Description
Episode Description
In the final program of ?A Downeast Smile-In,? Marshall Dodge goes inland for stories about rural Maine. Viewers will enjoy an automobile graveyard at LeGrange, full of rusting fivvers and other cars of the 1920s and 1930s. Here Dodge tells a few one-liners about travelers in Maine, i.e. ?How do you get to Portland?? .... ?You can?t get there from here.? At Swans Island once again, a visit is paid to the farm of Clyde Torrey where Dodge tells viewers about Albert Tyler?s moose and Charlie?s double bed. An added attraction is the background singing of 71-year-old Torrey, and the appearance of his ?hoss,? Sandy. About five miles from the filming site of the movie, ?Peyton Place,? Dodge calls in at the farm of Walter Howe on Howe Hill in Lincolnville. Viewers are given a cinema-verite tour of the farmhouse, which is used to illustrate a story called ?Frost, Ya Say?? In a field outside the small Maine community of Passadumkeag, Dodge works on the construction of a privy seat while telling the story about Mr. Perkins? privy. With the Union Fair as backdrop, Dodge takes a character named Foster Fickett through one day?s trials and tribulations. As Foster expresses it, ?My day?s been one long fizzle from beginning to end.? Series Description
Heard the one about Mr. Perkins privy, Ed Grants flying stove, or the unusual funeral of Aunt Mehitable? These and other tall tales of Maine are part of A Downeast Smile-In with story teller Marshall Dodge. Filmed in rugged Maine, A Downeast Smile-In brings to public television the unique character and humor of the downeast Yankee, humor which has made Marshall Dodge famous with collectors of interesting records through his albums of Bert and I stories. In three colorful half hours, Dodge uses Maines rocky coast as a backdrop for stories of sailing ships, lobstermen, and the funeral of poor Aunt Mehitable, who turned out to be ad admiral in full dress uniform. During the second program, Maines timberland and lake country is the setting for tales taller than the pines themselves. Take Ed Grants stove. Whey it had such a draft that it raised the old cabin right off its foundation! Finally, A Downeast Smile-In turns to the farm humor and the complexities of constructing Mr. Perkins privy. was that a one holer or a two holer, Mr. Perkins? Hey Jed, said one lobsterman to another. Wasnt that you I heard talking to yourself just now? Yep, it sure was. I enjoy talking to an intelligent man and I enjoy hearing an intelligent man speak. Its humor with a poke, not a punch, youll find on A Downeast Smile-In with Marshall Dodge. A Downeast Smile-In was produced by Maine ETV Network under a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The 3 half-hour episodes that comprise this series were originally recorded on videotape. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
