The upper Cumberland camera will not be seen tonight so that we may bring you the following special presentation right now. You're a beauty. You all go. You got to go pick it. It was a beautiful hot two days for golf this past weekend at the Cookeville country club.
One hundred and forty teams gathered to compete in the seventh annual Golden Eagles scramble. It will also be a weekend at least three villains will never forget. Bill Pugh on his very first stroke of the day managed to get a hole in one on the 10th to win a brand new car and the team of J.B. written Barry and Steve fly flowers. Charlotte 23 under for the scramble to set a new scramble record and to win their fourth golden eagles scrambled title. The. Two men scramble is a select shot. Tournament. Both players tee off
below. Both players hit their second shot and both players cut if necessary. For many golfers two men scramble is more fun than an individual top tournament. There's a couple of reasons for this. Number one I feel that there's less pressure on the players. Number two if you hit a bad shot if your partner hits a bad shot you always have the other player to rely on to me and scramble may consist of to me or it may consist of two women or maybe a man and a woman at the Golden Eagle scramble the man play from the blue tees and the winning play from the Red Tails. The scramble seems to be a very popular term in this part of the country more so than individual tournaments. Most of the excitement on Saturday occurred around 11:00 a.m. when Cook Villiam Bill Pue
on his first stroke of the day did what some consider impossible. He shot a hole in one on the 10th. Joe Huffines of 94 Radio and a golfer himself interviewed him about his feet. Bill what was the excitement that you exhilarated when you saw that ball go in the cup. Well Drew as I talked to you yesterday when a person plays a par three I think and especially him he has not in a car. When he got up on the team you really don't think about putting the ball in the hole. And I hate to say it was just really fortunate for him to hit on the rain one time and Roland. OK. And that has to be one of the big thrills I would say in your life. Golf wise wouldn't it. Oh it's certainly the biggest thrill I've ever had. This is the first one I've ever had. And to come at a time when there was a prize like a car but to be shooting if that's that's quite a thrill. How long we've been playing golf ball. I started playing about 25 years ago when I was just a kid. We used to play of
course in Tangier in Crossfield before modern or the only place is to play down to the country club like yours. Hey do you play a lot of golf here at the Country Club. My partner and Robbie Anderson we used to try to play every tournament they sell out here we play in the roadies Rotary Club tournament the course the go on the wall and any other tournaments are held here that are open to the public. We come play. You were telling me yesterday not only was there excitement from you and your partner but everybody around Number 10 and number 20 and green were jumping with joy. We are playing partners we're all nickels and Tommy. They were playing partners yesterday and Mr. Nichols seemed to be as excited as I was on basically that basically went into shock as soon as the ball went in the hole and my playing partners all celebrated for me. But you tell me I believe like something I had an $11000 prize I believe the sticker price on it was around eleven thousand five hundred. OK. Now you had to play 18 holes after this your first shot of the
day. Did he get to you for a few holes. Oh the first nine. My partner had to carry me out. I didn't help him a bit after the first hole on the back nine. I settled down a little bit but for the next eight holes after the first shot I wasn't worth anything. How well did you play though for the 18 as you and your partner. We caught one or two under our first hole and finished up but with the sixty seven which is three under for the day. Some of the excitement's from members of your family when you got to see them. I'm going to have quite a phone bill this month. We my wife was on the phone just about all night and has been on the phone all morning and yes there's a lot of excitement. And then as you know one of your one of your rivals Gene Davidson is my father in law of BHB and we went down to his house last night. He was he was getting there. He was kidding me about it. He doesn't have a hole in one though for a new car does he. Well he sure doesn't. He doesn't
even play golf but I think now he's considering taking the game up. I would think the entire family is bailed. Congratulations to you on creating one of the most exciting moments of this golden eagles scramble this year. Have you ever seen a hole in one before. I have played with a guy who hit a hole in one but the green was such that you couldn't see that the ball rolled into the hole. This was actually the first one I've ever seen. How are you going to do today. I'm going to try our best. One of the traditions of the Saturday scramble is the barbecue prepared by Tony Stone and his crew. We talk to him about how the Saturday night feast had grown over the years. The first goal we had was that on when and how many people did you feed that time. I think we had about 300. How many do you plan to see today. We assume there will be around 500 people. It looks like each year you have more of your grills here though so they are eating more or they're eating more and the crowds are getting bigger every year we were cooking a little bit more than we did last year and we
figured for five hundred last year. I understand. And I may be wrong on this but you originally designed this kind of smokers or started them in Cookeville anyway. I started. I had a friend of mine had one from Texas border and I saw his and we modified a little bit and started making them and we've gone from the all round model we head into a more square type model now. What time do you have to start to cook a meal for people that are going to serve at about six six or six thirty we started about 12 and you just put this charcoal in the end of them and start them up. Yes the charcoal was just in the ends of the grill. It's not under the meat. And now we bowl all of our meat first and then if we bowl that we put on the grill and then we put the seasoning salt on it and we are based in oh five or six times and then we'll put a final tomato sauce on about 30 45 minutes before we serve. OK now this is the third or fourth year that we have personally interviewed you about your secret sauce. We still do not know what is in the secret sauce.
