lives miles in here he recalls right. By golly give us some excitement there. He is a beaver house as we say. He sure is. He's in. All right Rob we'll see if we get it out. Well. As you can see if you look behind Louis the river channel gets really narrow. So we decided that we might as well head back out into the main body of water. You know we had a lot of help in doing this show my brother in law and my nephew were in the red
canoe and mark down a friend from Glens Falls who come all the way over to see if they could catch some fish too. In the old flat bottomed boat. And that left. Louise happy about something I guess he's having a good time. I knew that around this point there was another something we bet that you'll get some pretty big pike in the past. So we figured one last try in that area might really pay off. Donna. What. You just. A. Life. That. Is going to cause their nice. Danny system. Holy cow. Donna's got a fish and I backed up and. Backed up my bed. I mean that's the highlight of my day. We actually had something on a record.
How come you didn't know that. I had a problem. All right. All good. Was quite adequate. You didn't. Breed trolling or casting casting and wait for. That. Let me see. So we can show people who actually might catch a break. That was. A. Grab that. Yes. So that's what it was a crocodile a. Resident silver crocodile. Boy I saw that fish tail in this movie all over this way. Your heart stopped pounding Yeah exactly right. Gee that's a shame. You're telling 3000. You heard of it. I know. Any chance at least you got my up. That's all well. I know all of you.
You're right in line with what else is going on today. At least you got something we haven't done anything. Yes I saw was that really has a problem. Oh I saw food. I couldn't take. That job to dead it. Well now you got us over here. We're going to try. So maybe we can catch one. Anybody out there. Well that's a good spot right here. We'll try it right here. Right. Let's get one last try for the night. Then we're going to give that. Was out. There. You know one of the prettiest times to be on the water is when the sun starts to set in the sky it sprays reflect off the surface. It also happens to be one of the best times to catch fish in here. I finally got into what feels like a good fight. However this fish had burrowed into the weeds and it was really not as big as I thought. But I wanted to do here was bring the fish around to the other side of the canoe. But he
had other ideas. For some reason I chose to try to bring you around Dani's and. Keep in mind that I'm using an ultralight spinning around so the fish is going to give a big fight even though it isn't that big. Now if you haven't been in a canoe before. What I'm doing here isn't the best thing to do. Even the slightest movement can cause it to tip. But it's a little one. I'm playing more by play here and get myself excited.
Oh well that's good training for the next one. It's a break down. It's just a small one but I think. I think they're going to start hitting Mike. I think. I think they're finally going to start hitting. That's all we have to be honest this is considered a little one. But I'm happy we fished all day and this is just about my first action. Hit this orange jig and I thought I had a stroke before him too. So I think maybe finally they're going to start hitting. They will catch a couple more fish for we close a show to let him go now so he can grow up. Hopefully he will live. Barry goes. On. I feel good about that when. He also has. That one
Danny. I don't want I don't want. To. Go. Down. Well I think that's going to cause our show for this week you're looking at three pretty tired weary. I hope have fishermen and we've hit it hard since eight o'clock this morning and that's about 7 o'clock right now. We're disappointed that we didn't catch those great big monster like that I told you we were going to do today but you know that's part of fishing. The
anticipation is always greater than what you find. But again I was thinking you know. This was a pretty typical day for fishermen. We look forward to all those big fish we're going to catch but we usually don't catch too many of them. And that's what keeps us coming back. Donny do you have a good time today. No we got yelled at 20 times. I must have been in a good mood. We won't go fishing with me again. Got no choice. Boy you were instructing us for a while there you showing us all that you all creature worked at least our little. Talk on it was worth while that produced after a while. And then for a while they hit the orange Jack but really they didn't hit anything today. You think it was a cold weather. Do you think we just don't know how to fish. I think it was a change in the weather. Well I hope so. I'd like to think so anyway. But I would like to close in saying that we did have a good time. And. I think that we'll be back again next week. Welcome to this edition of Rodney real reel site. We've left our American waters and we travel across the border to fish with my old buddy Jim McGlothlin over here in Canada. We've got some real special things to show you. Today we're going to be fishing with spinnerbait for large mouth bass. So stay with us because I think we're going to have a big exciting day. At. Jimmy what have you got planned for us today.
We do a couple of tours through these stunts and the brush through here large mostly moved in here for the summer now. And. They're all finished up with their. And I think we got a good season that it was. It was a little bit late starting but. As you've seen it we've had some warm weather now for about five or six days. Is that going to help us at all. I don't. So it should. Now the big problem I've got obviously fishing in this canoe one anybody out there watching is going to run into the same thing. The wind is whipping up pretty good today. It can blow you all over I guess the best thing for me to do would be tied to the stumps and then cast same cast around thing. On any day when you're when you're running the wind you should always just tie up you know move 10 15 yards go along a little bit cast and cast the area shift position here again because even with the electorate trying to maneuver and then you spend more time banging into stumps and getting yourself untangled from weeds because you have to watch where you're casting because of you heavy in you can do both.
It is best. All right now Jim we're going to be using a spinnerbait now. A lot of people and I included in that side of you spinnerbait and I've caught a lot of fish out of him but it's never been one of my favorite lures. I guess I got to be a fanatic with the plastic worms because there was so much fun to fish and I caught a lot of bass on them so I'm stubborn and I think a lot of fishermen are stubborn like I am they resist changing even though they read all kinds articles about how great spinnerbait are. Tell us about the spinnerbait about the ones that you've selected for us to use today and maybe you know it can shed some light on this. Obviously dynamite lore. The one we have is just a basic single spin spinnerbait it's just a safety pin wire with a lead body on the bottom a rubber screw to a buck tail. You can put a twist or take a lot of the double twist tail from there's no end to it. Some fellows even fishing with live bait. We've got a nice small blade on a ball bearing swim so we'll hear the small blades because we're very very clear with clear water you don't need much commotion or traction the fish can see. Now we're using white in clear water
which is basically a neutral color. Jim I noticed one thing I don't like heavy lightning you told me for I came over here he said bring 12 14 pound test line. That's heavy and I use for anything. Yeah. What's the reason that we're doing that. Obviously the Basque Don't wait. Well you did say there was a few beggarly but most of the bats are going to go 12 14 pounds. Why are we using such heavy wind. Roger you can see around us the stumps to cover it. It's a waste of time to fish with that glass because the fish are just going down underneath the stumps the fish has got to lure in its mouth and most of these losers do have KTM hooks or nickel plated hooks on them. They won't rust out. OK. And that's it for the fish and your liver. All right. Now another thing is you folks watch this and you see us catching fish you might notice of course the men. It's not that we're great fans of horse in the men it's just if you don't take the advantage with them. And start right in they're going to go right under the stumps and you're going to lose. Isn't that right. You've got to just meet them the whole way. So if you see us doing that that's the reason it's the only way we're going to catch them. I'd like to tell the folks for we go any
further. This has been kind of a funny start to this day. I got over here. I got so excited because as Jim was telling me fish story after fish story are not fun but I know you and so I know that when he tells a fish story is usually true but I got halfway across and it just dawned on me you don't have a license and this was last night about midnight and I'm thinking how are we going to go fishing in the morning with ice and snow. You can't do it. So I came out here and sat next to no dead tired and watched him pull bass after bass. So see I've already had my lesson so I'm trying to go now and I'm going to try to keep up with you. I don't think I will because I hear a lot of stories about what a good fisherman you are. Most of them come from you. You we'll see what happens as the day goes on our day. I should say Jim's day began at daybreak. I had to content myself with paddling around watching fish. Things started fairly slowly even though this is usually the best time to catch bass. Jim trying to figure out how to use. He finally decided to stick with.