Well I keep you know I keep telling the same old thing if I told everybody that it wouldn't be a secret we were use that lox seasoning salt and then we have a tomato sauce that we also make that that we put on. How much do you have to make up. We made three gallons of sauce and about a gallon of seasoning something and everyone seems to really enjoy eating them. Yeah I'm having trouble keeping everybody out of everybody's morning samples and so forth and I've got to keep them out. So we'll have enough for tonight. Is this the biggest event that you do during the year or do you do others. This is the biggest one I'd do several cookouts for 250 to 300 people but this is the largest one. Do you enjoy cooking. Oh yes very much so. I do a lot of cooking at home and I've been doing this catering for people for about five years. What's the best part of that when you get through that. Now that's not really true. The hardest part is cleaning up. Of course the best part is everybody enjoying themselves and having a good meal and enjoying the food. Well we thank you very
much. Well we're of course have a lot of guys helping me today and we certainly appreciate chance to help us with the chance to win the wood for motors grandam gone. Golfers on Sunday concentrated on winning their respective flights. The Golden Eagles scramble had the championship flight plus eight flights we had to add a rather we had a I had two more flights to the tournament this year simply because we had a feel of 140 teams. This is one of the largest fields that the Golden Eagles scramble has ever had with 140 teams and a total of nine flights that averages out to about 15 teams per flight. When you're flying a tournament this can be one of the more complicated things or items in running a term. But what I try to do is I try to take the championship flight through the 8th Flight and try to get as close as possible to 15 teams per flight. Now
in some cases if there are ties you may have more than 15 fly or rather 15 teams are in some cases you may have less than 15 teams. This particular year I think the championship flight only had 12 teams whereas I think a couple of the other flights had as many as 18 or 19 teams. And this was simply because of the ties in the tournament at the end. Now we always fly at the end of 18 holes Saturday evening that's one of the first things we do when all the scores are turning and we fly all the teams. One of the things that we try to do in flying is that we try to make sure that each team or each player in that flight has a chance to catch the leader. Therefore you don't want to fly that the leader is just too far ahead of the person who is in last place or at the bottom of that fly. The Golden Eagles scramble is held each year as a benefit. The Tennessee Tech spring sports
programs coaches from other teams were there to either help out with logistics or to play in the tournament. We talked to two of them. Coach Brown you may not be the oldest man playing in this tournament but you're probably the oldest one that still walks the course. I walk all the time. I enjoy it. Do you think gives you a better golf game to watch. Well it makes me play by play better want to walk than when I arrived. Yes I'll walk today. I'm going. I'm with Doug broom and Doug will I put my bag on the cart but I'll walk. I understand you play golf quite a bit do you think that that helps keep you young. Right. I don't get me wrong but it sure helps me helps me as my feeling young is concerned. This is of course to benefit the Tennessee Tech athletic department of course we know you had a lot to do with the athletic department both as an athlete and as a coach over the years. Do you like to see activities like this Oh I'm Tennessee Tech as part of my life and anything helps the take.
I'm all for of course I understand that this goes to help some of the scholarships for some of the spring sports scholarships helpful in your day. Did you have any scholarships. In my day I worked in a restaurant. For my scholarship. I'll have to have a job but I may pay my way through school. Now you play baseball football. You play for sports right. Yes I did play football basketball baseball and track. But no golf back then. Well we didn't have golf then. I would have enjoyed it. I wish I could have started back when I was young. When did you start playing golf. Well I didn't start playing golf until forty nine. I started playing golf in. But I've been playing it pretty regularly ever since. Yes I fell in love with it and I played quite a bit. I think the last time we interviewed you coach Cohen was with you and he said it wasn't hard for you old baseball players all you did was change his swing a bit. Well Coach school and I played this for several years as partners. But
Cosequin had been in Florida this year and I'm playing with my room. And I enjoy playing both while I enjoy playing golf period. Do you think that he was right about the swing. Well naturally a baseball player has to make some adjustments. Yes and I understand that you played in the Golden Eagles scramble this weekend down if you want to go play. But we did play for two days and enjoyed it very much. My father and I were the team we finish this morning and needless to say the go to may go live is always is a beautiful tournament and a very well organized and I think that this year the probably the golfers even Jordan even more and I understand you know that it's good to see you fall support guys out supporting a spring sport guy. Well of course at Tennessee Tech we all try to support each other and the origination of the Golden Eagle was to support spring sports and especially golf because they didn't have any scholarships at that time. When we first started and then since then I think if I'm not mistaken I believe those three fall are four full scholarships given to the young man.