The. Wind is beginning to pick up here about six o'clock. Jim K'NEX. Because. Fish didn't fight too much I think he was still asleep. You. Notice these fish very richly colored probably thick vegetation. They live in. This basons about 14 inches long. Actually the vegetation is so thick that almost any other lure but spinnerbait would get caught up. In. The back of the squad. Jim was cast into the other side of this
log and I think a bass is a bass apparently chased it hit just as it came to the other side. The action was starting to pick up right now but I was still paddling around burning inside and I couldn't finish. As we watched Jim he'll show us how he works the spin of beats across the surface. See the line twitching. Something he's doing seems to excite the fish. As he shows us again. Watch the spinnerbait as it comes right here. And something seems to happen. This water is a virtual graveyard for Luers. The wind is really starting to pick up now but it seems the bass like to begin to hit with a frenzy. And I'm still waiting for the corner store to open up so I can get in on the action myself.
I. Took. In all the covers and that's been a break comes through on the Basto hit. Even the little fish spinnerbait Jim won't admit it. That's right Jim Hightower. Oh. Boy. I can hardly wait to get in on this fishing. You're. So. Beautiful. Now wait till I show you what I can do. So apropos for a large most perch Yes a large mole perch.
When should my first fish. It was a perch of all things. Now I'm so exciting. I'm setting the hook every time I cast out. In the meantime Jim continues to haul in bass after bass. We're. In a different cove right now. But the fish don't know the difference. Jim so far have you seen any pattern developing. That's an awful lot of fish. I noticed you just went up in that little bay there and about five or six Tandja. Yes I got five or six right here and these lily pads for all the ones I got were pretty small or something in the back here all these fish are in here. This is the heaviest weed growth we've seen today. And they will keep on. And the new growth is this time of the year. OK. Why are these fish we're catching Now what about 14 inches we're just say 10 12 14 feet. How old is this water. Of three years I think.
OK. Now one of the things that I wanted to stress to people was going fishing spinnerbait it's like we are. Is there any magic touch or anything special that they should do. Why are we catching fish what are we doing that might trigger them or is it spinnerbait just something that you can just reel in and it does it all itself. You really can't say that about any. But even in the same breath you can say it about the Lord because people do exactly that and they do catch fish with it. There's a lot to learn but it's probably the most versatile lure there is with the exception of the jig. But then again it would because it's so versatile you can do so many things with it a person who doesn't use a lot. So what they do it's include university. They can't go wrong. You can't go wrong. Now we're fishing. Approximately what would you say to three feet of water. Oh the majority of them. And so we're kind of just buzzing it almost under the surface that way at times it's gurgling on the surface. Anything else special that you're doing that. No. OK. Now I notice that you use a bait casting alphabet and
I use a spinning fan. Really you have a lot more control with the bait caster mean this type of fishing gear can cast better you have a better feel just stop in Rhode Island or the spinning you can. OK now what do you think now we're going to go through this little bay here continue down through this fresh vegetation OK this vegetation just come up within the last few days has that last week to 10 days you know. OK. Well you you do your pinpoint fishing with that trolling motor. It really helps doesn't it. You can't beat it. I'm amazed you're talking and what I'm doing out there I'm saying it's. It really accounts for fish there's no doubt about it because you can get just that casting range you want. You can keep the boat stationary as I'm blowing around here cos I could put a trolling motor on here very easily. You have the same you know comes. From let's see if we can catch some more. Let's see if we can get some bigger fish. What do you think we're not getting any big ones that are out in deeper water. Was. That something to do with the weather. Five days of weather exactly to see one of those thousand that's of fishing is that all of a sudden boom goes follows through. So it's a cold front so to
speak. Into this cloud cover coming back over here I'll get us some fish. Maybe it's the color of your jacket. You never know. They usually insult me about my hair and I'm a jackass. Well we're going to get to that later. Feels like a. Fairly decent fish but he. Gets a nice fish. Nice one. Jimmy. Yeah. That was a nice fish. Yeah. I think that big bass that I just. Went back and told the rest of the fish that hey this game's easy. It wasn't long before all the bass in the lake wanted in on the action. It's really fortunate for me because this was the first day that I had actually spinnerbait seriously. These fish were helping me build my confidence. It's funny how some bands can just come in and they hardly do any fighting and others jump all
the time all the way into the canoe. Even when I was there. When I land large mouth Banus it's often easier to just grab them by the lower lip than try to use a net net way they don't get damaged you. Watch how Jim works. You'll notice that while Jim's fishing I'm busy paddling back because wind is taking me on a position here again it shows how important a trolling motor is. Tim you know the funny thing. Is we we fish this and. We came right through there we didn't have hardly any strikes except the head that big when we came back here together. I fished and fished it and then
all of a sudden bam five or six in a row. Can you explain it right in the same exact spot where we've been casting fish. Very temperamental. Sometimes we just have to sit on top of the mike. Earlier today we went through the big stuff in the back there. He went through and didn't get anything and then when he started tying up the bits of stump and rooting around taking our time. We started to get more fish. I wonder. If it's a fact that the fish you just pound them enough till they get mad and hit or if they move the ball and something stimulates him. Of course we probably never know. At this time of year that death that definitely been a move that they would move along. There's not much cover for the. Youth. Now you fish for everything. Your great musky fishermen and you like walleyes and everything else but what is there about fishing basket that you think attracts your other people like.
I'm a great fan of shallow water bass fishing. And I think it's just the excitement the element of the unknown. You know to me it's it's almost like fly fishing in that the strike has so much more meaning. This because you're watching you more and they hit it more suddenly large Miles whether it be the spinnerbait or the warm or anything. It's kind of an artful type of fishing and I think that's why so many of the people in the country rate the large mouth the number one fish even though it perhaps doesn't fight as good as some of the other fish. What's the overall picture of fishing that appeals to people. Oh definitely and they're not. There's always a few to be had like you know considering all things today I'm calling calling this a bad day. But we've probably cut to two dozen three dozen at least you know 35 40 fish you know and could have a lot more. But we still have we still probably will and one cloud may move or the wind may shift and something and
they could just go into a frenzy which say they've done in a little frenzy but they haven't turned down from more in a couple minutes. No but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I love this. You know each year I forget just how much fun bass fishing is until you get back at it and then you say well geez I don't know. It's hard to tell your way. Oh it's great. Jimmy felt that those big fish that have been eluding us might be along this rocky shoreline because the water was quite a bit deeper here. And sure enough it wasn't long before he hooked a pretty good sized bass. It appeared that it didn't make much difference where we fish to this lake bass were still every place. These. Fish you're pretty. So richly colored. Well we fished this area fairly heavily. We've had excellent luck we probably
caught 35 bass no really large ones although we have had one about four and a half pounds and Jim's got a couple that are two and a half or three pounds. We've decided with this wind blowing like it isn't it is really strong you can't really tell because the lake is so small but it has this control over that we're going to try the other end of the lake where we'll be able to get into some secluded bays and Jim Fields or perhaps the bigger fish are up there. So we're going to take a break go in and get something to eat. We all need right now and then get right back out on the water on the other end for you get some bigger fish. When we got to the other end of the lake we didn't find the sheltered water that we had hoped for. In fact the winds seemed to be blowing harder than ever. It was awful difficult for me to hold my canoe in position. However Jim was able to catch a couple fish. It didn't take us long however to realize that there weren't the number of fish here to do. And then at