When I talked to Coach Brown and of course he played a lot of baseball I don't know about your baseball. Are you a good quarterback but how do you get that swing down for golf. You're really asking someone who they didn't know at first time I ever played golf in my life. I thought I was swinging at a baseball and ever since then I think that's my swing. But I think you'd have to go to the experts to answer that question and that's probably not even a better expert than Raymond bhool Brown at approximately 1:30 p.m. the winners of the championship flight began to tee off for their final 18 holes of golf and a chance at the championship. On the team. Biliteral Anderson his partner David Tucker just hit. Next on the first tee is from Cookeville Martin Fouche. Martin got over the top of that one just a little bit and topped it is pardner's Johnny Anderson. Pretty good shot
down the middle. Next theme is male and Derek Hunter. OK. Pretty good shot. Next on the T is Hayes Lee and Roger easily. This is Jack Henry a former Tennessee Tech golfer. And his playing partner from Nashville David Burnett. Good shot. The 1985 champions Gary Frank long. And J.B. dire. Gary's pretty straight straight down the middle
has a little short flat swing and here's J.B. diary's a long hitter looks like a pretty good shot. Next from Cooke the all. Is the team of Kim McMillan and Clark Childress. Kim and Clark both are former tech golfers. Also two former golfers are Mark Norman and Gary Maxwell. Good shot there Mark. Got a good smooth swing. Gary Maxwell from Livingston is a long striker of the ball. And. Good tee shot straight down the middle. Next the number one team is Dr. David Draper.
And his playing partner chip Carlen. This is Tim Long from gangs Berl and another former tech golfer like Limberham. We have here Sam Coral's and by the way Sam is. As a. Former. Country club caddy and with his partner Bob Randolph Bob Randolph won the long driving contest this week. This is J.H. Graham. Along with his partner Dennis males. And this is Bobby Williams. And Bill laig from Cookeville the Cookeville team of J.B. written Barry and Steve live flowers had shot a 10 under par on Saturday and were determined to win although some of the other teams like G.H. Graham and Dennis mills of Crossville and Sam Coral's and Bob Randolph of Cookeville were determined to give the champions a run for their money. But written Berrian flowers who had won the championship for three years straight at Ironwood. But
not at the Cookeville country club course. We're not to be denied as they played their final round on Sunday. J.B. And flyer on the Sixto they had about a. 25 or 30 Ford are there. The thing I feel that Jay being fly had going for them is the fact that both of them are good putters J.B. hits the ball extremely straight he keeps it in play and flies a very long hitter so maybe he can put the ball in play and then flash can go ahead and let out only. This is a second shot flange be second shot to number eight. Excellent shot. It looked like you had about a hundred and forty yards to the green.
The. Whole number nine looks like fly let out on that one pretty good. I believe that scared to death you know. And sure has good teashop. Glided in there about seven or eight feet. J.B. can't afford. For a birdie. This is whole number 10. Fly left a little bit short. J.B. went on to hit it in there about 15 feet. However they miss their birdie putt. And had to settle for a par. Whole number 11. They've hit it in their real close. J.B. missed his part but fly had about a three or four foot and he knocked it in for a birdie this whole number two they both were hitting irons into the green. JBC pulled his a little bit to the left flying is in there about 20 25 feet. And
they. Managed to put. A whole number 13. Fly really let out one here knock it down the middle of the fairway look like he hit it about 75 to 80. They were left with just a short run into the green. Of course he's very good on the short iron shots wages that you can see he's hit it in there. Four or five feet from the hall. I guess just a little bit longer than that. Yeah I was about 12 15 footer. Hold on a 14. This is written me teeing off. There shore the great the hole is 300 yards long. So you can see J.B. is about 20 yards or so is about 280 are you shot because he's chipped it up their clothes for. Give me Birdie practically all black right. Par 5
fly. Hit it down the right side that's in the right rough but it's a little bit closer that why haven't you can end up with a with a bad lie. They missed the green on the second shot but. Flies made a good trip to the fly. It looks like he has about a three or four foot or less farther birdie. And J.B. does what he's known best and that's putting he's not even whole number 17 feels one of the best holes on the golf course is very tight driving how to ride down the middle. And here again they're left with about a seven or eight footer and he knocks it and. Use as you can tell it's getting dark. This is J.B. hitting his second shot into the 18th hole. He's left with about a 20 to 22 foot putt. Throughout the whole. Fly. Just. What happens when you make.
Sure your winners you're 1986 winners the flowers and John be all written by three. Four time winners of the Golden Eagles scramble. It was dark before the final winners were announced and some had already collected the prizes and headed for home. However those that were left were pleased to have been part of the 1986 golden eagles scramble. Ew. Ew. Ew.
Ew Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew.
Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. Next year we're trying to make it bigger and better. Thank you very much.
JP written Barry tell us about this day and what really got you started. First of all I'd like Marshall teach for you know get getting the golf course real good shape. All these conditions you know that we played under and as far as round today. My partner flower you just keep it in a vague Tayshaun far and then gonna hit it in real close 6 8 feet and you gonna walk up to but you know when we just gonna. Keep going together. What about you know we shot the Israelis would it was really happening today. He had really good. Luck say he said he pretty good he really did. I hated in her clothes. First one to put and he just knocking out when I would have go the next Don't get rid of all of. You. You