the other end. Up to no. So. He says surgical tubing rather than heavy dark river stuff for putting a trailer on with OK. On the clear stuff here doesn't catch on the money. That's what you use for your trailer. Just surgical tubing. Clear through the that you just cut it off in a little half inch length. Yeah. So that's OK. But in past we used to use rubber surgical too huh. I just found that it tends to stick to I was knocked out of place it stays in place because there's sort of a roughness on the rubber where the plastic just swings back straight. No for you folks that don't know what we're talking about. There may be a lot of you because this is kind of specialized here a trailer hook is something that you put on the end of the floor in case the fish are striking short so that. So you have a better chance of hooking up. And this is what Jim is saying is the best way he's found to put the trailer hook on is where the surgical
tubing. It's a good point. It's something a lot of us I'm sure didn't know. I have been using a trailer hook today. I haven't caught as many fish as you have but you know the one thing that I've noticed with our fishing today and boy it is hit me just like a hammer over the head. I think all these years all the fishing that I've done and I've been missing the boat and that's the boat control that you've been getting with that electric motor. The fact that you're able to hold that boat in place like you have been it's just it's impressed me to no end because I've been fishing a long time and I've never seen anything like it. And I'd like to tell everybody out there that is contemplating getting a trolling motor. It's an incredible thing. You don't have to troll with it. It just let choose fish where you want to fish. I don't think I've ever told you that. I'm not a troll either and I think maybe that's the reason that I've avoided getting on the ball. I'm not going to avoid it anymore. The other thing that has struck me today is that you spinnerbait is a whole lot of fun. We've caught so many fish since we've got over in this other spot I guess we didn't hit the fish like we thought we would. But again that's
that's part of fishing that's what makes it fun and that means I'll fight it. But if we caught fish every place you went it's going to get boring. And what do you think we should do with the rest of the time that we've got. I think we should keep pounding this water back out spot back where we first know creek channel. Yeah that was a nice area. We get into a lot of fish there. Maybe perhaps we can even get back in my little pet be the one. That took most of the fish earlier in the morning. Made do well and now. What have you had you do with him. I thought that was the fish going through there I saw that back there but I didn't say anything. Just something else to catch a lot of fish out on a day like this is it is if you don't fish in dead water like he cast a bait pretty close to the shore and see you're 40 feet up. I'm sure you can be sure and you retreated back and you only retreated about five or 10 feet and just throwing it back in the boat because that 25 or 30 feet from you to the shore the shoreline zone is just that water unless there's some heavy cover along the bottom
has one place really we along the rocks there that was obviously covered. Right. And so you fished the edge and then you dropped down and brought it back along the way we're getting strakes coming back. That was when I got the fishing gear. Yeah I was that was. That was amazing. That shows how hard you said to. Holler back at the spot that we just talked about coming back to where we got in all the fish that we are. And the wind was just blowing so hard here that we just figured. Maybe we could do a better job if we took some time in the show right now. And show you just what a spinner bait tackle box should look like in the very specifics of spinnerbait and the different types that we have. So we've laid Jimmy's box out here and he's going to tell us more about the different types of spinnerbait and how he fishes them and which one is best for. Which type of water. So Jimmy what can you tell us about what you got here. Well basically Don we've got two types of innovators tend to model. With his he has two blades on it. We have a single spinless we used most
two of them in the morning just one half of the trailer which we talked about earlier. Two-Bits. Both. Commonly used people make mistakes with them quite often they don't use them in areas that they should be using them and they. Take it in and they get into heavy cover. There's one thing that a double blade does do when you get into heavy covers it picks up a lot more junk. It does still pick up more but that extra blade and the cleverest for a single spin won't do it it'll just slide right down and off of one of the blade to hold the two blades to get stuck between just seems to be something about a single spin around cover. That. A double spin doesn't have. OK. Now let's switch it around. What's good about the double. It works better in open water. Really is more vibration. Yeah. And there's another place I've found that to be effective to is if you get a sunken bed it will work very well. Over the top. But I see. Under low light conditions at time you should use a double spend most of the time. OK.
Let's deviate just a second here since you got the two colors. When would you use a white one when you use chartreuse and when would you use black. Those are the primarily I'd say the most popular colored blades are thick. Skirts. I use Chartreuse. Basically I was fishing in dirty or murky water like in here. I wouldn't dream of putting it in water. OK. It's not that it can't catch fish but the White or black will take more fish and also the plane blades. You know it's just played it's a little bit bigger. We ran out of the smaller ones on a few snags and bite offs. Normally in the water the smaller blades are better and in the water the bigger blades and also the colored blades can a little bit more of an attraction to be fully funded from the point of view. OK. Now another question I have and I'm sure a lot of people might is the skirts on the floor as you like a big full skirted spinnerbait. Now they come in different materials. Living rubber and the old. Plasticky stuff whatever that was. And now mocktail They're also made Imbruglia. This is the other.
What do you think. Does it make any difference or is one as good as the other is just a matter of who's fish with it. Well it definitely is something with the living Rover spinnerbait in the water. The polls say it just appears to be alive in the water. And they also last a lot longer than the plane was because there's a lot more to tell shore off because it does take it too long. Now another question that I have is as we spoke earlier that some people like to add things to their spinach base to make a more meaty looking or more appealing to the fish. Now there's a number of different trailers what would you. Can you show us some of the trailers that might be used. Well generally a lot of people want to use is use a double tailed twister to the nature of that on the back of the jig. To use that type of thing. Or a plain twisted tail which is just a single tail. I like to use my Sofala to use a lizard. Blasphemous relights like this is just right on the head. You know Mr. Miller I was using it for a while. Is that what you were waiting on out there. I saw you.
Know he just took two off the head because it fits better against it. And I'll just allow the lizard trail off the back of it. OK. And a little something to it also get a little bit more weight. OK. You can also use a creature like you're feeding into something like that very hard plastic. So that's good for for a trailer because it doesn't tear up too easily. But you know basically that you can put a six inch possible backward if you want. To. It depends how big of a basket. OK. Now finally a lot of people might wonder what type a rod is best to use with this. Now obviously you can't go out there with an ultralight because these are fairly big lures and they create a lot of resistance in the water. Show us the rod that you use if you want an error or describe the type of action that the best. For these type of lures. This is sort of my favorite rides I've seen so far and it's doing this having a powerful axe. It doesn't say a medium. Well as you can see the rot is very very stiff and it's messy for the cover you're fishing. It gives you the power to pull the
fish out the first five six feet because the rod doesn't bend the fish gives you. So it really helps a lot. And also you need to be tested really you can't get the same power the accuracy of a lot of times when you're fishing out here you have to drop the load directly onto the spot and start to retreat right away. You cannot do it with this thing. That's true guys. And they say all we can do is we can do it. You can't do it in a hospital I don't care who you are. You might get one out of five. They will do it. But for one of the five you're getting to 80 percent of your fish. I noticed that today every time I cast along the shore there would be that split second of slack where I try to pull it with my finger before. But if you get a strike then you're you're out of luck. But you need a powerful rod too especially a lot of times here with a really clear water. We try to get in. As close as close to the cover you want to fish but you do have to stay about 30 or 40 feet. It's just nice to have something as powerful. It also has a little bit of length so it helps the casting is five and a half foot. It's graphite and the director I'd be guessing. Was the new magnetic ones
up now. You know a lot. To help people get started. It isn't easy to learn especially on a windy day like today you know the wind for Jimmy I want to thank you for being our guest today on the real strange side you're probably one of the finest fishermen that we've had on the show for well ever have on the show. You showed us a lot of what has made you a good fisherman and especially using spinnerbait. It's something that I've always wanted to know more about. And I know a lot of people out there are taking it for granted. We caught a lot of bass. We didn't really get any big ones but. Geez we had a good time. But. It. Didn't get to small. It's. A long time. For catching. Fish because it was always coming. You want. That's true. And the fact that there are so many of your class indicates that the fishing is going to be good for a long time to come. I want to thank you all for watching this week. I don't know where I'll be next week somebody like Jim is probably going to call and say hey you better get over here. The fish are really heading. And if they do it well that's where it will be so until next week.
